Root The "so you upgraded to z4 and lost root" guide.

(virgin mobile volt ,stock v4 from the box, unrooted) I just got an OTA notice for an update from zv4_08 to zv5_07. Has anybody else seen this? I've been holding off on rooting hoping that somebody will come up with an easier root method. (Bricked one already and I'm extra leery.) Anybody got any idea what this new update looks like inside? Also I might, and that's a big might as I haven't looked yet, be able to upload the file for someone more knowledgeable to poke around in.

It's already been uploaded, there's a few threads on the topic.

alright he'res my problem. i have previously rooted, flashed cwm, and installed the zv4 rom. i then gave my mother the phone to use after everything was set up. phone ran great for probably 3 weeks until the zv5 update was sent out. i forgot to mention to her not to install the update, and you can imagine what happens next. although the update did not install, i am not stuck in a situation where i cannot do anything but boot into cwm(6.0.3.5 or some shit). i can pull the battery and start it up hours later and it goes straight to cwm. i tried to boot into fastboot, but the phone is now not recognized by the pc so i cannot sideload either. it stays on "waiting for device". the only thing i have tried that works is flashing something from the sd card (which probably doesnt even work). backup and restores fine, but cannot boot into the rom itself. it goes straight to cwm with that flashing home LED constantly on.

im thinking if i had a flashable recovery, i can start from there

You have to flash back to zv3. If you have a backup, you can restore it, otherwise your starting over.

that would be fine and all but like i said the phone boots straight into cwm no matter what i do

update: thanks for the advice, thats what i did. somehow i deleted the laf partition without making a backup (not sure how that even happened to be honest) am i stuck in fastboot forever?

No... It will be restored when you flash a radio.

Man thank you! I thought it was a lost cause.. The volt isn't my DD - i have a nexus 5 and a moto x so i am pretty familiar with everything adb and fastboot wise.

its nice to see the entire development process unfold the way it has for the volt... especially after the summer. Once again thanks for your time..

Side note: if you are new to flashing, I can't stress enough to read every detail of an op. I've been flashing for years but these guys have laid out everything you need to do, don't just skim over it like I did.
