Root themes and such

First off, is it hard to use theme kitchen? I couldn't understand so I'm curious if there's a video floating around on how to use it. I'd like to contribute to all these wonderful themes.

Secondly, I have an old jailbroken(poor grammar) iPhone that I was able to get the images from some of the themes I acquired through Cydia. I'm wondering if there's a way to use those images in replace of the battery icon I have now. I'm taking the battery that shows up when I plug my phone in. For instance, I have a wonderful Simpsons theme for the battery that burps when I plug it in and is a purple donut that slow fills with color as the battery is closer to charged. I hope that makes sense.
