Help The weirdest problem with a Note 3

Phil_Rose

Newbie
Hi all. I have a Note 3 and have loved it up until last night when someone called me and couldn't hear me as all they got was me sounding like a 'digital chipmunk'.
After some trial and error I discover that, if I am on wifi my bars on my phone drop to zero. Turn wifi off and they spring back to life. I need to use wifi at home or I'll go over my limit. Can anyone suggest any reason why this might happen all of a sudden? I had recently installed Skype but I took it off thinking that might be the problem but no luck.
Thanks to any Android masters out there!

Phil

Hello, Phil! Welcome to AF! :)

Did you happen to confirm that being on wifi actually messed with your outgoing calls? And you could hear the other party just fine? Turning wifi off and calling the same party made a difference?

Those are some interesting symptoms.

I don't have T-Mobile. Do they have a number you can call for support?

I think I have sorted it out and I will explain what I did for anyone else who toddles along here! I could hear others fine but they could only hear the chipmunk sound. So, I go into settings-more networks-makke sure Wi-Fi calling is Off THEN hit Wifi calling to go into settings-Connection preferences- make sure it's set to Cellular Network preferred and then, at the top, make sure Wi-Fi calling is set to OFF there too. Phew, seems to have worked.
Thanks all!

The 'digital chipmunk' sound, also known described as 'screeching', 'chirping' and a myriad other names has been something that is plaguing these phones depending upon the provider. It was really bad with Sprint and supposedly it was a software issue for which they recently rolled out an OTA to fix it.

I have it on occasion and I'm on Verizon. I called to report it and they said they were getting reports of it so hopefully there will be a fix for us as well. They had me do a bunch things to try to mitigate the issue including setting the preferred mode to LTE/CDMA (mine was on Global) and also turn on and off the dampening of background noises.

The problem with mine is that it only seems to affect certain areas at certain times. I finally called in for a help ticket to have Verizon check our area and low and behold there were other reports so they are looking into it to see if it's a signal strength issue near my home. That seems to be the worst, phone calls between my wife (iPhone 4) and me when either one of us is at home. So far, only one of us being at home is the common denominator. I do hear a little chirp here and there on occasion when not at home but nothing as bad as when it really kicks in. It's very frustrating making the conversation almost impossible.

I'm am doubtful you found your issue. If it's anything like mine, it will crop up again. But maybe not. I could not find the settings you wrote about on my phone. Can you be more specific? I wonder if our settings menus are different because are on different providers.

Sounds like you are talking about a different problem to me. The OP can hear fine, the person he is calling was having trouble hearing him.

I had the problem you describe. I sounded great to others, but I could not understand them, half the time. :(

I have had a number of good calls now since Sprint pushed out their patch.

edit: I don't have those options to choose from on my Sprint phone either.

Have you tried turning off the WiFi calling option? Your on TMobile and this is on by default when you connect to a WiFi connection. I have not had good luck with the WiFi calling feature on the Note 3.

Go to settings, Device, Call and toggle the WiFi calling off, this will use the TMobile network to make calls and your Wireless home network for data.

Best of Luck
