Root Things you'll Do With ROOT

Ive been running home for about a week now and have found that as long as you dont reboot the phone, sense will eventually go idle instead of continually running in the background. Havent paid attention to how long it takes before it goes idle though.

thanx for the tip =]

Thing I will do is first get 2.1 for sure ;-) I use Cricket so there will be a couple of fixes I will be able to do like reprogram the MMS settings for that fix and to see if I can make a work around for a simple IP to work on the market and apps. and get Google maps, Google Goggles

i think if we get root before 2.1 the first thing I'm gonna do is root my phone, then not sign into AF until a month after 2.1 is released.

I am really looking forward to overclock as well.... however- i was looking at the hero forums and it looks like they are not able to get over the 527mhz.... Am i wrong?

I wonder if there will be a sense 2.1 rom. I do like the espresso one. I just hate the soft phone button on sense. we have a hard phone button

HTC was built directly into the OS for the Eris
Even when people default back to home its running.
I wonder what might happen if its taken out completely

Yeap, that's what I've found too.

JrzDroid, I don't believe Sense is "built in" to the OS. It simply runs as a "service". Once someone gets a root shell, they can confirm this by navigating to /etc/init.d directory (I think that's the location ... or it used to be back when I was a heavy linux user).

What I want to do, but don't know if it's possible, is turn my phone into a WiFi hotspot. That way my son, for example, can get internet service on his iPod touch (in the car, for instance).

That would be a great feature, I saw the Palm Pre commercial yesterday with the program to turn it into a Mobile Hotspot. Pretty cool little feature

should be possible. Hero rooted has wireless tethering capability.

the things i do with root are illegal in 13 states and 5 provinces.

the one thing i wanted to do with root was only illegal in 6 states, 7 provinces, Canada, all but 3 square miles in Australia, and is considered the national past time in a tribe in Southern Africa

I will effectively erase all the stupid background proccesses that run without me needing them and taking up the already little bit of RAM we have.

Would having all your apps on the SD card make the phone faster? If so, yes please.

amen sir, everything you said i agree with

No, it wouldnt be faster(the read/write of the internal memory is faster than sd) you would just have more room for apps. well if you had a class 6 sdcard it would be faster than the sd that comes with the phone, but still slower than NAND(internal memory).

I can't wait for ROOT. I will be first putting a great 2.1 rom. Possibly look into overclocking, but I'm not sure if I should. After that I will get myself a great Wifi Tethering capability because I am sick of PDANET cutting out after about 45 minutes. Go Go Acidbath!! Huaa!!

Because when ever i go to look at my photo's, or use better cut, or manage applications, it's always slow and laggy as hell.

I have no issue with space, not even close to filling up 8g.

I a noob when it comes to the android phones. i understand rooting, clocking for the pc anyway, and installing apps on the sd card. However, how fast can the phone really run when clocked. Does it really make that big of a difference. Also I herd from a little bird that some time app, when stored on sd card, can some times get randomly deleted. Is this true.

ive already had a friend of mine install 2.1 for me. But can anyone tell me where i can get the wifi tethering for the eris

PDAnet or easy tether.

Both have free and paid versions, the free versions block you from secured sites (paypal, etc.)
