The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

Not to be too critical, the article is a lot of generalities interspersed with implications that there's money in them thar distros. The graphics are downright meaningless eye candy. Show me a prototype, a mock screen shot or anything that shows me K on a phone.

Yeah, I agree with what you're saying.

All the same, the very thought of having access to full-blown Linux and KDE on a phone is extremely attractive to me.

The closest I think we've come to official distros on android is the ubuntu thing they did for phones which never took off. I did however install full fledged ubuntu on an android a few years back. Too small for my liking though.

I remember I had installed some app that did the installation for me and also let me choose between different distros. Since I don't remember the app I'll leave this link...

Very interesting.

I have, but never actually got around to trying, an app called "Linux Deploy" on my previous phone. Now that it's essentially a toy--meaning it doesn't matter how badly I screw up the phone--maybe I'll play with that app.

Edit: just followed your link and found 'Linux Deploy" included in the article.

Much as I love KDE myself, it seems to me that it's just too resource-hungry to put on a phone.

With that said, wouldn't it be entertaining to have a full-blown *nix on your phone, something like xfce?

I'm not saying one is better than the other. "Better" is subjective anyway. My requirements of a GUI are relatively simple. I don't need loads of config options, and Unity does what I need. It's that simple really ;)

Makes sense. Whatever you're happy with, you know? :)

For me, knowing about KDE's near-infinite customization capabilities, I just can't tolerate other DEs, with their limited choices. I've tried! A lot of them, actually, but invariably went back to KDE.

Don't you love all the freedom of choice Linux gives us? I do! :D

Pffft! I like Unity, and not afraid to admit it.

Oh I also love unity. Thought the HUD was amazing and in my opinion that was quite innovative since it was first and remained the best implementation of this feature. I also liked the dash which was different from other distros. It was just a different feeling distro yet simple which I liked. Gnome ruined it though and I had to jump ship. :(

Diverting from the current topic of GUI's,
Oh, never worry about that. :) This thread is for whatever's on anyone's mind at the moment, regarding Linux.
Looks like I have some interesting reading to do! Thanks for the info.

My Xubuntu 18.04 setup :D
Arc Dark theme
Papirus icons
I changed the whisker menu icon and item highlighting.

Time for some humour. First, the classic:

So funny! I especially like the Y2K reference (brings back great memories of how busy I was preparing for the, um, big(?) event). That and the UNIX epoch bit. The bomb, too. :D

I honestly can't remember the last time I even THOUGHT about xorg.conf, let alone touched it. Years...and years, definitely.
