Thunderbolt... No tether?

I was poking around the vzw website tonight to see about plans and things when I upgrade from the droid X to the htc Thunderbolt, and I noticed my plan dropped $20 a month in price, so I started snooping around... I found out that my tethering was listed as "we had to remove this because it is not compatible with your new phone." Does anyone know what's up with that? I tether a bit too much to lose that option. :confused:
 
Great excuse to root your phone and download wifi tether; save money and tell Verizon to stick it.
 
Wow, that is so lame. I thought the TB guys were getting tethering for the first month for free on their phones. That makes no sense if they don't even offer tethering. Especially since I don't have 4g in my area yet anyway, so it would still be 3g tethering.

And yes, I've always had rooted phones, so I don't actually need an excuse to root. My OG droid was rooted 2 days after I got it, and my droid x was rooted before I left the store. (I rooted it while they were finishing the paperwork.)
 
I seem to remember that thing about a free month tethering for Thunderbolt now that you mentioned it. Maybe LTE has a different plan altogether that your old G3 tether plan that you have to upgrade to. I'd call Verizon customer service and ask them about it.
 
I spoke with vzw when I got out of work today. The feature is removed because they have a promotion... free wifi tether until June 16. The option can be added in through customer care after the promo is over.

Seems idiotic to me, since if I purchase the phone today, it won't arrive until monday, June 13th anyway. 3 days free and then I have to re-add it? Really?

Maybe, it was supposed to end on May 15th and they extended it. They haven't come out with official pricing for the LTE phones' tethering plan so they may just extend it again. I've heard everything from staying with $20 for 2 GB to $29.99 extra for unlimited tethering. Either way, just enjoy the freeness until the official word comes down.
 
The free Mobile Hotspot promotion ends July 7th, 2011. On July7th, users will receive a message advising of a new feature plan available. We do not have pricing information on the 4G Mobile Hotspot feature at this time.
