Thinking about getting the GS2

Sooo.... I've been reading.. and reading.. and reading... still confused to all hell.. looks like I wont be doing anything to my phone for a good bit. The information I've been reading leaves one guessing at best. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking what's out there in anyway at all.. just doesn't add up to me is all I'm saying. My phone is on FL24. *takes a big hit and tries to calm down*

That is the last version of Ice Cream Sandwich released for our phone. I would start by upgrading to GC01 Jelly Bean at least. If you are wanting to root, then you could flash the rooted version at the same time. It is quite easy to do.

Ill recommend you to flash a recovery , make a backup, (just in case you ever want to go back to ICS for some reason). then upgrade to GC01 as code said and go from there.

Okay guys if y'all don't mind could you please help me (I needed help getting my prevail going the first time as well but still feel ******ed). How do I flash a recovery/make a backup? To upgrade to GC01 is it Samsung Kies I use to do so? I'm looking for root and a ROM that isn't loaded with bloatware and other useless crap lol. Also if there's one that supports tethering that would be cool too but not a must need.

OK well here is a great starting point as was stated above. Here is the link to the one click install of boost's latest (and final?) ota update for our phone. Gc01 jellybean 4.1.2. This is the rooted version link. All you have to do is have Samsung kies installed on your PC, and make sure its not running while opening the one click installer. Download the .exe one click file and run it. Now once that is up on the screen, place your phone into download mode by shutting it down, then holding down the volume down button and the power button. Now plug your USB charging cable for your phone into your computer, then into your phone. If everything is kosher, your phone will show up on the one click installer as COM (#) (some number) , you'll see it. After the program recognizes your phone in the yellow COM box, just hit the start button and let it do its thing. The program will say it was succsssful and will reboot your new ROM. Unplug phone from computer and enjoy.

Or if you want to jump past this stock rooted gc01 setup, find out which ROM you would like to try in the one stop shop, read up what to do for installing that ROM, and if you have any,specific questions about it, ask away. Though if you select one you want to try, pretty much all the info you will need can,be found in the OP's in the one stop shop
 
For touch wiz I recommend blu Kuban. For aosp I recommend baked black bean. I'm on blu Kuban now and its really sweet. Not usually a fan of TW but this ones cool. I really like.baked black bean. Its my favorite. Its aosp 4.2.2

Just to you know this is for the SGS2 (E4GT) and not the prevail. ok now if you want the FL24 (ICS) agat's recovery to make a backup you can get it here. You have 2 options @ this point, the one click install or the tar file (which is the one i recommend).

For the tar file you will need mobile odin or pc odin to flash it. If using pc odin( which can be found here), you will need the latest samsung drivers for your device installed on your pc. Kies (which can be found here) is a good way to get the samsung drivers installed on your pc.

For mobile odin, you need to be rooted. Framaroot which is an .apk is an excellent way to root your device. Framaroot can be found here .

ok to start off you need the Samsung drivers for this phone, that can be done just by installing kies (linked to in the rooting guide). Don't worry about running kies right now. You then can do a one click install of GC01 from here: (steps must be followed in that order)

[ROM][ODIN][TAR]SPH-D710BST GC01 (GC01 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Root/Stock)

The exe is a self extracting archive that will create a folder with a self contained installer. Run the installer, put your phone in download mode, connect it to the pc via the USB cable, then when you see the com port light up on the installer, click its start button.

After that you will mostlikely want to flash in the recovery kernel for GC01 so you can have a custom recovery. You can get it here:

Okay y'all I feel like a complete idiot but I'm stuck.. I have my phone running rooted GC01 but would like to use The Blu Kuban. What do I need to get to that point? I'm reading and just not seeing the big picture I guess or maybe I'm overthinking it but I don't want to get my phone stuck in a bootloop so I'm asking for help. Sorry for being such a noob again lol
 
You need to download the blu kuban rom. And gb27 modem. Then in that blu kuban installation thread i posted above, pick one of the two kernals. I picked agat. Flash it with Odin or mobile Odin. Then turn off phone and hold power button and volume up to enter recovery. Once there, wipe data twice. Then wipe cache, then dalvik cache. Install ROM. Install modem. Then reboot system. As long as you are coming from gc01 your phone will already be partitioned correctly for TW, so all you need to do is follow the above steps and ur golden.
