The Skype app is here..

i have skype correct.rar on my sd card and i'm looking at it in astro, but where do i go from here again?

Un-Rar it on your PC first. Then you'll see the .apk file. Move the .apk file over to your SD card and install with an App Installer.

not my day so far... to change from .rar to .apk you just change the file extension right?
you want to unpack it, not rename it. Changing a file extension like that will make the file corrupt :/

Uh...no. You need a program to do it. I'm on a Mac, so I don't know what that is on the PC... maybe unrar? like unzip...
winzip and winrar.

neither of those are free.

just get the freeware version called 7zip. it takes care of .rar and .zip

It doesn't use WiFi yet. You have to use 3G, so you're not alone, I'm sure everyone has to go through that.

I read WiFi may be supported later on.

Fring lets you use your Skype on WiFi right now.

There is an rar app for android called unrar, it has to use OI File Browser to locate the file but i downloaded the rar on my phone and used those apps, worked great!

Just a quick heads up. If you upgraded to 2.1 on your Eris (which most of us have), you will get a lovely message saying your phone is not supported by Skype at this time.

You have to manually download and install the APK from this thread instead of going to the market or asking for a link from the Skype or Verizon sites.

This wasn't the case for me. Mine works fabulously.

Mine too. I wasn't able to get it from the original link or the market, but manually installing the .apk file works fine on mine. Skype to Skype calls are good as well. Going to check my online Verizon account to see what it says... voice or data. I assume Data.

I agree with the above... why would you use Skype to call an non-international land line over using your cell??? They must be banking on a bunch of people just dialing away thinking all the calls are free...

I'm guessing that as long as you are only calling your Skype contacts with Skype all should be free.

Side note... When I did call, Google Voice did pop up asking if I wanted to use it or not. I have that set for GV to ask on each call. Personal pref.

Edit : Wow... used the "My Verizon" app on 2.1 for the first time. Looks MUCH nicer than when I used it on 1.5!

If you're not concerned about international calls isn't the only reason to use this is if you are calling Skype on their someones PC?

Ok.. Essentially, Skype is GOOD for you in the long run, it uses VOIP (Voice Over IP) technology to allow you to make phone calls through the internet, which is now available through 3G.. you will NOT be charged for minutes used while speaking with someone on the other end with a SKYPE account. They can either be talking to you on a PC or on their phone using a Skype app..

IF you want to use Skype to call actual phone numbers, THEN you have to pay, but you pay Skype, not your wireless provider..

SKYPE = FREE talking! if you know how to use it right..

The best thing to do, is to get the people you talk to most to create a Skype account, whether it be on their phone as an app, or their software for PC..

Much like twitter, Skype works best the more friends you have on it..
Soon enough, I am sure they will be integrating the Webcam Feature of skype to be used with Phones, and allow you to video chat with other Skype users with our phones!

Moral of the story being, It is great for some people, those who don't understand why, either check it out, research it, or just plain don't use it! :) simple.

It will definitely chew up the battery faster than without it on. but the processor usage is much smaller. I was using the beta before it was pulled to work with verizon. At that time the CPU load was well over 70%, now its around 20% (less for sure).

Now we just have to hack the application to work on the WIFI network... on to the hacking! >=-)

Thats going to be a Great hack! although, I highly doubt anyone would actually go over the 5GB "unlimited" limit for data using skype, Wifi would still be nice to ensure a good quality connection, because Sound Quality suffers the slower the connections..
