The Dam is Breaking: Onward to Walmart?!

The ūber phone is indeed heading to Walmart.

The implications are obviously huge because the vast majority of Americans shop there on a weekly basis.

whats the issue? harder for fans to buy or just meaning that more people will own one?

more people owning isnt bad thing. means faster issue updates, more accessories available, and success for pure Android :-)

Well, they did do allot for N7 sales, so why not the N4? What could be really interesting if they sold the unlocked Nexus 4 along side a display of T-Mo monthly, AT&T monthly, Straight Talk, Family Mobile, etc..... SIM cards. The ultimate in corporate conformity selling the rule breaking phone with all the tools to stay out of a contract. :D

I didn't intend for the tone of this thread to be critical of Google. On the contrary, this is very good news for nexus.

The question is what are the implications for nexus here?

The only implications I see are more people getting the Nexus 4 and not using BS contracts, thus taking the power away from the big carriers. Also more people getting Nexi means they'll become accustomed to updates right from Google, which in turn will push the OEMs to get better with updates or fear people switching to Nexus devices.

What problems? Apart from helping the evil beast that is Wallmart ;)

One potential issue could be that it puts Google off EVER selling direct again: can you imagine how many dumba** questions Google Support are going to get from the average Wallmart customer (I admit I'm making some rash assumptions about the technical ability of the average Wallmart customer)?

Also, I'd be amazed if Wallmart sell for a lower price - the Play price is already so good.

Not critical of Google at all here - Rather smart marketing move on their part. Walmart is always a target, though..... ;)

I like that the idea of unlocked phones being sold to directly to the public and having a high end phone like the N4 lead that charge is perfect. I can see more and more N4s out there if this works out as well as N7 sales did! A very good thing!

When it comes to the technical abilities of the average Walmart shopper, I assure you, there is no such thing as "underestimating" them.
