Help The OFFICIAL Google Navigation Thread

Great idea on the folder thing as well... to put a bunch of frequently traveled Directions in there and not have it all over one of the home screens! ;)

I heard a report on NPR about the how the Droid represents a serious challenge to dedicated units like the Tom-Tom and Garmin. On it the Verizon spokewoman seemed to indicate that the Droid could provide alternate routes but I have been unable to figure out how to get my Droid to do that. I would like to have the option of 'shortest distance' or 'shortest time'; also we hit a closed road on one of our trips and the Droid kept trying to navigate us back to that road - it would have been nice to be able to indicate we needed an alternate route.

Quick question :

When you choose the Destination then select navigate -> How on earth do you change it to view Nav in Street view or any other view? I can't seem to get it working? :)

So i had an enV2 till i got my Droid on friday. I liked VZ Navigator on the enV2 but love Google Maps soooo much better. The only thing im missing with VZ Navigator is the audio turn by turn directions streamed through my blue tooth earpiece. Driving in D.C. you have to be totally hands free and i just hate driving around there anyway, but it was nice to get turn by turn in my ear, now i have to look down at the screen to figure out where im going. Am i missing something??
I feel ya. I used to listen to youtube videos through my bluetooth earpiece (with another phone but same earpiece), but not anymore with Droid. Fun's over in that aspect.

What I would recommend you to try is:

  1. 1. Make sure I select the "Satellite View" form the "Layers" option, in the Nav Menu.
  2. 2. Drag the map anywhere with a finger (just a little), and you'll see a right arrow somewhere on top. Tap that arrow and it'll take you to your next move.
  3. 3. If you see a little guy icon by the lower right side (above the zooming and written directions icons), tap'im and it'll give you a real street view. If you don't see'im, that view is not available.
  4. 4. If after doing that it shows again the same guy icon with some arrows going around him, tap'im again and it'll give you the chance to view the same street with full panoramic view (or whatever it's called): you'll be able to see up, down, sides, front and back. It's pretty neat.

Hope that helps.

I get stereo Bluetooth audio from the nav, but I want to turn it way down. I was streaming a podcast, and the voice on the Nav was about 5x louder than the podcast. Painful.

Thank you Sir! :D

You can Control the two volumes separately. I was listening to Pandora and nav the other weekend and did that.

I think if you view the entire route, there's an option to view alternative routes.... gives you some info at the top top of the screen in buttons, just tap for the alternative.....

Here.... checking now.....

load up your route, click the menu key, route info. YOu have three buttons on the bottom, one is a few dashed lines, with two arrow lines leading to a "balloon", tap that one.

Viola! I did my work route from home and it gave me two alternative routes. Also, if you deviate from the normal nav, it will reroute automatically.

Thanks Syntix! Not quite as customizable as I would have liked but better than nothing.

BTW, I tested it on a route to The Mall of America which Google navigation tried to put in downtown Minneapolis....not once but twice! So very wrong. :(

Yeah, I wish you could drag the route, like google maps in a browser....

You do know that you can report the bad info, but it needs to be GM on a Computer. There is a "report a problem" link at the bottom right of GM.

ALSO: You can create your map, drag out of areas, and then save to "my maps"

I just tested this and it (the modified route) synced up almost immediately to my droid :)\

"my maps" is a layer option!

I've got a co-worker whose daughter has a non-Android phone that has GPS tracking. It was stolen from her on spring break this year. Verizon told Dad how to track it via a website (after they turned this on for him). He called the cops in the town, and gave them the address (and website so they could see for themselves). That was one surprised crook when the cops came and recovered the phone and hauled his butt to jail.

that's so freakin' awesome I can't even begin to gush how awesome that is =)

very nice tip re: changing your route on computer, saving to "my maps", and syncing...SWEET =) I think Google Navigation is appearing more and more capable...just need forums like this to tease out all the functionalities =)

Awesome, thanks for the tip! I'm going to combine this with my "Where's My Droid"...it's gonna take quite a technologically savvy thief really quick work to defeat all the security measures I put on it quickly enough to get away =)

the only downside of Where's My Droid and InstaMapper is that if someone turns off the GPS (hope no thieves are reading this), both of those apps are useless...does anyone know if Verizon can turn on the GPS on a phone, or is there an app for remotely turning on GPS?

There's a thread on this as well:

I have been reading some of these messages and am still wondering if there is sound from the htc eris while using the travel direction. Some say they get it through bluetooth and others don't what gives?
Is there turn by turn voice directions or not?

I just installed WaveSecure yesterday. Haven't been able to fully test yet, but you can remotely lock/backup/wipe the phone and it seems to be linked to your number, which is nice. Tracking is probably GPS I assume, their FAQ states:

Yes! We have added the much asked for location tracking feature. You can view your phone's location even if you do not have your phone with you. Simply login to your account and click on location!

But the coolest feature is, from the web interface, you can lock your phone and make it scream. And i mean it is LOUD. It's like a girl screaming in a horror movie at the top of her lungs. I had to pull the battery cause I tested it at work and couldn't get it to stop. Great feature!

Also, you can have it auto-lock if the SIM is changed, which is great. And if it's locked...they can't turn off the GPS (assuming you have it on)!

While Google Maps Navigation is in Beta and there is no "avoid highways" option, which I must have, is there an app i can download that is a GPS system that has route avoidance? I'd really prefer to do that rather than by a stand-alone. I love the Droid and really want to get one.

Right now I have an iphone and use AT&T Navigation, which is fine. It is unrealiable only in the sense that AT&T coverage is spotty in some areas so you lose your connection to the web and then the navigation system starts to lag way behind you on the route. But while connected, it is much like Verizon's VZ Navigation, which was made by the same mfg but actually a bit better.

Can't get VZ Navigator on Droid. Is there another GPS ap that has route avoidance features like avoid highways?

Is the Navigation supposed to shut down when I take a phone call?

What do you mean "shut down?" It won't be able to reroute you if you turn off the path since the phone can't use data and make a call at the same time. You can continue using it while on the call though since Google Nav caches the maps, voice and path.
