The Nexus S is disappointing

Status
Not open for further replies.
Here's why:

1) No 720p video recording

2) The front-facing camera is not supported by Qik, the largest Android video calling application.

In fact, many video calling apps available on the Android Market do not support the S's front-facing camera.

Those two reasons alone are why I'm going back to Sprint and the EPIC 4G, but these other reasons are ones that disappointed me, but I was willing to look past:

3) No 4G/HSPA+ support

4) No microSD support, or at least 32 GB or internal storage

5) No notification light

6) Weak Wi-Fi radio

If someone can show me where I can get a hack to get 720p recording similar to how one was made for the Nexus One, I may keep the S. I can live off Tango until Qik supports the S (which I will be bugging them about if I stay).

720p recording...why not wait till google sort it as they did with the nexus1.
no led...why not just check the phone..its not difficult.
32gb storage...im not being funny but do you need every bit of media you have on a phone...theres only 24hrs in a day...
4g/hspa...Im in the uk so dont care about that,HSDPA is plenty fast enough..

This was known at least a week before the phone was available. Just return the phone.

This will be fixed over time. The phone, with a brand new OS version, has been out for all of 17 days, most of which were not working days.

Live with it, wait patiently for fixes, or return the phone.

Seriously, why would you keep the phone if you're not happy with it? There are plenty of other Android phones to choose from.

Then what do I do about video calling? That's probably the most important as I actually use it quite a bit. And I believe the 720p feature for the Nexus One was a hack and not an official Google update.

Na, not for me personally. I can live with the so called shortcomings but the pluses outweight it. I love my Nexus S period!:)

I have to agree with the above posters all these things you mentioned were known by all previous to purchase. Those of us who dont utilize or need most of that purchased the phone and love it for what it is. If you needed all that stuff that the phone doesnt offer why would you not buy a different device seeing as this doent suit you?

In my opinion, if you want 720p so much, you shouldn't be relying on a phone.

The other issues are also none issues for me.

Im sure the will come out with updates for the phone to work with the apps damn if you hate it so much go back to the epic with 2.1 i mean by the time you are on your death bed then maybe you will be almost about to get gingerbread on the epic

I'm planning on getting it. In fact, I'm even planning on leaving AT&T for it.

It definitely underwhelmed me though, but the fact that it's Google's new test platform makes it still worth getting. Plus, I can look past the faults it does have:

No SD slot - I can't really afford to buy an SD card any larger than 8GB, so 16GB of storage is fine with me. I'll probably fill about 8gigs with music and leave the rest for whatever, doing some spring cleaning whenever it gets full.

No LED notification - This bothers me quite a bit actually. There are a lot of times when I don't hear my phone go off, and only catching the notification light in the corner of my eye lets me know that I missed something. Still, there's NoLED in the market, and I'm hoping the mod community will be able to turn the capacitive buttons into a notification light.

No HSPA+ - This one is a bummer, but at the same time, T-Mobile doesn't have 4G where I'm at, and probably won't for a year or so. In the mean time, 3G still gets like 3-7Mbps, which is plenty for mobile stuffs. Reduced latency is the biggest reason to worry about 4G, and HSPA+ doesn't really bring that anyways.

No Dual Core - Since Google will be tailoring all their new apps and features to the Nexus S, it doesn't really matter if it's dual core or not. It'll run everything well, and odds are, Google decided on a single core device because they have no intentions of optimizing Android for multiple cores in the near future.

I always said, "If the Galaxy S just had a flash and working GPS, I'd get it." Well the Nexus S has all of that plus the pure Google experience, so it's a win/win.

As you can see, all of your issues have been covered weeks ago...Just to add:

No 720p Recording: Just how often do you use your phone to record HD videos (that actually NEED to be HD)? It's a feature I'd really really like, but I seriously doubt I'd use it much. Besides that, I doubt it will take much longer before we get a 720p video hack/mod/update.

My EPIC is running firmware version 2.2.1 with a perfect GPS, so.... yeah.

