Root The Nexus Root Toolkit

I hope this is the correct place to ask.

I have a brand new nexus 7 wifi which I would like to root. So I downloaded the Nexus root toolkit. Because my nexus 7 is already upgraded to 4.2.2 I downloaded adb_fastboot_files_for_4.2.2.zip and extracted its contents into the toolkit data folder overwriting what was there.

I then started up Nexus Root toolkit but after I select nexus 7 wifi and "any build" I get an error message that says
"This feature does not work with the build you have selected, etc."

Needless to say scary to a newbie.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

The problem is that the most current version isn't what you get when you download the program. It does not support the latest version of android. You have to update the version that's incorrectly offered as the current version. You have to pay for the upgrade. That is fine but this guy should just charge from the outset instead of fooling folk into believing the app is free. The charge is minimal, but you have to pay in Euros.

I think you got it from an untrustable source. This is what you should be looking at

So I unlocked and rooted my nexus using wug's tool kit. I guess I was under the impression that it installs cwm recovery but it seems I was wrong. So my question is how do I a) boot into recovery so I can make a backup? As and b) when I hold power and volume I think it boots into recovery. It shows a droid with his chest open but its got a red triangle coming out. And that's as far as I get. What am I doing wrong?

There should be an option in the toolkit to make recovery stick.

Since this is your first time getting things all setup to flash, there is a file in your /system directory which writes stock recovery over custom recovery at boot.

If you use the toolkit again, flash CWM, then choose the option to make recovery stick and it will either delete that file or modify the name of the file by adding .bak to the end of the file name (not sure because I did this step manually; see below). This keeps your recovery intact.

You could also do this manually using a root file explorer, navigating to the system directory, give the directory read/write permissions and renaming the file. It is called recovery-from-boot-p.zip

Add a .bak to the name. .bak means it is a backup file and thus will not be active until renamed properly.

Now you can reload CWM to your phone and it will stick.

Happy flashing!
