The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

Hey everyone. I've been trying to get my ddclient.conf file configured to use with no-ip.com. Everything seems to be going fine, but I keep having errors when I run systemctl -a status ddclient.service.
Oct 28 21:04:54 localhost.localdomain ddclient[20385]: FAILED: updating saptech.no-ip.biz: authorization failed (HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized
Oct 28 21:09:55 localhost.localdomain ddclient[20569]: WARNING: file /var/cache/ddclient/ddclient.cache, line 3: Invalid Value for keyword 'ip' = ''
Someone mention it may be a bug with ddclient. I found some other users and one person mention this is how his config file is setup for user info .
use=web, web=checkip.dyndns.com/, web-skip=
login=my.login
password=my.password
use=ip, ip=1.2.3.4
protocol=dyndns2
server=dyn.com
my.domain.name
My question is the line with use=ip, ip=1.2.3.4, should I use my real ip address or is he just using a dummy ip address. My current config file doesn't have the line at all.

Thnx.

I've never used ddclient, but I'm as sure as I can be that you'd plug in your actual IP address. So create a line in your config file just as in the example, but replace the dummy address with your real one.

However, I don't know if that's your Interwebs address, such as 24.123.456.78, or your local address, such as 192.168.1.111. Try both and see which works. :)

That seems to have worked Moody. I'll keep an eye on it for the next couple of days and see how it contiue to work out.

It is my interweb address I do not have a home network setup at this time. I'm not sure if it is static or dynamic, I'll have to check.

Thnx.

Whatever happened to all the neat-o UNIX error messages, such as the 'You don't exist. go away' when typing the wrong password, or others? is there a way to bring them back in Linux? i read there is some type of 'insults' flag you can set in /etc/sudoers but not sure how to go about it.

Add "Defaults insults" to your sudoers file

and how do i do that?
There are several ways. The most direct, and the one I use, is to simply su - to root, then vi /etc/sudoers. Your choice of editor may vary. :) Just add a line as follows:

Defaults insults

Note, however, that since we removed the annoying password prompting for sudo, you're not going to actually SEE any of the insults! :eek: (Because you're not supplying a password, hence there are no errors to trigger the insulting messages.)

i still enter my password when i login the first time, so i can still play with them at login time :)

i just turned off the UAC stuff whenever i change a setting, install apps, update things, etc. i still have to login when i start up or wake up from sleep or access a terminal in another workspace

OK, which of these two Defaults lines do i input 'insults' in? there's two of em:

Code:
Defaults	env_reset
Defaults	secure_path="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin"

Right, but since this is in the sudoers file, I believe it will only affect sudo attempts with incorrect passwords.

No, add a new line:

Code:
Defaults	insults

Vector was a non-noobified install, it came out of the box the way i liked it (you could tweak the end result during install ten million different ways). with this one, it comes out of the box with tons of bloat plus Unity. that's easy enough to ditch, but then KDE installs its own stuff, taking up 90% of the storage. i just did a lot of purging tonight and dropped it to 75%, still too large but hardly anything is left.

Perhaps you should install localpurge next.

Sudo apt-get install localpurge

After installation, it'll ask you which languages you'll want to keep, and will auto-run after every program install to keep the unwanted/unneeded languages out, saving space.

One of the other *buntu-based distros i used (Pear OS) had a similar bug with Amarok. it would play the file, but no sound. (this time it was an MP3). switching to Clementine worked fine. in that case, it was again, using a different player that fixed it. if i recall, Amarok did complain about codecs and gave the option to download/install them, which it did, but it still had no sound coming out.

I use Clementine all the time. Actually Nick, I think it was you that did recommend it to me in this thread. Amarok was just too bloated and cluttered for my uses.

If anyone is using Clementine, this is a nice addition they've recently made...Clementine Remote for Android. :thumbup:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.qspool.clementineremote

If using an Ubuntu based Linux, this currently has Clementine 1.1 in the repos. To use the Android remote app you'll have to update to 1.2, which is here.

This is getting out of hand. 12.04 has torqued me again. Got a notice from TMO that my browser is outdated. I don't happen to want the new edition of FX. I don't want Chrome, either. I got SRWare Iron loaded, and it won't run.

I still haven't figured out how to get FX ESR to install, either.
Had Mint used the audio from Skype, I would have stayed with it.

I'm tired of all the damned listings - it does HDMI, it does FB automatically, it does this, it does that.

I want to know what utilities it will run and run well without jumping through freaking hoops.

Good luck, it would seem Linux loves having some users jump through hoops for certain things. i just figured out how to eliminate some of those hoops :)

I do not know that 'TMO' is but i can help with disabling sys alerts about new updates.

What's "TMO" a bank or something else that uses high security or a certain browser feature, which not be in the older versions?

You could try spoofing the browser user agent string, to fool the website. But if the website actually does require a certain function or security feature that's not in the older browser, you may have problems.

These days many websites won't work with Internet Explorer 6.

Currently having a closer look at some of the KDE educational software, for possible uses in my work.

This one seems promising, KGeography.

Although I've spotted one error in it, It thinks Northern Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom. What would be the best way to get that fixed? - bug report?

I just installed it; it looks promising. I played around with the US map, tried out a few of the tests (oh dear...my geography is much rustier than I thought, but I knew all the state capitals!). I didn't see any errors, but I dislike how a state, once selected as an answer, isn't dimmed out or something to show you've already correctly selected it.

Yes, definitely a bug report. However, its Help | About info says to file bugs at bugs.kde.org, so that's where I'd do it; here's their page there.

But look on the bright side: window$ disappeared! :laugh:

:rofl:

But seriously, Moody, as I am getting into the IT industry, I use my laptop as my software toolkit, and as a result I must have both the ability to run Windows apps and Linux apps, natively (as that has minimal fuss compared to VM-based solutions). A dual-boot solution has provided that quite elegantly, ergo I need Windows.

Anyway, it took 2 days, on-and-off (was quite busy dealing with life's other distractions :p) getting my Win8 install back up to snuff, including one stint where I accidentally annihilated Windows' auto-maintenance scheduling ability (literally telling me the feature was corrupt/missing/not available), and having to carve the files out from one the school's computers' existing 8.1 install for transplant into my own Win8.0 install! :eek:

Yes, I was that hardcore -- I skipped the windows-reinstall routine and instead went to repair what was missing directly! :thrasher:
