Help Things that Jelly Bean have screwed up!

Well-Known Member
Issues with Jelly Bean update, over previous ICE 4.0.4.
Anything mentioned below, was NOT an issue on ICS.

Swype (my main interface to the phone).

Swype in text messages and and emails, facebook etc still works fine.

Swype in default or Dolphin browser is rubbish.
The rest of the swype gripes below refer to in browser use, Dolphin or default browser.

Defining rubbish, these are random in their appearance, but always the capitals on every word.:

Every swyped word starts with a capital.

Often no spaces are inserted so all words run together like this HelloMyNameIsAnnoyed.

A wrong word replaced by one of the offered alternatives usually adds the desired word to the beginning of the first line of a text box, not affecting the wrong word.
This can either be inserted before the first word or over the first word!
Example:
I swype:
How are you today Kerry

I get HowAreYouTodayBerry
or How Are You Today Berry

so, I wanted Kerry, and it is offered as an option, so I choose it.
I may get:
KerryHow Are You Today Berry
or
Kerryre You Today Berry

So, instead of using the offered words, I will use the delete key.
But, say I got
through
when I wanted though
I delete up to the r then manually type the 'ough'. The manually typed bit has first letter capitalised.
Result:
ThOugh

Swype can be VERy slow. Over a second or more to show a swyped word, or a deleted character.
Sometimes it is fine.

Long press on text to select it, to correct errors, often does nothing at all.
Changing to Android keyboard instantly works.

The extra keyboard functions like cursor up/down/left/right, copy/past, delete right, Select all, rarely or never function on a browser.

Other areas in Jelly Bean:

In vBulletin admin control panel, long press on a text field to select it, then copy it to clipboard copies all the text field heading for the entire page instead!
It's actually imposible to select the contents of a text field, even though they highlight blue.

In email client, long press on an email address in the body of an email now no longer selects all the email, but wither side of the @ or the @ alone, depending where you long press.

In email client, long press on an IP address in the body of an email now no longer selects it at all. It is impossible.

In both browsers I have, I can long press on a last post icon on any forum, as usual, pull up the "open in new tab" etc menu, as usal, tap Open in new tab, see the menu item turn blue, then menu disappear, and nothing happens.
Usually 3rd time it works.

In dolphin, typing in a url, when part typed in, but the url you want is offered as one of the liely ones, tapping it again turns blue, and it goes away, but nothing else happens.
I was unable to make it work with many attempts.
This worked in the default browser.

They sound more like app issues and not jelly bean itself. I have a few apps that were funky but the developers have since updated them to work with jelly bean.

Swype is not part of Android; it is written by an app developer to run on Android. So, it isn't Jellybean's fault that it doesn't work. Often, when Operating Systems are updated, it causes some software to not work properly. It is then up to that developer (in this case, Swype) to fix their software according to how the OS changed. So, rather than being upset at Android (which definitely is better with Jellybean) you need to be upset at Swype, that they haven't fixed their software quickly enough to keep you happy.

I'm sure, if you give it a few weeks, Swype will work just fine under JB.

I am aware that swype is 3rd party, but I was highlighting areas outside the text input area as well, fundamental operation of the android OS, such as the inbuilt apps (email/browser) and operation of copy/paste, long press selection etc.

And, for those of us not using Swype, we have had no issue with those things. If other people were having these problems, you would see lots of complaints on these forums.

Now, I'm wondering what Android version you came from. Did you just get a Nexus and went straight to Jellybean and have never used ICS? I ask because Android did change some things that used to work with long press but are now done differently (but those changes occurred in ICS, not JB), so there could be some learning curve.

the version of ICS I came from is in the first line of my OP above, and title of thread.
The non swype issues I have outlined are there using the android keyboard too.
Some of my issues will affect a very small proportion of users (for example copying out text fields in vbulletin admin control panel) but many I would think affect many.
In my other posts I have had quite a few "and me" type responses..

But again, vBulletin is a third party app, unless I'm not understanding something. Dolphin is also third party. The email and, I assume, stock browser issue would be Android issues, for those you can see if your issue has been reported and add reports here. The fact remains that most of your criticisms seem not to be about Android, especially your larger problems, but rather than third party apps are not yet working properly, especially for having complained in at least three separate threads.

I've heard absolutely amazing things about JellyBean...And I'm talking praise coming from some serious phone nerds, like myself and alot of other peeps on here.

