Root The Ultimate Guide: S-Off, Recovery, Root, & Jelly Bean

Got tired of waiting. Looks like no harm done. rebooted phone. everything works as far as I can tell. bootloader still says tampered, unlocked and s-on.

i assume I am running the right distiller

file says moonshine_k2_cl_1.11.653.1

It was stuck on test 3: said waiting on bootloader and I got hypnotized by the dots. I woke up and much time had passed and my wallet was missing.

back to the drawing board.

I do have a CWM backup though. But don't have CWM recovery on board phone yet.

Always did have trouble with Moonshine.

rebooting of pc and phone should make it run completely. are u running stock ics boost? y don't u update with ota thru phone, unlock bootloader again after ota becoz ota will relock it then run the k2_cl 2.06.653.5 moonshine.

Disabling the antivirus ended up being my problem. Be sure to go into antivirus and disable not just close it.

I will try that tomorrow. I needed to use my phone. Lol.

I am running Boost ICS stock used the ICS Moonshine.

I will check that My HTC doesn't have a !. I will disable Microsoft Security Essentials.

I will try to run as Admin. Got a Vista laptop free a while back after my Win 7 Dell died. Not sure how to run as admin.

I did download the Boost JB Moonshine. If all else fails I Will go somewhere with WIFI and get the JB OTA and hope it works.

If so, I will have to unlock the bootloader again. Then do a CWM backup of JB stock. Then run JB Moonshine and hope it works.

Then install CWM

If I back up after successful Moonshine would I still be able to restore my backups of either ICS or JB stock with no problems and switch between the 3? Kernels too?

My HTC? Where are you seeing that? When I plug my phone into my computer, it just shows up as "Android Phone" under "Other devices" in the device manager. Did you install HTC Sync? If so, you should uninstall it because it messes with a lot of things.

Check out this link. It might help.

Clockworkmod should restore whatever backups you created.

I didn't ever look in device manager. When I attached the phone I thought I saw My HTC, but maybe not.

I did uninstall HTC Sync. I figured that the drivers were OK because ADB commands were working. But I will check device Manager.

Sorry! I gave you bad advice! My Windows 8 (I needed Windows, and this was a free copy...) decided to mess with my drivers, so I had to reinstall them. "HTC Android Interface" should appear under "Android Device".

No problem. I appreciate the help. I think that I might have provided inaccurate diagnostic info so we are even.

Gave it another shot today. No luck.

I tried to uninstall all the USB drivers for the HTC to start over. I had installed them using the HTC Sync install. Had gotten rid of Sync already.

I then installed using the Naked Drivers. Phone then shows up as HTC Android Device.

I did run as Administer. I probably did not completely disable AV, so maybe it was that.

Same result as last night.

I would mention a minor detail that should be added to the OP. It probably goes without saying in this era and does not affect many readers but here it is:

You must be connected to the Internet while running Distiller. It checks for updates at the beginning and will not run if it can't.

What does Step 3 look like if all is working properly?

if i remember right after step 3 it will says finished, successful and shut down the phone. try a different usb wire. i ran the distiller on windows 7 x86. vista should be same. i didnt use any naked drivers. i did have android sdk installed though, and i used htc sync to install my drivers then uninstalled htc sync only not drivers. are u sure u are running ICS 4.0.4? check in settings to see if ur rom version is the same as the version of moonshine u using.

Thanks for the info. Yep 4.0.4

I do have the SDK installed but I copied the ADB fastboot dir into a new directory C:\adb

I also copied everything else for all the steps into that directory. I did not change the search path or environment variables.

I Will try a different cable.

The one for your Prevail will work with this phone but the cable that came with the phone SHOULD work Wy. If it doesn't them it's damaged.

Also, the drivers I used and am still using came from the HTC Sync download. When you go to control panel/ programs, on your pc, HTC Sync and the drivers are not together. I just uninstalled HTC Sync and left the drivers.

I haven't had any problems at all with them.

I tried the Prevail cable too. I Will go back and try the HTC sync drivers again. That is what I used last night, but could have been other problems

With the naked drivers:

adb reboot worked
adb devices. Worked
Fastboot devices. Returned nothing

Fastboot reboot. Said waiting for device

I disabled AV and Firewall

Uninstalled Samsung drivers

Ran CMD as Administrator

I thought all HTC sync was uninstalled. But...
If I change phone USB mode to HTC sync, the laptop asks permission to run it. It does not show up in add remove program list

In device manager
Android phone shows HTC interface

Disk Drives show HTC USB
CD drives show HTC USB

Do you have usb debugging enabled?

Yep. Forgot to mention that.

Mostly kept phone in USB charge mode and on.

Step three booted to fastboot USB and stayed there.

I saw a succesful Moonshine post mortem screen on XDA that did not show any dots after waiting for fastboot. It went to waiting for USB. Etc

Mine just draws dots after waiting for fastboot and my phone comes up in fastbook USB mode

only an idea. but go to settings then power and uncheck fast boot if already unchecked then check it. I believe fastboot commands only work in bootloader.

Now, THAT sounded promising. Fastboot WAS set to ON. I turned it off. But no change. Got Dots. I waited for 2 rows.

But, you are correct about the commands.

Fastboot devices
Fastboot reboot

Work in the bootloader. Duh, I should have known that.

Maybe I should try a different computer. Any problem with XP?

if I were u i would update to jelly bean thru settings/about with ota then try s-off using jelly bean version of moonshine. but if u want s-off with ics then maybe try using linux version or maybe try running moonshine in safe mode but idk if it can be run thru safe mode. oh and xp should be fine.

I had to use a second computer to get my phone S OFF. I believe it is because my desktop has two devices listed, but only my phone is hooked up. Listing a second emulator, but I have none set up. If you have one, I'd definitely give a clean start a try
