Thinking of trading my razr for the nexus, some questions.

I payed attention to the google I/O presentation today and naturally i was like, "Damn, i had the gnex and switched it out for the RAZR, and ill likely never get jelly bean" (im just now supposed to get ics) so i had some questions before i jump on craigslist looking for a trade.

1. Battery life! this was the original deal breaker for me, has it improved since the recent updates?

2. when will the vzw gnex likely get JB? does anyone know?

3. anything new since about a month and half after it came out happen with it?

4. I remember the sound being below par (in loudness and call quality), has this been fixed?

5. overall is it a good idea to go back to the gnex at this point? (with the razr getting near stock ics and all.)

6. hardware vs software buttons? (opinion)

1. battery life is hugely dependent on screen time
2. JB will be out in July, so depending on how many changes, maybe September?
3. new radios in 4.0.4; signal still subpar (IMO) compared to Moto, HTC radios
4. no direct fix; I use Volume+ to help
5. why go back when SGS3 is coming?
6. I like my software buttons

how exactly does the battery hold up for you? do you get a full day?

and @the SGSIII thing, for one im not that interested in the SGSIII, and that is quite a bit of money...

also, another thing, if i cut off 4G, and go just 3G, how much does the battery life improve?

My 2 cents:

1. Only thing that helped me is rooting and modding. Stock was horrible before and after update. I used to get a half day before I started to panic, mostly because I'm in a sketchy 3G area. I don't use 4G so I can't compare.
2. Not anytime soon. September at the earliest.
5. Tough one. I had the Maxx for a little bit and went back to the Gnex and now I'm regretting it. Razr HD (a.k.a. Bionic 2 ) might not be out for another couple months, so if you don't have any major headaches with the Razr I'd stick with it, especially since JB is not a huge upgrade over ICS.

I have not seen any difference in battery life on my stock VZW Gnex since 4.0.4. Signal strength is still very poor indoors. If you have a Maxx, no way would I trade for Gnex...but I don't mod my phones (yet).

I'm holding out for Razr HD. I'm "one and done" with Samsung. Any advantage to having a Nexus (for a stock user) is null and void with VZW for the most part.

Haven't seen Razr HD referred to as Bionic 2 before...interesting.

Telling ya, it is all about screen time. Play a game, watch videos, text some, surf the net - they all use screen. The best I have seen ( and believe) is 2 hours of screen time for Samsung extended battery.

I can get a full day, yes, as long as I am in good signal and don't play a bunch of games.

I'm on stock Gnex and saw battery improving about 35% with 4.0.4. Overall UI, camera opening speed and 4G hand-off got better too. Otherwise it's largely unchanged from from stock 4.0.2. It's not huge update but good enough for me to hold onto until next Nexus or SGS4.

And, of course, the day after I send back my Nexus, Google announces Jelly Bean. But still, no software update in the world can fix crappy Samsung hardware so I made the right choice.

Don't do it. Don't take a step back for the nexus. Have fun with the horrible radios

Thats actually kind of funny, when i was contemplating switching to the razr, they said dont downgrade to it...

Anyway, anybody know about how much the battery can be improved by installing custom roms/kernels, and underclock/volt'ing?

It's darn near impossible to say, but if you held me hostage until I gave you an answer I'd say ~25-30% improvement across the board

that sounds pretty good, looks like i could do with stock or official extended battery and just use one of these (Amazon.com: Seidio BACY38SSGNLN-BK Innocell 3800mAh Super Extended Life Battery for Use with Samsung Galaxy Nexus LTE with NFC - Retail Packaging - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories) on a busy day.

Also @jbdan are the lyrics from your sig from voice of truth?

Actually, in my experience. The actual OS uses little to no battery. At least compared to the screen (its SAMOLED not LCD, so it will use more power based on the amount of area lit on the screen). Personally, I can get about 2-3 hours of screen on time. In standby, more around 16-20 hours (so long enough that it won't die in your pocket while you aren't around a charger). Granted I'm rooted so I have a little more control over how the OS and processor use power. But there is really nothing you can do about the screen power use, as its an unfortunate downside to the technology.

Still doesn't turn me off from it however. Just get used to charging the phone every night (because its such a hard thing to do right?)

Screen on time and 4G data usage are the biggest hogs...and GPS will drain you too. Running all three will kill a battery like you won't believe. If you are using navigation you better be plugged in to a 1amp charger.

That said, for normal usage, I found about a MAX of 4 hours of screen on time at 70% brightness. This is the standard battery doing nothing else. Lower brightness = longer life.
