Root Things are quite slow in here now.

Trouble is, it's not sufficiently above the spec of my Desire for me to do it.

Right now there are several reasons why I should not buy a new phone. If I had to buy one today though it would be the SGS3, no question. But if I'm not buying one in the next month or two I may as well see what the next Nexus phone(s) look like, I reckon. Though the "smart stay" feature of the SGS3 does seem to be a potentially big step in useability for the way I use the phone, and that's not going to be in a Google ROM (though I believe has been ported at some level - not followed as the Desire clearly can't use it).
 
Yes, I'm amazed at how often the smart stay icon informs me that my desire would have annoyed me by turning off the screen.

The whole stock rom experience is almost futuristic. I'm amazed people even bother with AOSP.
 
Uses the front camera to check periodically whether you are looking at the screen, and keeps the screen from turning off if you are.

Its not. The SGS3 is like a Mercedes E Class. They always say "If you want to see what tech will be in your family saloon 10 years from now, look at an E Class today"... And its similar with the SGS3. There's loads of cool motion and audio control and other cool stuff that AOSP just doesnt do.

For example, My alarm in the morning reads me the weather, my schedule for the day and the news.
 
It will take me a bit of time to upgrade and join the exodus. An SGS III would cost equivalent of approx $750 here. No contracts here to help out.

Went through a flashing frenzy. Changed from oxygen after almost 6 months. Went through variants of ics,redux,mildwild,cm7 and sense in less than 24 hours. But back to Oxygen again. Could not check out dGB since links seem to be down.

Ok I see that. But I cannot access Mattman.org - Home itself let alone the zips.

Guess some routing issue or some such. I will try after a day or two.
Edit: Sorted out.
 
Checking out CM 7.2 now. Great ROM.

WiFi dropouts have decreased I think. I am not sure. Earlier used to have frequent dropouts since I am at very low signal level.

I also like the phone dBm indicator in status bar.

My desire is looking great with some HTC One X wallpaper taken from Zedge.

Ok - I have to know....doesn't the SGS III just seem far far far too big after using the Desire.

I am still (strangely) more than happy with the way my Desire is running, but of course, sooner or later I'm going to feel that I'm behind the time and need to catch up - but all these phones just seem far too large.

Did people (SU, for example) worry about that to begin with, or not an issue at all, or got used to it? I'm interested, because the size of it is probably the only thing holding me back. But it's doesn't look like I'm going to get a bang up to date phone with all bells/whistles that isn't the size of a small TV...

Interested in hearing others' views...?
 
Actually, the Desire now seems far, far, far too small. My head almost explodes when I have to look at the missus' Hero screen
 
You will get used to it pretty quick and wonder how you ever managed to get by with a smaller one. Even the new iPhone is rumoured to have a larger screen - it's the way things are going now :)

Yeah, this is how it is for me.

First HTC Hero.
Nice big 3.2" screen

HTC Desire,
Nice 3.7" Screen, makes Hero look small.

SGS3
Nice 4.8" Screen, makes Desire look small like Hero. Makes Hero Screen look like digital watch
