THIS DECREASED my BATTERY DRAIN

I use OSMonitor... its an Android TaskManager with an option for a CPU monitor in the notification bar. You can watch real-time how much load your putting on the system and deal with it then.

Its saved me a few times with bad apps... I installed one apps and the CPU screamed at 100% until I uninstalled it!

Its got a simple task killer in it too (for those bad emergencies) (=

Has anyone figured out how to change the send and receive schedule to manual instead of push? This would really help battery life but I can't seem to find the option on the Incredible. All other Android phones I have had could be changed.

This is regarding Gmail, the regular mail has the option but not the gmail.

I keep reading conflicting opinions on whether or not task killers help or hurt the battery. I think I'm going to forgo it and see how my battery does over the next week. Like someone else mentioned, if HTC really felt like everyone needed a task killer, they would've included them on all their phones.

I too agree that killing Gtalk was a solution as was advanced task killer. I took it off charger at 4:45 a yesterday and was charging it again at 10a (4% left). Installed task killer and realized that apps I hadn't used since 5am were still running. Killed all and just let it start what it needs. A lot of stuff doesn't have a close/exit option so this is the only way i see to stop it when i'm done with it.

anyway. pulled it back off charger at noon and with ATK killing stuff when I was done with it the battery lasted until I went to bed at 10p. (38% @ 10p).

Also there is a built in service killer, under settings -> Applications -> Running Services.

after letting the battery get below 14% and fully charging it,it was below that again only 13 hours later, and 8 of those hours I was sleeping..hope it gets better or ill need a way bigger battery..i've found task killer helps battery life a bit, but I'm a newb with droids, so....
You have some app or something else eating your battery. I went to bed last night with battery at 50% and when I woke 7 hours later it was at 47%. I did not have gps, wifi, or bluetooth on but did have 3G on.

I have Advanced Task Manager (prefer it over ATK) but I have not been killing all apps. When I look at apps running with ATM there are usually 12 - 18 apps running.

There actually is a basic task killer integrated into the OS:

menu>settings>applications>running services

I've already seen this before but I don't understand what each process is? What if it is vital to the phone and it should NOT be turned off?

For example:

HTC Message Uploader/Upload Messag Service - the heck is this?

Messages - TransactionService - hmm?

Sync Service - why would this be on? I have the Power Control widget and I have the sync unactivated?

Touch Input - ???

Calendar - Obex Service - Is this just my widget?

Thanks in advance and +Thanks

I simply plug the phone up when I go to bed (around 10:30pm) and take it off when I get up (~5:45am). I am good to go all day. I got the 14% warning about 5 minutes before going to bed last night. I use the device throughout the day; send/receive about 50 or so sms messages, have Exchange push set to as item arrives, gmail set the same, Peep updates every 30 minutes, WeatherBug update 15 minutes and following me, use the browser sporadicly, make about an hours worth of calls, etc... I use the phone! No task killers, wifi on, 3g on, bluetooth on as needed. I have only had the Incredible since the 28th, but used this same pattern with the DROID since November with same results.

Just give the thing a few charge/discharge cycles and you should be good to go...

I'd like to figure this out too. Anyone?

If you guys switch to the HTC client and use IMAP for Gmail, you should be able to switch to manual instead of push...

HOWEVER, Push doesn't kill battery life, it preserves it. Pull drains it :-)

Well here's my attempt to clear up what some are calling theory. And I encourage anyone to correct me if I'm wrong so that we have the right information out there.

Battery drain by applications is caused by applications using CPU cycles. An event driven application that is not doing anything (like your browser provided theres nothing animated on the page) uses no CPU cycles whether its in the foreground or background. This is true on any OS including Android. The application only uses cycles when its responding to your input and since you can't tell it to do anything in the background it doesn't drain any battery by being there. A task killer serves no purpose here.

Now some applications are services like music players that DO use cpu cycles in the background and will drain battery. The question here is do you need that service. If its something you or the Android system needs to be running then you really can't or should not close it and a task killer serve no purpose here either.

The only other time a task killer is going to be useful to the end user to save battery is if an app in the background for some reason has gotten itself into a situation where it is constantly using CPU cycles when it shouldn't. THEN you should be able to kill that app.

So in a nutshell the only way a task manager can help you with battery life is in controlling services that are not idle in the background. But if the services are not idle then you most likely need them unless there has been an error in an application and you can't/shouldn't kill them anyway. And Android throttles these services so that they aren't going buck wild with the battery. This is based on basic computer science knowledge so I really don't think there going be anything all that specific to Android to change it. I think its coming more to the forefront because of the way Steve Jobs had to try and justify their wait to do multi-tasking. He had to try and make it look like they had done something special to conserve battery life when in actuality they've done nothing new.

Also heres a link to an article about this on the Android developers blog.

Multitasking the Android Way

I have always had TasKiller on my phone but I only use about once or twice a month. I mainly had it on my Eris because sometimes I would just try to do too much and the phone would completely lock up so I would do a close all but rarely. I installed it on my Incredible to see what kind of memory it would have Under Full Load the Incredible still has 100-120megs Eris would have 22-28megs and completely Fresh it's over 200megs where the eris would be 90-100.. I'm such a phone nerd haha awesome

But in the long run I really don't think this phone needs it, and even on the Eris not really necessary. Some people will get anal about always having the max memory available ( I know Igot like this when I first strted with my Eris.
In all actuality Android 2.1 does a great job of memory managment when it needs memory it will close a program it doesn't need.

OS Manger says I only have 253,952K for /system. Now I would think that would be RAM... Does anyone else's show this?

Edit: Nevermind, I think I've got it.

/system is the actual OS
/data is installed programs? (it says 765,992 total though...)

I took my phone off the charger this morning shortly before 8:00 and it's already down to 75%. I have only listened to Pandora for ~15 min. and sent a few messages. I have internet, thick buttons, facebook, gmail and advanced task killer running...everything else turned off...

Ahh...perhaps I was using advanced task killer wrong and thought that whatever I unchecked would be "killed"...apparently that's not the case...or so it seems...

I totally disagree with the people above trashing on task killers. I think it works great. I just don't leave it running in the background, I kill it along with any other programs I want shut down. I just occasionally open the Advanced Task Killer up and kill the selected programs including the Task Killer. The great part is the task killer remembers which programs you like to kill and which you like to remain running and will open up each time with the proper programs selected or deselected based on your previous use of the task killer program.

So, while I agree that letting a task killer run in the background isn't really a good idea, you would be amazed at how many things are running in the background after messing with your phone for a little while. Just pop the task killer open and kill everything you don't need.:)

I think mine is a simple question: How do I turn off the phone? By that I mean use the Inc. with the phone/GPS/WiFi off.

In Settings go to Wireless/Networks and check on Airplane mode. There is also a widget for this which I have set up so I can turn it on when I'm on the subway.

Actually instead of using (menu>settings>applications>running services).. right above that...

(menu>settings>applications>manage applications).. if you know you recently used AIM, Pandora, GTalk.. just click on the program.. and scroll down you will see a force stop option.. problem solved.

I'd be willing to bet that this is caused by 75% brand new batteries and 25% incorrectly configured apps or apps with compatibility issues with the Incredible
