The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

Right, that article (presumably this) 1. specifically mentions building Android and 2. is from April, shortly after the feature was released.
That as well as using any Android kitchen in bash has been useless even recently. I have Linux Mint & Win10 dualboot and tried

Were you compiling in a VM? And shouldn't that be vmlinuz post compile?

Never had a problem getting machines to boot as long as I could find the right source and had all the dip switches and ISA interrupts set correctly on the peripherals. (This walk down memory lane is like remembering the last trip to the ER  ;) )
LOL, been there, done that.

Got the emotional scars to prove it.

Personally, I've manned to compile maybe one kernel successfully... it's like a personal failing: unable to compile.

I think the code name for WSL should have been "Cool Hand Luke" because "What we've got here is failure to communicate (with the linux kernel)" ;)

Yeh, occasionally with Linux, components and drivers come in kit form, with building instructions that expect you to be knowing what you're doing, i.e. a geek. I'm not sure that could be translated into something a 5 year old could understand. :)

Yeah, the instructions tell you how to build the driver. This is an old-school method, like we had to do years (more like a decade) ago.

I'm on a tablet and going to bed because I have to work in the morning, so unfortunately I can't take the time to explain further.

There isn't a pre-built .deb or .rpm file you could use with your distro?

It came with a Wifi Dongle. It says it supports Linux Kernel 2.4 and 2.6. Unless I'm confused, I'm on 4.4.

No rush. My laptop has better reception with it then with the in-built. Just can't use it on the liunx side.

I just use my phone as a WiFi dongle when needed.. Turn on the WiFi and USB tether to PC, much easier to do with Linux than Windows anyways

don't confuse the Linux kernel numbers with the Android version numbers.
they are two entirely separate operating systems...

I would love to have a good WiFi dongle that will work with Linux, this POS laptop has a WiFi internal board that Linux does not recognize at all, I had to cribbage up a Windows driver to make it 'almost work'..... sometimes it does, lots of times it won't.... it definitely does not like el cheapo motel WiFi routers.... none of them

I have to burn up my 4g data when I am out traveling away from home.

You can get plug-in WiFi hotspot/router for pretty cheap... I use a D-Link DIR-505 on occasion to go between the hotel WiFi or RJ-45 and my devices.

As for your laptop WiFi, most of those are drop-in (well, plug-in) modules. You may be able to find a card that is more Linux-compatible to install in place of the one you have now.

Keep in mind that some of these are multi-role devices, with Bluetooth or other radios built-in as well.
