The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

I've compiled a few kernels in my day, but that was back when linux was basically nothing more than stone knives and bear skins.
I was just trying to compile one myself the other night via a new Windows feature. Proceeded to fail at BUILDDEB but I see vmlinux in the root of the kernel source directory

Were you compiling in a VM? And shouldn't that be vmlinuz post compile?

And you needed the ritual bag of bones and sacrificial offering for Linux Gods, to get it to boot.

Never had a problem getting machines to boot as long as I could find the right source and had all the dip switches and ISA interrupts set correctly on the peripherals. (This walk down memory lane is like remembering the last trip to the ER  ;) )

I remember having to install an entire Unix SysV O/S from a stack of about 50 floppy discs. Now *that* took some time.
We're totally spoilt with GB of storage on little flash drives nowadays.
:D

Windows bash will NOT build/compile anything as of yet, in essence a worthless lookie toy for Win10 for now. You need a real Linux OS to compile, either native or in a VM
I'm not sure what makes you two think that nothing will compile when it has all of the tools needed (either preinstalled or available from Ubuntu's repositories via apt-get)

It's too flawed and doesn't work right at this time. It's been documented & stated all over the place, XDA included. I'm not blowing smoke, it's a legitimate statement. I hear there's some serious updates coming & maybe the fix/answer is yet to be implemented. But until then, windows bash is incompatible to building at this time. No hate involved.

Right, that article (presumably this) 1. specifically mentions building Android and 2. is from April, shortly after the feature was released.
