The "I'm so old" thread game

My dad used to smoke a pipe while driving, sometimes he's knock the ash out of the window, refill and relight the pipe while driving.
 
I was informed by my father that if I burned up his motor powered mower that I would be buying him another. When I was little, he mowed the grass with a scythe. He was very proud of his first combustion mower. I did my trimming with a pair of scissors but I used his mower to mow some pretty bullish grass for three to five dollars.
 
I was 8 years old, pushing our lawn mower and gas can around the neighborhood, looking for tall grass. When I saw it, I'd knock on the door and offer to mow the front yard for $2, the back yard for $3. It put gas in the can but, more importantly, taught me the value of an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. Nowadays? Women just want strangers online to Venmo them grocery money. I was pumping gas at a station when some young kid (probably 17-19) walked up and asked if he could have five dollars for some chips and soda inside! What ever happened to self-respect... let alone self-reliance?
 
I had a business partner in a lawn mowing business as a kid. We worked together and had a great time. He was a couple of years older and had more lawns than I had so it made good sense to throw in with him. Besides, he taught me how to smoke a pipe. :) I had a paper route and I delivered hand bills on Thursdays. When I was in middle school, I went to work for my dad and uncle who were trim carpenters. By the time I was a junior in high school, I was pretty much an accomplished cabinet maker. Now that I think about it... I've always worked :)
 
I started with a push blade mower for a few bucks from my dad. He did not have a power mower because he was cheap ... lol

Once I got to that point in life of having your "own" things, I did get a weedeater, power mower, yard blower, etc.

As I aged I move up to a self propelled mower. It just sits there now and the weed eater prolly is gummed up from hanging in the garage for 2 years.

I pay some guys to do my yard now, 15 minutes and they are done and gone and the yard looks great.

I set my son up a lawn business when he was in middle school. I bought a commercial mower and string trimmer and spent my weekends taking him around to mow his lawns. At that time, there weren't many people having their lawns mowed. Mostly the elderly and the handicapped who needed the help were customers. The big lawn companies did apartment complexes and commons of high end developments. I took over his lawns when he went off to college.

Nowadays, there are many lawn services doing residential lawns. The customers are not the "I have to have help" clients anymore. First it was the high end properties that wanted groomed and it slowly trickled into the "I don't like mowing and I can afford someone to take care of it" market. I certainly understand the use of a lawn service. No day dedicated to sweating in the yard with equipment that has to be maintained and stored, all to obtain a sub par product that they don't want to do.
 
I like doing yardwork. At my last residence, (a triplex) I traded the yard management for a free storage spot on the property.

I cut the yard here the first year and then my health took a nose dive and it would take me 2 days to do the yard, one day to cut, (it is a big corner lot property) and one day to weedeat/trim out.

Then I got to the point where I could not do that ... sigh.

The ditches is what was really kickin my butt, I'm too old to be playin in them.
