The Skype app is here..

I called zerovertex and the number came up as 140449418599.

How does it work exactly..is it using data or minutes?

I just realized that can't be a real phone number... it's 12 digits... So maybe it IS 3G... Wonder if you can talk as surf the web at the same time? *glares in AT&T's direction*

Ok.. Essentially, Skype is GOOD for you in the long run, it uses VOIP (Voice Over IP) technology to allow you to make phone calls through the internet, which is now available through 3G.. you will NOT be charged for minutes used while speaking with someone on the other end with a SKYPE account. They can either be talking to you on a PC or on their phone using a Skype app..

IF you want to use Skype to call actual phone numbers, THEN you have to pay, but you pay Skype, not your wireless provider..

SKYPE = FREE talking! if you know how to use it right..

The best thing to do, is to get the people you talk to most to create a Skype account, whether it be on their phone as an app, or their software for PC..

Much like twitter, Skype works best the more friends you have on it..
Soon enough, I am sure they will be integrating the Webcam Feature of skype to be used with Phones, and allow you to video chat with other Skype users with our phones!

Moral of the story being, It is great for some people, those who don't understand why, either check it out, research it, or just plain don't use it! :) simple.
I get all that (I'm a Skype user) but I'm trying to boil it down to practical use (this would be the "research it" phase).

Can a mobile Skype user receive another mobile Skype users call for free? Regardless, aren't all mobile Skype users on VZW and therefore get free calls to each other anyway? So back to my original question - excluding international calls, is the only value of this for making Skype calls from your VZW phone to someone using Skype on their PC?

Regarding the Skype video from phones, which phones have front facing cameras to make this practical? Again, I understand the theoretical.

I have the leaked 2.1 Rom installed on my Eris. I downloaded and installed this apk. When I run Skype, it says, "Sorry, Skype couldn't detect your phone number and will now exit." Has anyone else seen this and know the fix?

I guess we are just looking at it from different perspectives, you are looking at the instant gratification aspect while I am looking at potential.. You are correct with your arguments and current restrictions of Skype mobile.. It probably won't be very useful this evening without a lot of set up time, but eventually soon, when more people hop on board, it will make a little bit more sense. They may even bypass the entire APP aspect of Skype and just start making Skype phones.. Who knows.

I am actually far less than impressed with this Skype app... I was psyched about it for months because it seemed like it was gonna be like WOW!! But his app is simply bare!! I expected an array of features similar to the PC version for taking them so long to release this app.

Before I get flamed, I realize that improvements/updates come with time and feedback but I just had higher expectations. I just thought that it would be a bit more customizable I guess :/

Oh well, it'll get there eventually

Nope, that's a weird one. Did you program your phone (*228 opt 1) after installing 2.1? It seems odd that it can't access your phone number.

Got skype running on 2.1. Needs more notification options and settings. Otherwise pretty cool.

It supports group chats unlike other apps.
Can't call groups though. We'll see if i can accept calls from group chats.

Yes I did. I have been using my phone for a week and a half on 2.1. I have not had a problem with any other application. Should I get the 2nd leak?

Sure, couldn't hurt. Maybe it only works with the 2nd leak. I don't know if anyone tried with the 1st leak. And then you won't have the Google sign-in bug anymore. :)

What do you know? That was the problem. Installed the 2nd leak and all is well. Thanks. :):)

I'm on 1.5. Got the download from the market. It installed okay, but when I try to use it it says "Skype mobile can only be used on Verizon Wireless phones" I'm on Verizon...any ideas?

Ok, let me break this down. Can answer this because I just did the training on it today. (ok will break this out I am a customer care rep for Verizon Wireless (ducks head in fear of flying objects)) If you make Skype to Skype calls, they will be free no usage of minutes, Skype to domestic landline, non Verizon Wireless numbers will go against your minutes. International calls will either be billed through Skype for thier international rates or Verizon Wireless rates depending on if you use Skype or not for the call. Any other questions?

Thats going to be a Great hack! although, I highly doubt anyone would actually go over the 5GB "unlimited" limit for data using skype, Wifi would still be nice to ensure a good quality connection, because Sound Quality suffers the slower the connections..

Ummm I beg to differ, my monthly usages average is 1.950GB... if I start using skype now... hehe... i'll go way over. :-) I'm a Verizon abuser..

Oh for those that want to use skype over wifi... and 3G without the Verizon Nazi system.... Fring works just fine. I've been testing both, and it would seem in my (few tests) the skype app is actually using double MIPS/CPU cycles to just stay on.. fring is well below. Although Fring does take up almost 2MB more than skype while running, it still uses less cpu power.

they both receive messages at the same time (maybe milliseconds difference, but you can't tell). The audio seems perfectly fine on both.

So far the verdict is Fring is using less CPU cycles, and can use Wifi.
Skype app, uses less total memory, but forces you to turn off your wifi or it wont work.

I only started using Fring because of its ability to use skype voice over wifi (not just 3G).

Is there any difference between google voice and skype? Which one's better in your opinion?

I tried both (at the same time though) and they virtually crashed my phone. So I want to basically try to keep one or none just wanted to weigh my options. I tried googling but I'm still confused...

Ok.. I'll bite. When is the OTA coming? :-)

That is a question I myself would like to know as I am using a Eris and do not have a known date for the OTA of 2.1, sorry RubberDucker.

00smurf.

Also knew I opened that can of worms when I put any other questions. Should of limited it to just Skype. LOL:p

They are really different apps with different focuses, though, when you use them your Eris, they are practically the same for making calls. With Skype, you can make minutes-free VOIP calls to other Skype users, as well as IM with other Skype users.

Google Voice (if you get a Google Voice number) lets you associate multiple other phones to that number, so that anybody who calls the GV number rings all the associated phones (even that can be tailored by contact group) so you can pick it up on the phone that you wish to use. It also gives you a different SMS texting service with that number, plus it cam act as the voice mail service for the Eris if you wish, optionally transcribing the message and sending the transcription to your email account and/or by text to your phone. Both services give you a cheaper method of placing international calls compared with Verizon's service.

If I had to choose only one, it would be Google Voice for me. But I have both. Without WiFi support, I'll likely not use Skype Mobile much, plus I really don't use Skype all that much anyway.

The lack of WiFi doesn't bother me. I really only use WiFi on the Eris when I'm at home. When I'm at home, and I want to use Skype, I would tend to be on my computer anyhow...

I'll be using Skype when I am out and about and already on 3G... I don't leave it running. I only open the app when I want to chat with someone...

So the way it is setup right now works for me.

And I too use Google Voice. I use it primarily for the free texting.

The number is 10 digits, it dials a access number. No 3g gets used for skype to skype calls. Unless you add it to f&f you're gonna use mins

If I make a Skype call to an international non-Skype number, I get billed by Skype but do I use up minutes?

It's not a matter of calling local number in us. Its a matter of using wifi to call a us number when you are over sea. I was able to call my folks with Skype on my PSP when I was in Taiwan. Can't do that with the phone unless I want pay for international phone plan.
