This dreaded Wifi Error is KILLING ME!!

RyanTFE

Newbie
I have the HTC Inspire 4g and haven't used it in about a year. It sat on a shelf and waited for me to come back to it. Well i turned it on was going to update it via wifi. I tried turning it on and it would say "turning on..." after a few seconds I get the "error." I do not have cell service until I get the sim card from straight talk and I can't connect via wifi so I really just have a phone that doesn't do squat at the moment. I have tried all remedies except that they all require a connection of some sort to make an attempt to fix this... The only one I tried successfully that didn't work was clearing the cach via the boot screen menus. It did not work. I tried the *#*#526 thing as well but it just deletes the number after I add the last character. I just updated to the latest software via HTC's website... Don't ask me if I'm rooted or flashed or whatever, I don't understand any of that mumbo jumbo except I think I did root it when I first got it but it has since been been reset to factory settings and it deleted everything when I updated it....

Here's my info:

Android Version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense Version: 3.0
Software Number: 3.20.502.52 710RD
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.10-ga375925
htc-kernal@u1800-build-144 #1

Hopefully thats all you need. Thanks for ANY HELP!! It is greatly appreciated!!

Hello, RyanTFE!

I don't have any info regarding your phone issue but I see you found the forum to post your question in. Hopefully someone will come along and help get you straight.

I did want to welcome you to AF, though, and thank you for joining! :)

Good luck with your phone!

Thanks... I have a feeling I'm not going to get any help and that I blew $80 to get its screen fixed for nothing. I suppose I'll know for sure when my SIM card arrives.

Well, I hope that is not the case. Just wondering if you could have the place that did the repair take a look at it again, see if they left a connection off or loose.

I had that happen to me once after a repair.

When my old Coby Kyros did that I just turned off and back on until it worked again. Also turning off wifi security seemed to help. For some reason none of my Android devices play well with WPA security.

Let me guess, it says 'authenticating' then 'connecting' then either 'getting IP Address' and, after a long pause, says 'error' or 'disconnected'

I will probably have to have them check it out. The wifi wasn't working before I took it in for repair either so I don't think it's their fault. I think HTC screwed by putting a radio antenna on the battery cover. Dumbest move ever. I have seen this problem all over the internet and not a single cure for it unless you dig into the depths of the phone which as a paying customer I SHOULD NOT have to do and I can't because I don't understand any of it.

Not sure how or where to find those options... Most of the stuff under the Wireless menu in settings is greyed out...

Got it, I'll give it a shot... but would that really affect the matter of the wifi on the phone itself being able to turn on???

I can see where that might affect, effect??? the ability to make a connection, but not it turning on... :(

I guess i missed that too.

All I know is I got a rooted Android media player that does the same thing until I turn wifi security off in the router. Other than that factory reset is all I got

Factory reset was the first thing I did... that didn't do anything... I'll try the router settings and see... Never should have broken the iPhone I guess. Unbelievable how much of a pain in the ass this has become... Apple makes it so simple.

I also remember another here say their GPS stopped working when they deactivated their phone so perhaps the two are related for some weird reason?

Are you saying I should just disable the password for my router and see if it works? As for creating a static IP i haven't the first clue how to do so
