The iPhone 4 vs Evo Mega thread

I dont really see anything special about the new IPhone. Certainly nothing worth the massive attention this phone is getting for slight upgrades of the 3gs. Apple is a good company that makes solid products, then charges a premium price to increase its ``cool'' factor. Marketing can do wonders on an uneducated population. In the age of American Idol, Apple knows a little glammour can outrun substance.

I just realized that even with all these new features, it apparently STILL does not have a flashing led to notify you of an email, text, voice mail, etc?

i think att's network is gonna get even worse after the new iphone, which will really hurt the iphone 4's potential. but... the iphone beats the 4g in a few big areas, such as thickness and battery life.

So, I watched the announcement with great interest. Here are the points that were the most significant to me.

  1. It's THIN! Very nice
  2. The iMovie video editing is very cool. Do we have a similar app for Android?
  3. Battery Life! My EVOs are on order, but this is the biggest thing that concerns me about my purchase. From what I've read, the power being sucked up while in standby mode is just ridiculous. The iPhone 4 is claiming 300 hrs of standby time. The EVO gets.. what.. like 12 hrs? (that's more of a question than a statement)

Don't flame too hard. I ordered the EVOs because it looks like a great phone with a great OS. I like Sprint and I like to save money.
Not to mention, I *loathe* the cult of Apple. But we have to give them props where props are due. If we acknowledge these things, it can only help to make our platform better.
Here's to hoping we can get something done about that battery life with a software fix... at least for standby mode. (again, I don't have the phone in hand, but based on what I've been reading and talking to owners).

About Standby mode: I was at 100% at 10pm, went to bed. 8.5 hrs later I'm at 96%.

I've done this for 3 night so far.

The iPhone will last 12.5 days on Standby? I wonder how long the EVO would last on standby (with one of the power manager apps installed)

The battery life I'm experiencing so far on my EVO is FAR superior to that of my Hero!!! I really do not understand why there is so much speak of the EVO having crappy battery life. Even before it was publicly released..? It seems like a conspiracy contrived by jilted iPhone fan boys who reviewed the EVO on tech nerd sites who shall remain nameless.. Just my 2

Most likely why LameT&T is giving the shaft to their customers by slamming their iron fist and saying NO to unlimited data for iPhone users.

AT&T starts putting the brakes on unlimited iPhone/iPad data | ZDNet

So glad I left those bastages the first time they screwed me long long ago..

Nope. AT&T trying like hell to lock people into a 2 year contract though - that to me says something.

Yeah bro...I think they really see the writing on the wall. From what I understand, if your upgrade is available from now until december, they are allowing you to use your upgrade on an iphone only. I think they are trying to get people in that new ETF contract as well as the new data tier plans. Also I think the EVO may have made ATT a little nervous also...think about it, the iphone 4 and the EVO are already neck to neck with features...they both have strengths and weaknesses....but the thing is the next iphone won't be out until next summer...HTC will probably release a slew of new phones within the next 12 months and get a serious step ahead of apple. I'm not a fanboy....I just love competition...but like i said on another thread, I think Apple got caught with their pants down this time around and HTC caught up with them quicker than they thought.

True that . Even the EVO 4G is sexier ... Video calling only on wifi .. HA what a loss ..

I was watching an iphone video call vid. Even over wifi, it was the laggiest thing I've ever seen.

It looks like a nice device (like all apple devices are), but evo>iphone

True it would be sexy... and able to withstand scratches....

but let me ask you this... how many people here have dropped thier phones??? 99.99% maybe, if not 100%??
If you drop a glass phone... what do you think you be the outcome of most phones????

sounds kind of risky to me... but I am sure apple has thought of this.. so maybe they have some extra coating on the glass for better shock resistance... but still.. cant be 100%.

Apparently the glass is made of the same material as helicopter windows. Not sure if thats true, but I would assume most people would buy a case which would protect the phone from impacts.

I have the 3Gs, and it has pretty much been my daily personal device for a while..Just got the EVO on Friday..and its night and day as far as service goes. at&t has gotten terrible! The dropped calls are enough of a reason to leave and get the EVO.

However, after watching the live broadcast of the iPhone 4, I will admit the phone looks hot...but I'm most likely staying put on Sprint with my evo. and not for nothing, its not leaps and bounds better then the current phone out right now, yes it does get a bump in the cam, and video shooting. but the OS is just outdated to me. so yes it does look like a cool phone, but I'm just loving android right now!

I didn't see it mentioned, but one of the things I have fallen in love with on my Evo (my first Android phone) is the use of widgets. It is great that I don't have to open anything to look at the weather, start up Pandora, or start my music player.

New upgraded processor, better camera, touch to focus camcorder, front facing camera, industrial design overhall, 4 times the pixels of the 3GS, 960 x 640 resolution, glass front and back which (Apple claims) is about 30 times harder than plastic and is similar in strength to sapphire crystal.

I wouldn't call this a "slight" upgrade as it's pretty major. As I said in another thread though. It still runs the same iPhone OS, and is still stuck with AT&T. I definitely think it's a pretty big upgrade though.

The a4 chip in the new iphone is worth it enough. Yea i like the iphone but i think immore of an android guy. I just would really like to see something like this take off. So say if i want to video call someone with a phone that can do it i dont have to worry if they have an evo or not. They should all work together. And i know apple's standard will prevail over the qik one. So lets get started now.

i agree with u and lol id love to pay a dev. if he or she can make it so the front cam works with skype/msn or live messenger/aim or yahoo but mostly aim and oovoo and skype as i use these 3 the most for single and confrence chat if any 1 is willing to make thats a dev. on here im willing to pay to get this started

Was the facetime API in the iOS4 SDK beta? I wasn't aware that it was since it wasn't mentioned in any developer forums I've been to. I would love to get facetime implemented on android. We all know the iPhone will sell well, which means more people to facetime with.

Also facetime will turn into a verb. Such as, "I'm going to facetime you tonight" or "Let's go facetiming"
