THIS DECREASED my BATTERY DRAIN

Upon receiving my device yesterday. I let it charge to full then proceeded to play with it, while still on the charger. Today I had to run some errands however I decided to take the portable charger with me. within 90 minutes i was down to 1 green bar..WTF,

I went to a local Verizon store and very nicely and jokingly ask for the expert on the android OS. I ran into a previous blackberry and current droid user. I explained that i know there are things running in the background (services, and apps that I don't need). But i don't want to stop the necessary services that HTC and android OS needs to remain running.

I showed him, I stopped Gtalk and maybe one other services. I then downloaded Advanced Task Killer. I saw 15 apps running in the background..DAMNM!!!. I closed all of them , the phone will open what it need or what you use. After that , I more than double the use of the batteries. I love the phone , but I really feel alot better about the better drain. I hope this helps. I am now using live wall paper, playing with it alot more
 
Gtalk is just for chatting right? If so, I think I will turn it off on my phone tomorrow as I have no use for it. Thanks.
 
I downloaded advanced task killer right off the bat and my battery life hasn't been very good regardless. I just took it off the charger for the 2nd time about 2 hours ago and I'm already down to 80%... :eek:

I realize this is only the 2nd charge but I'm hoping it gets better.
 
I am a converted former believer in task killers. If you feel they help, then awesome - but I find I am better off without them.
 
Keeping a task killer on hand can be useful for stalled apps, such as a frozen browser (rare) or an app that you can't refresh data for any other way (games in particular), but using 'automated' ones is a bad idea.
 
The OS will handle the memory the best as it knows where it needs to relocate necessary RAM/power/etc. I would personally stay away from task killers.

This is how I feel as well after battling thoughts on my Eris of whether to use one or not. Truthfully I say to you "I do not think they are needed at all" imo:)

If they were needed, I would think HTC would put a stock one on for us to use. Considering that the majority of the people who use the phone arn't as fluent in technology as those on this forum.
 
I agree that a task killer should not be need. However the problem with this being:

I just came back to this thread. I would beleieve the fact that the os will do its own throttle back, but if you can see that when i indeed turn off some services and closed all my apps my battery drained dropped substantially. Just trying to look at options, and I'm very happy with the results from what i posted...
 
i stopped the friend stream app because i thought it was draining my extended seidio battery in excess. the drain seems to have stopped a little. i believe there is a way to stop the apps from polling the system frequently.

I'd love to read some on this to backup this claim. Seems to me that there's a lot of "opinions" on this but not enough proof to claim its truthfulness. Not singling you out woop...just saying. Also in no way to insult you or anyone else. I'm just wondering where you people are getting these internal workings of the android os and htc hardware.

I don't really have any hard proof persay as the only ones that would honestly know whats going on underneath would be the Google developers that created the OS. Its really just a matter of opinion, and I personallly feel I've done enough research to make a founded decision on it.

I think the bottom line is how it effects battery. Regardless of what it's doing in the background, or how Android handles running apps, does it help the battery or not? As mentioned, there are a lot of theories in this thread. Even with the developers' information, there is no hard evidence that using a task killer is better or worse on battery life.

I think we need to see a side by side comparison of two similarly setup phones, one that uses a task killer and one that does not. Then see how it effected battery life.
 
It's been 16 hours and I still have 30%.

This is after my FIRST charge cycle AND I have been using internet, youtube, texting, and phone tweaking.

It will only get better and I don't even have TaskKiller or an Extended battery yet. I'm VERY happy!

Well I have been using the phone for well over a month and have dealt with the battery drainage issue and have found a few things that help. Task killer? I say yes. When you have GPS applications going on they drain the battery like Gmaps or Trapster. I have found that Taskpanel is the best. You can set it up to ignor applications and kill applications with the phone goes idol. One other tool that has been very helpful is an application in Beta called tasker. T

This application is a must. Turn on things when you get to a location. Turn on Wifi, turn off GPS when you are at home...... The Best! Way better than Local. This application is a battery saver.

The last thing that kills your battery is Location. GPS yes but the bigger one is Using the Network for location. I have turned it off and my battery makes it all day.

Just my 2 Cents and I have had a lot of time to play with it.
 
after letting the battery get below 14% and fully charging it,it was below that again only 13 hours later,and 8 of those hours I was sleeping..hope it gets better or ill need a way bigger battery..i've found task killer helps battery life a bit, but I'm a newb with droids, so....

How do you go about turning off the various location settings?
