Root Theme/apk question

I've found a clock in a CYM7 theme that I quite like, but I dont particularly want the whole theme.
Can a person (me lol) unzip the theme, extract the clock apk and replace the clock on my phone with this one from out of the theme? or am I oversimplifying things...?

hi CC.
your post started me thinking....can I strip apks from my rom
to make it lighter? ie. 2 themes, rom manager, adw etc

cheers
dan

hi Dan. thanks.
will it mess up the rom or is it safe?
assuming I just take out normal apps.

will it save space?

cheers

....heard there is an app that will unzip and rezip
the files.not sure what it is called

I have only done this on Redux following Dan's tip of using Winrar. Open up Winrar, search for the ROM zip and double click on it EDIT: [don't extract it as Dan points out below], find system app file and delete. Be careful what you delete though. You should see the size of the extracted file come down with each file deleted, useful if you use custom mtd etc. Always exit Winrar by clicking the x in top right of screen.

just to elaborate on what madhatter (not sure if you want me to use your real name) said, just open in winrar, NOT extract.

Yes it will save space, but obviously only if you are s-off, to take advantage of being able to re-use that space.

think you will have to just flash the theme CC.
or would using UOT kitchen to customize theme work for you?

If its a themechooser theme, its not going to have an apk for the clock in it. I could have a look at the theme if you could point me to it (or better yet, attach it here)

Ah ok, thats just a flashable theme which replaces system.apks

Yeah you can just get the apk out.

Here you go

Yeah. If you're S-off, you can just use root explorer or something. Delete the original DeskClock.apk in system/app and replace with that one. Then delete Dalvik just for the hell of it.

If you're S-ON, you need to use adb to delete and push the new clock.

Or I could just modify the theme so it only has the clock in it and you will be able to flash it.. Give me 5...

Take a nandroid first, please.#

Looking at the script, it doesn't delete apks individually. It just replaces whatever is in System, so this ***should*** work, but please take a nandroid backup first.

Needs flashing with signature verification off by the way

Thanks!
Will give it a go after work when I have more time.

Going forward... you said Ah ok, thats just a flashable theme which replaces system.apks are there some themes that a person can extract an apk from, and some you cant?

Indeed.

There are 2 types of themes.

1) Flashable themes.

Generally these replace the framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk with themed versions. On occasion, the theme author will also theme some of the stock applications (like the theme you showed me) but often this isnt the case.

2) Theme chooser themes. CM and some other roms have managed to port the themechooser / theme manager application by tmobile to their ROMS. These switch between themes that are installed as apks. These contain no apks at all.

No problem mentioning my name - edited my post in case someone reads it first and extracts the zip file.

Cool Charlie ;)

Likewise, I like to be called Dan :)

I know some other names too, but again... Not sure if they want to be known or not.

This didn't turn out quite as I anticipated.
I flashed the zip, but it gave me a small round pink clock which is an app not a widget.
When I add it to the homescreen its just an icon. When I tap on it it opens a deskclock with its own 4 icon dockbar for alarm/gallery/music/return home.
:(
