The real end of unlimited data is coming...

Clementine_3

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've been saying it all along, when VoLTE comes unlimited grandfathered contracts go. Looks like there is a pretty good idea when that may be now. VRZ hasn't had much to say about it in a bit, 'til now.

CNET story

So yeah, sometime in 2014 it'll be time to get screwed again!

VZW is gonna end unlimited data? Let me show you my shocked face

LOL Nick .

This is the reason I am keeping unlimited. Verizon is getting people to move over to share everything, what people don't realize, is that while their data usage is X now, they aren't counting on something coming along that changes the equation. Verizon sees that VoLTE transfer, and is licking their chops at how much people's usage will go up, and how much more money they will make.

I have unlimited data and will keep it as long as I can. Does anyone know how much data is used in a 10 minute phone call? If minutes are going to be replaced by data usage, unlimited might not be too bad after all.

Oh I hear ya. In the beginning, I looked at our data usage now, and it wouldn't have cost any more for the shared. But like you said, if something changes that . . . that is not good.

We're still unlimited, but as soon as I see phones I'm happy with, I'll probably just go shared. :(

I agree that it's raise usage, but is there any information about what bit rate the VoLTE is going to use? Because depending on what that is, increase could be minimal to astronomical. Suddenly it might become a good thing to have choppy audio in a call to avoid data overages. I can see the sprint commercial now:

"Can you hear me now?" "Yes" "Then I can't talk long, I'm near my limit on my data plan" Switch to sprint for truly unlimited data

When i was using VOIP for my service to try and save money typically its could a MegaByte a minute, so to be honest it might be about 10MB for a 5minute phone call...

Ok so 10 mb for 5 minute call. Hmm, with unlimited call minutes and shared data, some people could wind up with a huge bill.

Well the call minute side would be going away. The only thing I can see that won't cause mass mutiny, is Verizon differentiating between call data and regular data. That way calls and texts are still unlimited and don't affect your data usage. But I think I am giving VZW too much credit thinking they wouldn't try to squeeze us for every cent we have.

Will we see the days of "free nights and weekends" data? I survived college by calling my parents after 9:00 pm. In fact, I still call after 9 most the time, out of habit.

traditional voip consumes about .75Mb/min

in other words the average user consumes about 500 minutes per month for calls......... thats would be about 375Mb of data over voip

however my guess would be that VoLTE will utilize a more efficient protocol which requires less data
