after searching across the web i was eventually able to root my gt540.

but here i give you a simple and effective way to root your gt540.

just download z4root here:
Free File Hosting, Online Storage &amp File Upload with FileServe 1.3.0 (1).apk

install it to your phone and choose 'temporary root or "permanent root"

the app also allows you to unroot your your phone at any time either with temporary root or permanent root

I followrd all these steps but the Z4 Root application just hangs and then shutts off automatically when I click on 'Permanent Root' option. any idea?

try a newer version of z4root. you should be able to do this by searching for "z4root.apk" on google
