Thinking about getting the GS2

My poor little prevail is in its last days (power button works when it wants to and it shuts itself off in mid text) its done this a few times before but this time its really bad. I like the GS2 and the fact I can get it for a lil over $200 right now buuuuut... is it worth it? Money is very tight for me and I don't want to go from one phone that isn't working the way it should to a pos from the get go lol. Any input would be great :) thanks in advance
 
Yea its showing online for $199.99 marked down from $249.99. Either one isn't bad for what ya get. Sadly none of the stores around me are carrying them since the S3 is coming (from what I was told). *shrugs* was looking at the HTC One whatever its called but I dig the 16gb internal the S2 offers more than the 8 I believe it is that the HTC has
 
Depending on how service is where you live, be prepared for the phantom keypresses at certain times when the signal is low or you are about to receive a call or message when the signal is low. It isn't directly dependent on weather the signal is low or not, but my phone has been completely unusable at one point when I was in a certain area and could not press or do anything. Also if you use gps don't count on it being any more than 20 meters accurate most of the time, so if navigating sometimes it will skip over roads in google navigation.

That is a hardware issue with your phone unfortunately. My S2 never has the phantom press issue even with low signal. I also found that once I did a GPS data update my GPS is much more accurate (10 to 20ft)
 
No phantom keypress issue here either.

The S2 is still a good phone with a wide development fan-base already installed ... but

If I were in the market for a new phone I would think more of the LTE handsets. WiMax is eventually going under even though it keeps getting extended, WiMax also has limited availability.

LTE is getting wide-spread institution and obviously will be around for years to come. LTE will easily cover more ground than WiMax and has the greater bandwidth.

How does one do the GPS data update?

As everyone else stated, I have no phantom keypresses issues at all on any rom that run, its a extremely nice running phone............:D
 
WiMax is contracted until 2015 and even then I highly doubt they would just completely drop it... think how many customers they would risk losing doing so.
 
Thank y'all for your comments :) I ordered the S2 Titanium earlier and will have it sometime this coming Monday. I cant wait lol.. o.o

I think I will as well :) ... the Prevail was my first android so this is a hell of an upgrade for me lmao. I'll always have a love for the prevail and the community it has here that turned it into the bad ass lil phone it is but mine forced me to move on :P Doc I hope you don't mind but I sent you a friend request and thank you for the gesture xD I'm sure I'll have some questions hah. Going to be very busy here Monday night with all the stuff available for the S2.

Thanks greg... although now I have two phones to watch lol.. the gf and a few of our friends are still running the prevail and I did the same mods to theirs that I had mine running. Not sure if I should be happy that everyone comes to me with their phone issues or not lol. At least I have a pretty fair knowledge of the phone so I can help them and try helping with what I can over on the forum.

No worries Tank, I came from the ZTE Warp and the Prevail, my first overclocked androids and loved it, the GS2 has so much more, you will fit in here fine dude. Once you get your new toy we will go from there and get you setup, what you may want to do is start shopping lol, theres a lot to choose from and it depends on what you want, how fast you want it and the options you want, so start looking around, ask questions and we will help you any way we can man........;):D
 
Is there an Odin for the S2 I need to download? I was fond of Bloodawn's CTMod. Not sure if there's anything comparable to that? I'd like to start downloading what I need now so I have it ready to go when I get my phone in :P. I'm glad you know what I'm talking about since you're a former prevail user yourself lol. How hard are these to flash compared to the prevail?
 
Checkout the rooting guide and the one stop shop. They contain links to what you will need If following the rooting guide the recovery kernel you use for rooting will depend on weather you have ICS or JB. Flashing for the phone is not bad, though a bit different in one respect. Custom recovery is tied to the kernel in this phone and not a separate thing like it is on the Prevail. This phone is the exact same thing as the Epic 4g Touch, and that means we have a lot of ROMs available to us. Yeah this is a big jump from the Prevail, and I am sure you will enjoy the horsepower the S2 has (I gave my prevail to a family member so it is still running good). Welcome to the group.

Ive heard it was the faulty material, or not enough material, that separates the hard keys from the radio and keeps the RF from interfering and making the buttons press themselves.

So if its faulty material than I can see how some peoples phones would be fine and others not, but if its not enough material from a faulty design then shouldn't every phone be affected?
 
Not necessarily, there could have been faulty raw materials that would only effect certain "lots" or certain manufacturing facilities.
 
I'll have my phone sometime Monday (got the shipping confirmation about an hour ago). The real kick in the face is that its in a FedEx terminal two and a half hours away from me right now.
 
Whether it was faulty shielding material batch or bad installation, I call those Friday afternoon or Monday morning phones. (made too close to o-beer thirty or hangover phones)
 
lol... well hopefully they don't actually make them per order :P haha. Monday cant come soon enough.. my lil prevail is about to be tossed out on I-65 lmao. The power button has completely crapped out on me so now to turn the screen on I have to plug it into a power source.
 
got my phone in.. going to start charging it up here in the next 20 minutes or so then its time to surf around and see what all I can do :P
