The Delay Mystery

Being that we've all been salivating over the impending Nexus release for what seems like (or what actually has been) months, it's pretty clear Verizon isn't just jerking us around over marketing issues. They knew about the timing of the release of the Bionic, they knew about the timing of the release of the Droid Razr, they knew about the timing of the release of the Rezound, and they still intended to release the Nexus last month. So there's obviously a pretty significant issue that convinced them to skip Black Friday and every uber-valuable shopping day before X-Mas since in order to ensure the issue is solved.

Not sure if it's indeed the problem with 4G/LTE or if it's a Nexus problem, but before the most recent delay I was completely willing to overlook a missing SD slot. Now, knowing there are may be some more significant problems than just form factor or a missing card slot has me concerned enough that I'm seriously wondering whether I should just hold off for The Next Big Thing. The Nexus should be a great phone, and regardless of how many ICS updates will be hitting the air next year, I would love a pure Android OS interface. But I can pretty much get that by rooting.

Just not sure if this phone and all its delays and unknowns are really worth the trouble, or if February is the next wave of new Droids that will make us all forget about the Nexus completely.

You are not the only one. I am almost at the end of my rope on quality Android products. Between horrible launches, crappy hardware, and availability, I am nearing the end of the rope to go to Apple.

I hate Apple and this is how bad the taste of Android is getting to me.

I can not imagine having a device get so close that you have it shipped to the retailers and THEN have them all recalled back. I would say someone's head is rolling down hill somewhere. This is all just hard to believe!

I know that the GNex debacle has left a bad taste in your mouth. But there are quality android products. I know because I own one. The rezound is a great phone with a solid build, great hardware, and several key features that no other phone (including the iPhone) currently have like a true HD screen and beats audio. It even comes with a pair of high-quality earbuds that retail for $100. AND the phone was launched on time and is available everywhere. Maybe the rezound isn't for you, but there are quality android products out there and from companies that keep their word.

I still plan on checking out the GNex, hence why I still come to this forum, but it will have to really, really impress me for me to switch from the rezound.

I'm sorry you feel so angry. I don't blame you. I'd probably feel the same way IF the only phone I wanted was the GNex. Regardless, if you do end up leaving for the iPhone, I hope you really enjoy it. Everyone should love the phone they own no matter who makes it.

It's due to the issues with Google Wallet. I have this from a very well placed inside source. Interestingly enough, he told me he met with the Samsung rep to go over the phone yesterday as Samsung had still thought the launch was on for today.

It;s a phone, get over it.
I'm sure it will be released one of these weeks. I rather have VErizon solve any issues before they release their 'top' phone and get burned by the media over some big issue.

I'm not sure about this "recall." One of my fraternity brothers is an Asst Store Mgr for a store in Florida and he told me yesterday that he didn't have a date, but that his store had them so it's soon to happen. I think this will be a great device to own. Perhaps not the BEST, but no device is. A new one gets released every week with "better" specs. I got my Droid Incredible because of how close it was to the Nexus One and it's still doing great, it was an awesome buy, and I'm confident the GNex will also be a great buy for longevity. Obviously longevity is defined as two years AT most lol.

I hear where you're at, but for me it's not so much an issue of Nexus or Bust (aka Apple), it's maybe I should wait on the Nexus and check out the bitchin' half-dozen phones forthcoming in the next few months. I would prefer to get the Nexus, but I was diving into the Nexus pool at about 80% instead of whole-heartedly. But now with all the delays -- not sure if I'd like to find another 'Droid pool. Like kishin said, there are plenty of other viable Droid options, and for me the possibility of getting an iPhone never hit the table. BUT...having said all that it's pretty irritating.

@Needsdecaf, I doubt it's a Google Wallet issue only because neither Verizon nor Google would sabotage a phone launch over something that could be added on after the fact. Everything we're hearing points to a 4G/network problem, which -- if true -- could really affect Verizon in a big way, whereas the delay of a handset is just a company being careful.

@AZ. I agree -- I would much rather Verizon solve the problem before the release than after. But for me, I'm not bitching about the delays, I'm just concerned that these problems shouldn't be first coming up days before the boxes roll forth via UPS. That's disconcerting -- the fact it's not available yet is completely secondary -- at least for me.

Well, you can disagree all you want but that's what Verizon is telling their employees, at least on this level. And this is a corporate person, not a store person.

I visited my local third-party VZW dealer today and he has boxes of the Nexus waiting to be sold. He told me that once it hits online they'll be legally permitted to sell it, not before. If Google Wallet was genuinely the cause of the problem/delay they would not have shipped w/o Google's approval and/or they would have yanked the boxes. More likely the problem is the 4G outage -- like my guy told me and like we've been reading the last few days.

Put another way, it's not a phone-related issue, it's a network problem that they don't want marring the launch of their product.

Put yet another way, unless there was some huge development over the past seven or so days with respect to Google Wallet, no way Google Wallet would have affected the launch for any of Google, Samsung or VZW.

But YMMV.

This delay is text book greed! There are no issues with the phone, or vzw's LTE service, the only problem is VZW Big Greedy Ego! Mark my words....this will be the last Nexus to release under the current vzw's CEO reign, so those who love pure Google better enjoy this phone when it releases, because most likely there won't be another for a while.

Vzw basically took every other carrier out of the picture by grabbing the exclusive period with the Nexus here in the US. By holding out on releasing it during the Holiday Season they hurt Nexus sales here in the states...don't think for one minute that Samsung isn't pissed at this whole situation.

If at&t had the LTE Nexus available right now it would be selling like Hotcakes...However all us Android fans are instead at the mercy of Big Red at the moment if we want pure Android rolling on LTE.

Karma is a Bitch...VZW will get there's.

I don't think either company is hurting for money.

I say FU#$ them both!!!

I have a blue Startac flip in storage, I'll just break that baby out again and teach both companies a lesson.
