Root Thinking about rooting but need a few answers...

Hi,

I have had my (AMOLED) Desire for nearly a year now and it is running the latest official unbranded Froyo.

If the wait is not too long I will probably install OTA GB and check it out before rooting. So my questions are as follows:-

- Will I still be able to root after the OTA GB (as I know HTC did say they would prevent rooting at one point).

- Will I be able to get a ROM that has some of the stock HTC Widgets/Apps that are not on the market.

- From a security point of view how safe is a rooted phone as obviously HTC would not knowingly put any trojans in but how can I be sure that a system baked by someone else hasn't?

- How stable are non-official roms compared to stock?

- I have heard about baking your own Droid, how easy/safe is this to do.

Chances are that I will root but I feel I should give HTC one last go.

Cheers

Moot point. Its hard to say. The latest CDMA 2.2 upgrades prevented rooting and still remain unrootable (but this is close to being fixed). HTC have decided to no longer prevent rooting, but what will be in that update, we have no way of knowing. I would recommend trying rooting first if you want to try it. You will be able to unroot with a 2.2 RUU before OTA GB

There are GB sense ROMS avaialable, in the root sticky here is a link to XDA where all the roms are theyre separated by type.

Using the XDA thread for your resources, these roms are all the best common ones. Dont get roms from anywhere else.

Depends. Some are experimental (like sense 3.0 roms) but like for like, I would say more stable, less bugs

- I have heard about baking your own Droid, how easy/safe is this to do.
You'd have to elaborate on that a little. There are ROM kitchens but they change minor things on existing roms. Maybe cover that later on.

Chances are that I will root but I feel I should give HTC one last go.
