The Unofficial Official Rogers Dream>Magic Hardware Upgrade Update Thread

I'm having trouble getting this upgrade through the website. I meet the requirements, but it's only showing 4 phones in the options, a couple of sony phones and a couple of lg phones. i would prefer to do this through the website rather than phoning in to rogers since im out of the country at the moment and won't be back until long after this promotion is over. any thoughts?

Call in. It's very efficient. Many users are reporting issues with the online system anyways.

I just made the call to Rogers. Got an extremely helpful representative. Provided us with the UPS tracking number, and gave us $15 off our bill for the next 3 months for the "fiasco" we went through. Give it a try!

Just got my tracking number! It's through UPS and could be here tomorrow! :D

I'm still laughing. The CSR checked ours out personally, and it said no info available. He LOL'd and said it's probably sitting on the dock awaiting shipment. I'll give a shipment window when I know. Does anybody know what kind they are using (Saving, Standard, Overnight AM, etc)?

It is strictly to the Magic. There are a few reasons for this:

1) It's an HTC to HTC device. I think HTC is taking the hit on this one.
.

If HTC is taking the hit, I don't think Rogers should have forced us to extend our contracts. Should have been a straight exchange.

Mine says standard.

I'm sure Rogers would use any chance to take advantage of us.

Just fyi, here's an excerpt from our original statement when the Dream to Magic upgrade program was first introduced.

"We pushed hard on your behalf and are pleased with that part. When it comes to Dream, we share in your frustration that the device does not have the required on-board memory for an upgrade. We've reviewed this internally and believe that Dream users should be able to have the same HTC Android experience as those who purchased the Magic. So, we are offering our HTC Dream customers a limited time opportunity to upgrade from their current HTC Dream device to the HTC Magic."

:-)

I've got the same error on rogers.com, as well. I'm also unsure if I'd be allowed to do this upgrade while I'm waiting for a replacement Dream (from an unrelated hardware issue, my trackball's not clicking). Would that get in the way of upgrading at all?

Status report on my end...

Back in Jan. when this exchange program was put in place, I was put in contact with Lisa at the OotP (thanks to RogersMary!) After several phone calls back and forth, and a bit of negotiating (if you recall, I explained in other threads that I don't have a 3-year data plan, only voice), Lisa was willing to send me a phone. However, at that point, the 911 issue reared its ugly head, and I was stuck... Lisa promised to call me back when the program was re-instated.

I kept checking this forum just so to be aware of the dates of the new program, and scheduled myself to call Lisa before the end of the day today if she hadn't called, as the Feb. 14th deadline is looming. Well, she kept her promise and called me herself this morning.

She was proposing to send a new Magic (only one) at the usual conditions (free.) Well, I was asking for BOTH to be replaced, as my spouse is as geeky as I am (albeit maybe not as vocal about it...) She put me on hold and seemed to be checking my Family Plan conditions. She finally came back, and told me the second phone was not normally eligible (why not? She didn't say. I paid DETF on both phones last November...) Anyhow, she proposed that she could bend the rules a bit, and the compromise is that I'm getting both phones changed, but I have to pay the normal upgrade fee ($35) once (i.e. $17.50 per phone) instead of for each phone. I also have to return both of my Dreams.

Considering what I'm getting (2 Magic phones eventually upgradeable to Android 2.x), the $35 fee is not a big deal. Also, as I have no need of FOUR phones (2 of them not on any network), I don't mind returning the 2 Dreams. It's not worth fighting for these fees over the phone, my time is more valuable than that.

However, I do come away from this with a bad aftertaste... Once Videotron gets online with its own cell-phone network, I'll be looking VERY closely at them... I'm already a land-line, HD TV, and Internet customer of Videotron, and have absolutely nothing to say against them so far.

The tech may have been nice but she didn't know what she was talking about. Call again. If they say they can only upgrade one ask to speak to a supervisor.

Just tried calling again today and it seems to have worked this time. Supposedly will be sent a tracking # soon. We'll see what happens...

Got mine today. Absolutely love it! :D

Two final questions; for those of us who didn't bother to update our Dreams and ended up loosing data, how long will it take for data to turn on again on our Magic Pluses? 24hrs?

