Root The PRS Complete Rooting Guide

I keep getting a driver failed notice when I plug my phone into the pc when it the bootloader menu. Its a driver for Android 1.0 that fails. Says it cant be installed. I cannot get the device to be found at all during the recovery section and I am using the memory card from my old moto droid, the 16gb one.

Ok I got it... In my opinion this maybe a better option but I have not tried it again:

Instead of letting the first update fail, let it start going then use the other command.

Also if it fails I believe you need to redo this comment before trying again:
adb push ota.zip /sdcard/update.zip

So I have to ask... is this procedure recoverable from a brick like with the blackberry, or is your phone absolutely toast?

thanks OP for the instructions, everything worked first time for me, done in 5 minutes

I had the original OTA update
Old dell box with windows 7 32bit
used a motorola droid 16gb card

Tried about 50 times and all I get is device not found when the phone is in the recovery mode, when it is loaded it finds it but not when I follow the steps.

This is exactly why people have suggested waiting for them to work things out and/or get an easy, reproducible root method working. Why is everyone so amped to remove one app from their phones? At this point that's about all you can do with this root.

say i do this. i just want to remove a couple stock apps, be able to take screenshots with drocap and maybe install a skinned widget or two. i do not plan on ever installing a custom rom, i just want root access. what happens when the OTA 2.2 update comes out? will root be removed and everything be undone? will the OTA even be able to be applied?

i had a rooted Moto Droid by the way, so rooting is not new to me.

says device not found when i try to do this step:

adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
adb push ota.zip /sdcard/update.zip

what now? reboot and start over?

Not letting me install superuser.apk? anyreason why, my city id is gone, is there a way that tells me i have root?

my phone told me i had root, i deleted city id, and i put in
adb shell
su
/system/bin/cat /system/bin/sh > /system/bin/su
/system/bin/chmod 4777 /system/bin/s

Yeah same problem here. To my knowledge, no one can install the apk just yet. There's some permission issues they still need to work out.

also tried installing comhtcNewsReaderWidget wont let me install that either, so how do i prove i have root? anything i can do now? or what? im sure i have it, it told me i did, heh
