The Bing Crisis. The End of True Android?

It's highly doubtful. Unless a more reputable tech site has firm evidence of this... it's just a rumor.... just like how the iPhone 4 was coming to Verizon this summer.
 
I hope that this is just a nasty rumor.
.....any chance that 2.2 might fix both the GPS and "Bing Gate"? As in replace Bing with Google on the Google Android phone?

Well... 2.2 has to be Samsung's version of 2.2 for their Touch Wiz UI. It will also have to go to Verizon for approval and whatever Verizon decides to do with it also. After that, it will be released to us.

Is Bing really all that terrible? I've never used it before... but it just seems like another search engine to me. The actual layout looks quite nice and for what I search for, it's not like I'm trying to look for something very obscure and broad.

I honestly don't think they will fix the Bing situation. Obviously Bing and MSN paid Verizon a lot of money to get Bing and only Bing on the Fascinate otherwise Google Search would have been there. Not to mention Verizon doesn't really care about phones that aren't Droids because those are their top sellers.

I will be surprised if they release an update to make Google an option for default search function.

i wonder too. I don't use Bing, but search engine wise I don't see how it could be that bad. I'm open and willing to adapt if its a good engine. If layout is the main issue w/ it than I don't care, but if its actual results/info./functionality/etc of that type that makes it bad than i can see the hate for it

Much agreed. Try using it and actually adapting to the different search engine before making any final conclusions about it. It's obviously not exactly the same as Google... or it would basically be another Google search engine.
 
I could deal with bing if it ONLY the search engine.....but I'm worried that bing's integration into the Fascinate will harm the overall experience.....voice search?, Voice navigation?, Turn by Turn?, other voice apps like text messaging?, Google calender functions?, Gmail?, Backing up contacts through G mail?.....and so on.....and so on.....

Then I have to ask.....do I want to risk losing any of this when I'm trying to UPGRADE from my crummy Eris?

It's a search engine. I don't know what that has to do with text messaging. You can still download Google Navigation Beta and that has voice turn by turn navigation.

If you don't like it, you can always return it. Try it in the store first to see if you like it or not also.

True I c an always return it....I believe that in 2.2 (froyo) that you have the ability (through GOOGLE) to use the voice search (Google) to instruct the phone to send a text message to one of your contacts all through voice commands.....I do hope that the Fascinate works out....it is a nce phone except for some things....just depends on how deep these bings go into the phone operation.
 
If that happened, Moto users would be impacted the most considering those phones are tightly locked down. Thankfully for us, there is nothing stopping us from rooting this phone.
 
I agree that's it's the Bing integration's effect on the other Google functions and capabilities in the OS etc that really concern me. Though it does irk me that Verizon and MS would prevent my ability to exercise personal choice on a device I am paying to own, principles aside using one search engine or another won't really affect me day to day.

However, if it turns out that this Bing stuff prevents me from using new and free Google features, readily available in other Android phones, then I'll be upset and consider an X or perhaps other carrier.

Only time will tell how deep the Bing integration is and if or how much it mucks up other Google functionality. One reason I ended up going with the Fascinate is thr hope that rooting will solve much of this. Granted, we shouldn't really have to just to use what we want, but a lot of people who really care about this and would even notice are likely to want to root anyways.
 
This is typical Microsoft. Anytime they want to jump into something, they throw money at it. Anyone remember the 3 year contract to Msn (the next aol) with instant 400 dollar rebate. That bought a lot of crappy E-machines at Best Buy. LOL

And then lets not forget Miscroft live search they bribed you with prizes for using it. And then Bing, it was cashback. Now its Verizon, 500 million.

Google may need to get in and change some of the terms of their OS so they can't be locked out of their own OS. I wouldn't mind if Bing was there and I could change it, but forcing me to is not cool. I thought this was what we were trying to get away from. I really despise Verizon, I hate they are the only ones that has a good signal around here.

If I want to use Bing I'll buy Windows phone 7.

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. I'm seriously pi$$ed about this whole sellout and forcing Bing/VzNav on us when Google navigation is free.

I will consider paying the ETF when the time comes on my remaining lines to get out of this CR@p Verizon is pulling.

We have no idea knowing even if rooted how deep Bing's integration goes. In order to put back all of Google's integration could require a lot of coding, and even that might not be possible, regardless of root.

The whole point of Android is the simplicity of the system, and how all programs (Search, maps, calls, email) work seamlessly together as one. This is what makes Android. You take that away, and it ends up being something its not.
 
This would be a marketing disaster for VZW. If they are that stupid, they would seem to need the same upper level leadership purge as Tmo had.

The pushback by customers has already begun at VZW stores (even the more savvy employees know it is stupid).

This is the tech equal to New Coke.
 
I can not believe Verizon would be so stupid to remove Google from Google devices. I could possibly see them as forcing Bing on their non-Droid line up of Android phones, but to put it and nothing else on all Android phones from here on out is ludicrous. And to think I thought VZW was doing pretty well about not gimping or crippling their phones.
 
No response from Google on this? I mean it is Googles OS, Google put the money and work into it, then let Microsoft step in and claim the fruit of their labors? That just doesn't seem right. Verizon better be careful, it won't take much to make them as equally hated as AT&T.

Nm, I found it. The closer to -50 the better. So my signal really sucks. No wonder you laughed. :D
