Help The recurring "all text messages deleted problem"

Lurker
Hi,
It sounds like this has become a big problem. After this happening to me for the second time earlier, I decided to google the problem again.

Alot of people are saying they had an antivirus software that they deleted and not had a problem since. I have no antivirus software, i never have... so it can't be that.

I also read someone had thought it was to do with HTC sense sync. Well mine is set to manual due to the fact that everytime i sent a message it synced, even though it was set for every 3 hours. This meant my battery was dying very very quickly.

Also, someone suggested deleting HTC Sense sync and restarting the phone and your messages should come back. Tried earlier and never worked.

I've had my DHD since November and its happened twice. My settings are correct i.e. the 'delete old messages' is off.

It's clear this isn't a rare problem, just google it. Theres forum after forum of complaint.

I don't know if this happens on other Android phones, if it does, its clear its Android. If not, its obviously HTC.

I haven't done this 'root' thing (I don't know what it is yet), I haven't messed about with the integral stuff on the phone. I've simply downloaded some apps and some games, added some pictures, taken some pictures etc.. I've only done things a phone is "expected" to do.

I also do not use any other SMS app except the stock one, people had also suggested that they use Handcent or another 3rd party SMS app which had caused the problem.

I had updated my phone to 2.2.1 on the 1st Dec 2010, well I think it was then because that dates on the software details on my phone.

The first time this happened was the 19th Dec and then again today 18th Jan.

I started to assume the issue was with the updates until I started digging back old posts that go back to August. Now i'm thinking it's either 2.0 software or just the 2.2 software. My sister has a Xperia X10 with the new 2.1 update so I'll ask her to keep an eye on it.

It's about time HTC or Android got their head out their *** and sort this out, it's clearly becoming a serious issue that if not fixed will become the reason people stop buying these phones. I think the DHD is an awesome phone but this a right pain in the...neck.

If anyone has any other "solutions" please add them to this I'd like to give them a try, although I'm not resetting my phone, there is no way that'll work. Thats the same as an I.T. Consultant saying "Have you switched it off, waited about 30 seconds and switched it back on?"

Also I mentioned the syncing problem above, if anyone else has this issue please also post here.

Apologies for the long post but I think this may help with others who have the problem.

Thank you!:o

How ******* funny! My phone literally just lost all its messages a minute before I opened this thread! First time it's happened... I thought I was safe.

******* HTC.

If it helps, I received a notification of a new message, so I looked at my phone. Only to find that there were no messages at all on it.

Thats what happened the first time it happened to me. I just hope this gets sorted quickly as it seems to be a very common problem. I think everyone needs to send HTC an email from their website to get this sorted ASAP. Also send Android one if thats possible.

it happened to me once over the weekend!! grrr sooooooo pissed off!!! however lucky i had the "sms back up" app from the market :P. help alot but still lost alot of important messages. i thinks it's htc and android to be honest :(

I know hear that 2.2.1 isn't being issued anymore and people are reverting back to 2.2. This may hopefully help, I myself havent tried it yet

Also, Android 2.3 will hopefully hit the phone soon and that may sort out this mess!!:)

I had the exact same *** happening to me just a few minutes ago, and it is the third time it happened.
I get a incomming txt notification, I grab my phone to check it out: Everything is deleted. Both on my phone as on HTC Sense.
My Sync crap doesnt work well so I cant make backups either as of yet.

Like the OP, I tried the same nonsense with removing and re-adding HTC Sense account: No joy. Even HTCSense says: You have no messages! Yay.

Major problem to me is that it also deleted all my locked messages! Well ****, it's not like they are locked for a reason or anything

Time to give HTC a **** call tomorrow... They either fix or take it back.
They cant say I have to do a Factory reset either. They made that joke the last time, after which (after major hesitation) I did do a factory reset. Well, surprise.. Problem isnt fixed. :(
Even if HTC is not to blame; it's the OS they use: Let their software patch it. Their HTC Sense makes constant sync's to my txt messages. So why is it deleted completely out of that account aswell.. -_-

I had this issue twice, October & November last year.
I installed SMS Backup+ so i'd have a backup, but it hasn't happened since!
The app is outstanding. It creates a label in gmail called sms, updates as soon as I send/receive, and groups the messages on gmail by conversation thread with the other persons name etc.

I haven't had to try a restore yet, but even if it failed I wouldn't mind as the gmail has them all.

so i am joining your group of people with lost smses

i just figured that all my msgs are gone, it was a shocker!!

and now i find it that has happened to many.

i have been recommending people to switch to android phones, but these bugs are a problem and i cant recommend to anyone.

Just became a 'me too'er', and they vanished from the sense account too. The same sense account I can't normally get much sense out of worked perfectly when it came to deleting all messages, but my phone is still in the ocean off the coast of West Africa... hmmm
Incidentally, Sometime during the night I woke up and was surprised to find that my phone had restarted, and was asking for my pin. I suspect this isn't a coincidence.

Ok, so for the first time ever sense was able to locate my phone. I do apologise, but still miss my old texts!

I have had this problem a couple of times now with my HTC Desire HD. I was using the standard SMS on the phone and I have now switched to Handcent with no further issues - until now!!! Twice in the past 12 hrs my phone has lost all the SMS messages. Thankfully after the very first incident I got the SMS Backup & Restore app which backs all my messages up every night automatically. Nonetheless, this is really infuriating. If it does it again, I am taking it back to the shop to get a Windows phone!!! Shame I would lose all my hard work on Angry Birds and Tank Hero... :( But rather this than fart about with message restore every day!

Android REALLY need to sort this out.

It is a HTC problem. I urge everyone to download an app to take backups of your sms so if it does happen you can restore it.

Samsung Galaxy S. Same thing happened to me about an hour ago. I got a new message notification. Pulled down the notification bar. Could read the start of the message. Clicked the message and all messages were gone. The new message icon and the start of the message stayed in the notification bar until I turned the phone off and back on again. Using default SMS app. I am using SMS Backup & Restore and it was only a couple of days ago that I last backed up but I'm still not thrilled.

Just happened to me!

I now can't receive texts. Screen saying I have 3 texts, but cant read them.

Also I can't receive, do I have to factory reset. I could really do without this today!

Me too

happened to me three times now & all I get from HTC is quote

"There is currantly an issue with stability and reliability on Htcsense.com, and we're working on getting this solved. And here is the official statement we've released for our customers:

Due to greater than anticipated demand for the HTC Sense.com services, some of our customers are experiencing stability and reliability issues that are unacceptable. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused; please be assured that HTC treats this as a very important issue and we are working hard to improve the experience for everyone.
We hope to have improvements to the service out in the very near future to help some of these issues and we will continue to communicate with our customers throughout the process. Thank you for your patience."

:mad::mad::mad::confused::mad::mad::mad:

That's been the standard response for some time now, they appear to be more interested in bringing out a swathe of new handsets rather than focusing on making features that were used as selling points for previous handsets work as they are supposed too.