And 4G may not be everywhere, but it's where I'm at.

I know that video calling will be better supported eventually, and I could have gotten past the lack of an SD card and notification light. But the lack of 720p was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

And also I forgot to mention the Wi-Fi fail.

so if your so happy with your fake froyo and fake 4G ( Yes fake all the supposed 4G networks out there are NOT real 4G they are at best HSDPA+, not sprints wimax , or tmobiles 4G or Verizons LTE there all just marketing ploys ) having EPIC than why start a thread on another phone, just to say you dislike it? Im happy with my Nexus S im not gonna start a thread about hating on the experia!

Actually, the ITU has decided to change the 4G requirements such that Verizon's LTE, Sprint's WiMAX, and T-Mobile's HSPA+ can be considered 4G. In all honesty, T-Mobile's is the worst of the 4G services, despite being the fastest. The key benefit of 4G is reduced latency, which HSPA+ does not do anything to improve on.

Of course that's not to say any of the other 4G services are much better.

I owned the Nexus for less than 24 hours actually. I returned it this afternoon.
How is my FroYo fake? It's a leak, yes, but very real.

And this is my answer to your "fake 4G" comment:
ITU: 4G Can Also Refer To LTE, WiMax And Advanced 3G

.

Why, because you REALLY need it? Or because it exists?

I think anyone who really NEEDS it already has a dedicated camera for that purpose. People who call lack of 720p a deal breaker need to consider the most important functions of a smart phone.

Dude the ITU just gave into the pressure from the carriers. Just because they decided to change the rules midway doesnt make it true. Like you said if the reduced latency isnt there and the speeds arent hows it 4G?

Exactly, I mean how many damn times are you gonna use that or for argument sake any of the things he's complaining about? The only thing that could really be an issue if not addressed by a software update is the wifi, although mine works well even when the bars seem low.

If I wanted just a phone, I'd buy a TracFone.

The fact that my old EVO and now my EPIC can record in 720p is the exact reason why I didn't waste money on something my phone can already do.

I would use 4G all the time, actually. I also use video chat often.

I think a lot of you are forgetting the reasons for the forums.

Help the OP or move along. Androidforums is not the place to be having a contest about why who's phone sucks more.

The awesome thing about Android is that while one phone may be perfect for one user, the same phone may not meet another user's wants or needs.

To reiterate and make it painfully clear (that is, I'm not sugar coating it), help or don't bother posting....

Ok, fine, now we now what the bad things are about the Nexus S. It doesn't have 720p, 4G, LED, dual core and trackball. For some it doesn't matter, for some it does. Point is, we are not going to agree with each other. That's not a reason to stop discussing, but I think we discussed this enough. You can read other threads, but I don't get what the point is of making a freakin' new thread to point something out that is pointed out like a hundred times.

Kelmar, thank you. You were just ahead of me.

* I'm not trying to be a jerk just asking a question?*
How do you help someone who is complaining about a phone they dont own because the phone wasnt made to his specks. If he would have just stated i tried the Nexus S and it didnt suit me so I got an epic then thats cool, but to blanket statement that the Nexus S is a disappointment when many others dont feel that way you are gonna get some criticism. I mean its on the verge of trolling. Maybe it was worded incorrectly but it seemed as an attack on the Nexus S as a failure and not as " I needed a few other things so the phone wasnt for me"

You ignore it or click the "report" button if you or any user think there is a problem. :)

Having dealt with this user in the Epic forum quite often I can assure you that he is NOT a troll and that he is just looking for help. Sure, he may have worded it a bit harshly, but you can obviously tell that he's frustrated with the Epic experience and now with the Nexus S experience. Rightfully so might I add as neither phone has met his expectations (which he is fully allowed to have).

So... to wrap it up, if you think he's "trolling" report it and we'll look into it. Alternatively, and possibly more useful, when you see these threads that get you (or any user) worked up, hit the back button and move onto another thread. :D

**Geared toward all users, not just you of course**

OK thanks for the clarity :)
