This is not really another battery thread.

After being stuck with infuriating symbian phones for the last few years i decided i needed a change, for the last 3 weeks i have been the proud owner of a DHD but just like most i find the battery beyond shite, i am a builder and as such make and recieve a few calls and txts throughout the day and have been starting to worry that if i get a few more calls in a day that my battery will be flat, as it is i come home with less than 20%, i have done all the usb debugging/remove hungry apps ect but it still isn't enough to fill me with confidence, this moves me on to what i wanted to know, i have ordered a New Trent Extreme Pack IMP1000 Apple iPad Battery Pack - iPhone Battery Extender IMP1000 for a grand total of 69 hard earned English pounds, i just wondered if anyone has had any experience with this product or one like it?

Thanks
Carl.

Have you conditioned the battery?

I saw a big improvement after I did it. Follow these instructions if you haven’t done so already:

1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more
2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour
3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well.

I did see on this forum that people had done that but it seemed to work for some but not for others, do you know if its still worth a try even though my battery is likely to be on its 30/40th charge?

Defiantly mate, mine was on around charge 20 when I did it and it worked for me.

There's never a harm trying it. Worked for me as well.

I've had the DHD since the end of October and got into a habit of having 3G and wifi on all the time and charging it every night. Also having it on charge when in the car. However, I've been at home most of the last week or so and have a PC for web browsing, email etc so I thought I'd see what effect turning off 3G and wifi would be. Well, with just some calls and texts the phone lasted 3 days before needing a charge.

Yes, I know. Without 3G and wifi it's not really a (very) smart phone, but that's not the point. The point is, if you just need it to make calls/send texts during the day then turning off wifi and 3G makes an enormous difference.

3G off - Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Network (un-tick)
Wifi off: Settings > Wireless and Networks > Wi-Fi (un-tick)

I'm sure as a builder that you can't very easily lay blocks and surf the net on your DHD .... :D

I do have BT on all the time as I have a headset I use at home and it connects to the car stereo when out. I also have the screen dimmed when on (50 or 25%).

HTH.

there's 2 sets of widgets that come on the phone that ppl seem to overlook, one of them (which i put on the main screen) has a 3g icon, u click it and it disables the 3g (i only turn this on to update stuff, and browse, don't see a need to have it on all the time) it also has another widget which gives you gps, wifi, bluetooth and screen brightness (with 3 settings)

Between these 2 sets of widgets i can make my phone last for a good few days... I get about 4-5 hours on psx4droid before battery starts complaining, which is pretty good imo for something graphic intensive.

I've never conditioned my battery but i'm sure at some stage during my charge cycles that has happened... I was under the impression that newer batteries didn't need such treatment? They don't have the memory that some older batteries have, my battery life hasn't really changed much since i got it mind you

I use green power free, it turns off data/wifi when the screen is off. Really helped my battery life.

Also go into settings > applications > development > usb debugging ON - this stops a process that hogs cpu and eats battery life.

I swear by the Veho pebble! It has revolutionised my DHD use. 8 hours of Angry birds with GPS and 3G on and still plenty of juice left.

Go to Settings>About phone>Battery>Battery use>Cell standby if this is over 20% or so then you must switch to GSM only if you wish to preserve your battery life.

This piece of advice is the biggest single battery saver if you are in an area with poor coverage.

Secondly, the phone is set at startup to automatically run and auto synch lots of apps that you may never ever wish to use (news/weather/stocks) and you can manually disable synch with about 10 mins of tinkering in the settings (or by simply going into Settings>Accounts & synch and unchecking auto synch). Play around. Take control of the phone.

Don't install a Task Killer.

And finally, do the conditioning raindance if you must but be aware that it is a waste of your time.

I think there could be some truth to the "Raindance" As seen in this article "Charging lithium-ion batteries" it says

"Some chargers claim to fast-charge a lithium-ion battery in one hour or less. Such a charger eliminates stage 2 and goes directly to 'ready' once the voltage threshold is reached at the end of stage 1. The charge level at this point is about 70%. The topping charge typically takes twice as long as the initial charge."

So maybe the raindance will reset the charging cycle and allow for the battery to be fully charged.

I use this and airplane sceduler to put the phone into airplane mode at night, and i now get 3x as long from my battery. I dont think we should have to do this, but it saves me from running my battery down in under 24 hours with light use as it did before.

Ok so i got my Newtrent extreme battery pack, all i can say is WOW, if you are a heavy user then you will find this thing great, i fully charged the unit and have now topped my phone up 3x when its been below 15% and the unit is still showing a full charge, it also seems to charge just as quick as the mains charger. I think this thing will really show its worth when i'm out and about and using the sat nav as i found out n a recent trip to london on foot that an hour of sat nav and 10 mins of angry birds is about all my hd battery could take, with this box of juice i dont think i'm going to have anymore battery managment issues.
