Thinking of selling off my contract with Unlimited Data (A couple Q's)

Hey all,

I need some advice! I am thinking of selling off my contract, which still has VZW Unlimited Data on it so I can move into one of their Shared Data plans and get it with my family since overall it will be cheaper.

With me having to get a phone at an unsubsidized price, it just seems like it will cost a lot more for me to keep Unlimited. I looked at my usage history and ever since I started my new job where I don't have the opportunity to watch Netflix movies all night (I was on a graveyard-watch shift where I didn't do anything LOL), I have only been using 2-4 GB on average. With the Share Everything plan, I plan to get the full 12GB.

I would be getting my parents phones. My mom doesn't really use much data but my dad might use a lot but he is very careful to not go over.

I would need to sell two lines which includes a Mi-fi line (That is what I gave my parents to use as their mobile data.)

Overall, I would be saving $10-20/month sans the cost of all the new phones we would be getting.

Does anyone have any idea how much I can sell my unlimited contract for? Should I even consider selling off my unlimited line?

Other question:

Let's say I decide to just keep my current line so I can keep my number... Will I be able to change it to a new Share Everything Plan without extending my current contract (and not get a new device, of course)?

Thanks for the help!

I am pretty sure that Verizon would just love to give you the shared data plan, and let you give up your unlimited data plan without any other change. It would be to their benefit overall, and I am positive that you can change your plan at anytime without re-upping.

Could you explain how you save on the new plan? I am looking for situations where people are actually saving on the new plan.

My plans w/ Verizon:
900 Minutes w/ Nights+Wknds, 1000 SMS/MMS, Mobile 2 Mobile, Unlimited Data + Insurance

5GB Mifi (I purchased this for my parents to use.)

Monthly Bill: $140.00 after work discount & taxes.

Parents plan w/ AT&T
My dad says their bill comes out to $80-90 per month for 2 lines (They have the iPhone 4 but do not have a data plan.)

Monthly Bill: ~$85

Total between the two: $225.00

Projected Share Everything Plan:
3 Smartphone Lines @ $40 each = $120.00
10GB Data @ $100 = $100.00 ($83.00 w/ Discount)
Insurance @ $6each = $18.00
Estimated Taxes/Fees = $10.00 (Total Guess)

Total: $231.00

So yeah, I'd be paying more. (I miscalculated how much my parents were spending on their plan) But my parents would have the convenience of not having to need that stupid Mifi device and they can just use their phones which will have LTE on it (and Hotspot if they ever need it). We are pretty good at watching our data usage. My mom will pretty much not use any data at all.. maybe 200-500MB. I will probably be the heaviest user at 2-6GB/month.

I'm thinking now of waiting until the iPhone 5 comes out so my parents can get it and hopefully Verizon's version of the Galaxy Note will be out by then.

Ugh so many things to think about!

Ok, so now we know you will actually be paying more. Now what would your cost be if you went with standard tiered service?

If you are asking what I think you are asking...

If I were to put my parents on my account... and to compare apples to apples (they would have to get a data plan unlike their current AT&T situation)...

$99.97 (3 Lines Talk) + $30 (Text) + $100 (5GB Data x 2) and $30 (2GB Data x 1) = About $231 projected with tax and discount.

Wow, pretty much about the same LOL, though my calculations might be a bit off.

Edit: Forgot about insurance. Yeah the current plan would cost more.

Hate to burst your bubble, but Verizon's caught wind of people doing this, and whenever a contract is transferred, they are forcing people onto the new plans.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize they did that... and they shouldn't be able to do that but oh well.

Update:

After talking with a representative on Verizon regarding selling my contract with Unlimited Data, he informed me that the other person would be able to KEEP the unlimited data... Is that rep misinformed?

Yes, you were misinformed. Verizon no longer allows line of service Assumption while maintaining unlimited data. Whomever assumes you line of service will be required to move into a tiered data plan.

I hate Verizon. I really do.

What kills me is, for just a *bit* of effort, they could have truly kept customers happy while offering something new, that addressed their long-term concerns about band-width usage. On the tiered plans, the 2GB plan could have been $20 instead of $30, and then the conversation would have been about VZW offering a lower-priced plan that met ~95% of users needs- Yay Verizon! Instead, they have to push the value down every time.

Then they got rid of the $5 text plan used by people who aren't teenage girls, and forced us onto this $10 "unlimited text" add-on I didn't want, need, or ask for....

Now this share plan fiasco that reduces end-user value yet again...

Do they not *get* that forcing your customers *backwards* on the value scale creates a huge undercurrent of negative "good will" that sets them up to lose big as other competitors catch up on things like network speed and coverage?

They are trying to milk us now, and opening the door wide for their competition down the road. They'll pat themselves on the back for the extra revenue near-term, while people patiently wait for their terms to expire, then go shopping...

I used to feel like Big Red was the place to be, but now I am itching for someone else to undercut them at the knees, and I'll jump ship as soon as my "early termination" window is up, it's open season.

You pay less but you also get less in terms of data.

That's how I save a little on my wireless bill. My wife and daughter and I only use about 2 to 2-1/2GBs of data per month, so we can get by with the 4GB shared data plan which is $70 - $14 (my wifes 20% corp discount) for a total data cost of $56. Before our data cost was $86. ($30 + $30 + $30 - $6) My wifes corp discount only applied to her data whereas now it applies to our total data bucket.

Now the voice plan is a different story. We have the 1400 minute plan with F&F, which was $110 - $28.60 (again my wifes corp discount which was 26%) for a voice plan cost of $81.40. When you add in the $9.99 for the 2nd and 3rd lines, our total voice plan is $101.38. Our new voice plan is $40 x 3 = $120

So our old bill was $101.38 + $86 = $187.38
Our new bill is .... $120.00 + $56 = $176.00

Some of the features we also have like ringback tones and VVM are the same for both plans so are a wash. Not sure about the taxes and fees but they will be similar I'm sure. So I'm anticipating a savings of about $9. Not a huge amount by any standards, but $9 is $9.

We all have 3G phones now and when we upgrade to 4G phones in the near future, I'm anticipating our data use will increase. So if we buy the 6GB bucket, which will be $80 - $16 = $64, this will bring our new wireless bill to within a few dollars of our old bill. Still a buck or two savings. So there you have it. :smokingsomb:

Obviously we save because we are very light users of data and even though we had unlimited data we didn't need it. It's the heavier users of data that will ultimately have to pay more. "Pay to play" so to speak. Data is the commodity that has the most value today and there is a finite amount of it available, which becomes a problem during times of peak usage. I'm sure that's why Verizon has chosen the shared data plans as it's method of choice to control its usage.

Best of luck to all of us in the future, :)

Update:

After talking with a representative on Verizon regarding selling my contract with Unlimited Data, he informed me that the other person would be able to KEEP the unlimited data... Is that rep misinformed?

Yes the Rep was as they say "misinformed" haha. They would love to get you on a new share plan now, then tell whoever you sell the phone and line to, that as the new owner they will have to choose one of their current plans to transfer it over to them.

After reading through this and other forums this seems to be happening a lot. They are willing say whatever it takes to get someone off of unlimited and generally don't have the authority to make this kind of promise.

They even tried to lead some Samsung Galaxy S3 customers to wrongly believe they were no longer eligible to keep their unlimited data even though they were but that backfired on them. See http://phandroid.com/2012/07/09/ver...mited-data-if-their-plan-was-wrongly-changed/