For current Magic owners; how scratched up do the Magics get? I never used a protector for my Dream and it looks brand new. If I pocket my Magic with no case and make sure it never meets a set of keys or coins, will it remain nice and new looking?

Edit: All right, so I hadn't called from my Dream since they started forwarding to Rogers. When I first phoned using my new Magic it went to a rep. She was easily the nicest of the reps. I've spoken to during this debacle and did a network reset (I'm guessing). Everything works fine now.

My Rogers Magic came with a leather slip case. I use it always. Was there not one in the box when you got it?

C'mon people I know it's exciting to think that you can exchange your Dream for a free Magic. If it's is HTC who is absorbing the cost of this you shouldn't have to extend your contract with Rogers.

Rogers is rewarding the people who have just become customers and bought their HTC dreams in December and paid a lower price for their handset by only making them extend the contract for 2 more months.

People like me who bought the handset when it came out in June and paid $149-$199 are being asked to extend my contract 8 months! So we paid the higher price for the handset and then have to give rogers 8 x $70 amonth more. THat's $560. I know I don't want to give Rogers anymore of my business than I have to. As soon as my contract is up i'm finding another company.

If you call Rogers and explain the problems the 911 fix has caused ie. I have my data cut off intermitantly until i remove the battery and restart and I miss phone calls. They won't make you extend your contract! It takes a little while on the phone going through the various escalation levels with the CSRs but it's worth it.

Do you really trust Roger's to properly deal with the Magic and do the OS upgrades they have promised anyway? I love my android but you can also get a diffrent phone for free if you fight it.
Before you go ahead and agree to this deal try asking for no contract extension.

Right now I'm considering buying out my internet contract and selling the phone to cover the cost. That will save me $30/month. I mainly use wireless anyway.

Yes, it came with it. I'd prefer not to use it, but if I have to its not a big deal.

I'm not too concerned with the extension of the plan. I doubt there will be any plans better than 6GB for $30/month, unless WIND expends drastically.

Hey everyone, as an update, I was able to get my free HTC Magic ordered today. The CSR rep was nice enough but she wasn't up to pace with the whole 911 / upgrade thing. In case you call, their system has it registered as the "Magic Plus" instead of simply the "Magic" with a list price of $79.99. That is the one you're looking for. (And, of course, you don't pay $79.99).

However, the CSR did let it slip that she heard that Rogers was "moving away from Android". Whether this was conveyed to her as an internal communication, heard as a water cooler rumour, or if it was a mixup with the whole 911 thing, I will take it at face value and assume that Rogers will downplay the Sony X10 and avoid future Android phones.

Looks like Telus is the only one who can satisfy our Android needs now...

My update. Got the tracking number last night, expecting to check on it after work today. Got home and the Magic was already here! Less than 48 hrs, so not bad. Just playing with it now, seems pretty cool, but still finding the soft keyboard a little tricky.

Well my tracking number is still reporting Billing Information Received 24 hours after the tracking number was assigned. I really don't like this (I dealt with UPS many times, update is posted as soon as it is picked up). Does anybody have their turnaround times?

I'm wondering if by moving away from Android she actually meant moving away from HTC devices. You have to admit, HTC shafted Rogers with the Dream and Magic.

Once attention started to turn to LG , just look at how quick they stepped up to the plate and offered a 1.6 update to the EVE. If I was a carrier that is the company that I would rather deal with.

But this is only my opinion, could be Rogers will let Android die a slow death and only carry the devices that they are committed to presently. Only time will tell.

Wind has unlimited data for $35. They start throttling after 5GB though. Still I think Wind's is better for me. I barely ever need more than 500kbps.

Ordered on Jan 13 i should receive it 3-5 days.. ont the 21 still not picked up by UPS, I have had my tracking number since Jan 18, still no phone. rogers placed a tracer on jan 21. Talking with UPS i got confirmed that the phone never left Rogers. Been calling Rogers every 2-3 days since. Rogers assured me that they would make sure that UPS pick it up this time.

Im supposed to get a call on friday to check that i got it. My hope are no too high. Maybe you should call early because a tracer with UPS is 7-10 days and then Rogers promise to call you once they get the result but they just dont

Good luck

Received mine during dinnertime. We're charging that one up.

I'd like to note that I'm not using the Dream post-911. We just factory restored it, so far so good. I hope the SPL can be broken though :S