Either way I don't ever use swipe, not my cup of tea...but it really sounds like you saying 99% of your issue is with swipe with the JB update, I don't believe that would be enough to really deem a version of Android not good. Maybe your apps aren't really meshing well with Jellybean?

true, Dolphin is also 3rd party. But like the default android browser, and stock android email client, it was working perfectly prior to jelly bean, under ICS 4.0.4.
my vbulletin issue is when browsing via the stock android broswer, not a 3rd party app.
The vbulletin web page is not at fault, workes perfectly on a PC and also did on ICS 4.0.4. It is clearly JB browser not handling it correctly.
Thanks for the link

a lot of my issues are indeed with swype, or rather what JB has 'done' to Swype.
This is because I specifically bought the Nexus as I browse forums a lot, and don't wish to use such apps as ForumRunner or TapATalk.
So I want a good keyboard, better than stock. Which Swype was.

But aside from that, the Android functionality in stock browser I am finding is not functioning as designed, for example the fact that trying to copy the contents of a text field on a web page actually copies a large amount of text from another area of the web page.

Hmmm...Mine will be here Monday, I do lots of copying and pasting. I'll comment on your Thread after I put my Gnex through some tasks.

I've been running swype since the first jelly belly ports and now am running Liquid's JB Rom and have had no issues with swype at all. Are you sure you have the latest version of swype from them directly? Something sounds corrupted. I know a few other people using swype that are not having any issues either.

I didn't read every post so if I'm being redundant, oh well.

I use Swype beta on JellyBean on a VZW Nexus. When using Swype on the stock browser in the address box, it was failing to auto space. I switched to Chrome and solved the problem. Swype has been just as awesome as it always was in every other place on the phone.

Swype beta and Swype are slightly different so depending on which you use mileage may vary.

Also, eating more ramen should solve any other Android problems you have.

Well, JB is pretty new still, a lot of apps haven't been ported yet... so maybe a Swype update will fix several if not all of your issues? Excluding those that are not swype related.

From my side, I'm loving JB.

Has anyone had an issue with hotspot tethering since Jelly Bean.

I could have sworn it worked before, now I can connect but there's no internet access.

Non rooted, GSM.

I have 3 out of 4 devices on JB now, all of them on stock and only rooted with custom recoveries. Before, they were on ICS 4.0.4 with no issues to speak of. My biggest gripe since moving to JB is that all of the devices are loosing their WiFi connection during the night, even though the setting for WiFi is to keep WiFi on during sleep - I checked this and it is right. I never had this problem on any other Android OS. I like to keep WiFi on permanently and now, when I get up in the morning, I have to turn it off and then back on to get it to connect to my wireless router. The router runs on the same settings and firmware as before the update so it is definately not the problem.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is it only me?

I haven't had this issue with my Nexus, running 4.1.1 OTA.

A simple Google search shows a ton of people having issues with Swype on Jelly Bean. I'm sure once the devs for Swype update it to work with this latest Android version, it will work just fine. ;)

To be fair to JB, this is really predominately an issue with swype. Wording is important and probably this thread should be more about Apps that currently is not 100% compatible with JB rather than what is wrong in JB.

Its the app developer's issue. They have had JB long enough to recompile their code. If there are significant problems they need to address it to their customers. The app can't expect JB to be modified for the app's sake.

If you bought a 1 bedroom home and you got married and had 2 kids well you can't expect the condo to sprout 2 more bedrooms. You need to expand your home.

This thread is more about swype than JB anyway at this point with a sprinkling of stock browser.

For most of those issues you just have to wait until the 3rd party apps are updated to work fully with JB. Just the usual growing pains with a new OS, the apps need time to catch up.

The Long Press Open In New Tab, In Default And Dolphin, I Swear Is Getting Worse. A Few Times Today I Have Given Up After Over 10 Tries. Doing My HEad In.
NEVER happened On Ics

I was a looooonnnng time swype user but after i updated to jellybean and started experiencing a bunch of bugs with it I eventually gave up, uninstalled it and switched over to swiftkey; but before i did that i gave the stock jb keyboard a run. After i got rid of swype all the problems were gone! I miss it but i dont miss the bugs I havent payed attention to whether or not the swype developers have updated it for jb yet but in the mean time swift key gets the job done for me.

The only problem I see with JB (the ROMs I've tried for my Sprint Gnex anyway) is that the stock JB is not as good as the ICS keyboard. It's missing the punctuation marks at the top of the keyboard like ICS has...
