Did other companies have touch screens before the iPhone? Palm, HTC, LG, Sony and Samsung all had touchscreen devices before the iPhone. Did Apple invent the idea or concept of "slide to unlock"? No, it was on Windows CE devices back in 2005 and was first seen on a phone in the Neonode N1 (something like that), but Apple was issued the patent for it. Was the software for the iPod stolen from Creative? Yes and they settled with Creative over the theft. This actually may have been the starting point of Apples new road of litigation for all. Did the design of the iPhone already exist in the form of an LG phone called the Prada before the iPhone came out? Yes, the LG Prada (2007) and the iPhone look very similar and if the roles were reversed then LG would probably be facing litigation. Does Apple take ideas from app developers and jailbreak developers? Yes, but so does Google and everyone else. Did Apple take the new notifications panel from Android? Yes, of course they did. Will anything I have listed change your friends mind about the iPhone, Apple, Google or Android? Highly doubtful. He likes his device and you like your device. Arguing with anyone about which device is better is a waste of time. You could (possibly) prove that 80% of the iPhone and iOS were stolen from other companies or idividuals, but what purpose does it serve? The only thing you've really done is spent a lot of time and probably money on research for your friend to say, "Eh, I still like my iPhone better."
Apple is an amazing marketing company and they do that better than any other tech company on the face of the planet. They do it better than Google and part of Google actually is a marketing company. They could probably sell ice to Eskimos if they really wanted to. While they may not have invented all these great and "magical" things that they sometimes claim to, people who understand it have to give them some credit. Even though they didn't invent it, they did bring it to the general public and make it main stream. They made people believe that they needed this technology and that not having it would make their lives poorer overall. Look at the "If you don't have an iPhone." commercials. We all know that everything in those commercials is available on Android, but the general public doesn't know it. We know that it isn't just the iPhone that can use both data and voice at the same time, but the general public doesn't. These are the things that set them apart and even though there will continue to be better phones and Apple will continue to "invent" products that already exist a lot of people still won't care and will still buy an "i" product. Look at the new iPhone 4s. Most people in the tech world went, "Meh." at the announcement, but they sold an absolute ton of them at launch.
There is a smartphone out there fro everyone. Use yours and don't worry about what others use. Fanboys are annoying to everyone.
