Help The People App is driving me crazy

I know about the issues with Facebook and I'm not happy about them but I can live with it. But is there a way to merge identical contacts? I keep trying to do it and it seems to keep going back to the way it was. I imported it all from my VZW backup assistant but there seem to be a lot of duplicates and I can't seem to get rid of them. Anyone else having this problem?

In the People app select a contact then Menu > Edit > Menu (again) > Join and then you just select the other contacts to join with this one.

If you're hooked up to a Google account for contacts, visit this page and look under the "more" button for "Find & merge duplicates." Select it.
That fixed it for me.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. It would be nice if the app could go through and try to find duplicates for you (the way some web-based e-mail will do) but this will do for now. Thanks again.

One more question. If I have my people app set to backup with Backup Assistant on a regular basis, will it keep going back to the annoying way it was before? Should I stop syncing to backup assistant now that everything is on my phone?

I have tried to go into the web site and change it but the interface is aggravating and the first time I finished cleaning it up it had apparently timed out without telling me so none of the work I did got saved.

I would personally not use Backup Assistant unless you plan on switching to a non-Android phone. All your contacts are back up by your Google/Gmail account, so I wouldn't worry. And even if you were going to another system, you can still import your contact from your Google account.

As for duplicates, I'm not familiar with Backup Assistant but I would assume the option to set the parameters of the backup exist (ie: Backup Assistant (BA) overrides the phone, Phone overrides BA, Phone and BA are in sync). I would let the phone override the BA.
