Root This complicated to root?

I've never had to do anything this complicated? I have to go in and unlock my bootloader just to root the rez? One click just sits there so I guess I have to.

first off... lots of things in life that are worth having are not easy ;)

on to your question. what is your question,exactly?

if the question is simply: "can i relock if i want to unroot?" then the answer is yes. you can relock the bootloader at any time,tho you do not need to relock it to "unroot". once you have submitted your identifier token to htc and gotten your unlock code,you can use that same unlock code to unlock your bootloader as often as you want to.

however,if your question really is: "can i relock so vzw doesnt know that i rooted if i have to return my phone?" then the answer is no. if youve looked at hboot screen,youll see that it is locked. once you unlock it,it is unlocked(obviously :p).

once you relock it,it is relocked. never again will it simply say locked as it does now. once youve unlocked,anyone at vzw or htc can check your hboot screen and see that you have at some point unlocked your bootloader. wether or not they will,and it will matter,is hard to say.

i know reading htc devs directions and the various guides are a little confusing. however, break it down into its basic steps,and its not as overwhelming,none of the steps are really that hard once you jump in a do them:

1)unlock bootloader
2)flash a recovery(temp or permanent)
3)flash superuser in recovery

if being stock locked and having a factory warranty is important to you,may want to hold off on rooting. if you have 3rd party insurance and decide that the benefits are worth risking the factory warranty(not saying it will. just that i cant say it wont) then read thru the noob friendly guide and post up if you have further questions :)

Here is my knowledge of rooting.

I came from an iphone which was jailbreaking and was very simple. Also very easy to reverse for warranty issues. I bought a Droid Bionic which sucked. Had tons of issues and was glitchy so I decided to root and mess around with some custom ROMs. I was always able to "unroot" before I sent it back during all of my stupid warranty exchanges. Eventually, they sent me a Droid Razr which was just as easy to root. Literally download a zip file....plugged in my phone and it rooted. There were like 2 ROMs for the Razr for some reason and no ICS ROMs. After another call in to VZW, they sent me a HTC Rez today (with the beats btw). I started checking the root stuff on this and found a ton of ROMs. I guess the HTC devs are pretty beast compared to the moto devs.

Im not sure what "flashing" is or what it accomplishes. Im also not sure what unlocking the bootloader does since I was able to root and install a rom on my Bionic. I am a complete rookie at all this and I have only been able to root and install that ROM based on step by step instructions.

Im pretty much stuck with my Rez regardless now. If it has the data drops the other ones had, they arent going to send me anything else. They refused to send me the Nexus this week so I guess this is it. Im not too worried about the warranty now, just kind of makes you rest a little easier.

Anyway, anything you can tell me about the bootloader and installing these ROMs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
So I got all the way to where I start up in fastboot. I had done everything leading up to that step but for some reason, when I opened my command prompt.....it would not find my platform tools folder. I know I installed it correctly. When I open SDK manager, it shows them as installed just like the picture on the tutorial. It had the 3 things you needed but my prompt wouldnt find them. I dont know what I did incorrectly. Sigh

it utilizes htcdev(no way around it) but i try and explin the steps and there are some you can omit. there is also a download that contains the adb/fastboot utilities you need so you dont have to follow htc's somewhat confusing directions ;)
 
I was able to easily enough follow the HTCdev unlock procedure, and then your guide Scotty. The only place i got stuck, is when i was ready to boot the phone into fastboot for flashing recovery, i didn't realize, nor did i read it anywhere, that the phone must be booted normally before it can be recognized as a fastboot device. That one piece of the puzzle had me scratching my head for about an hour before i just tried it. I was trying it from the fastboot menu and it would not work.

All is well. Unlocked and rooted. Thanks Scotty!
