thunderbolt random reboot fix

I've noticed after the OTA update, I have generally have less free memory with no real change in my usage pattern. I want to say prior to the update, I usually sat with around ~180 mb free and now after the update, I'm usually around 120-130 mb free. Could there be a memory leak somewhere, the reboots then resulting from the system running low on memory, and glitching/rebooting on that?

I have 248 mb of free memory. I have noticed the auto correct when typing works sometimes and then sometimes it won't work

Mine is doing the same thing, random reboots off and on. My friend bought his a week after mine and his is worse! I switched from the Incredible for the same thing. I went thru 10 refurbed Incredibles before Verizon finally agreed to do me a "favor" and give me an early upgrade to the TB. I hope I'm not going to have to go thru the same thing for this!

Well after 3 replacements in less than a week and me haven a toilet mouth they sent me a brand new one and well presto I have had no issues it

I spoke with a cs rep yesterday to get my random reboot issue fixed on my TB but currently they have no fix but they are now are officially recognizing that it is a problem and are currently working with HTC for a fix.
HTC, Verizon Working on Fix for ThunderBolt Random Reboots

Except my husband and I just left a VZ store, where another customer was there with the same problem. The three of us were told that there is nothing to do but wait for another update. The service tech claimed that there was nothing in their "alerts" about the problem...which I find interesting if VZ and HTC recognize and are working on the problem. More VZ BS...

That's what pisses me off the most.... Don't lie to me... There's an obvious problem, admit it.

CALLED Verizon and told them about my random reboot with update. Was told to master reset phone and don't download all apps from market all at once download them one by one and pin point which app is causing this problem. The update isn't working well with certain apps. I only downloaded the t9 keyboard so far no reboots. Astro file works ok with new update.

Please share which apps have caused you problems with this update on thunderbolt. Thanks gang

I have a hunch it is My Verizion because you have to download it, it doesn't even work with thunderbolt ( Verizion's MOST EXPENSIVE phone), and it is VERY hard to uninstall on the HTC Thunderbolt. I have also read that it is a glitch from Facebook or Possibly from the Twitter App "Tweet". I have googled it many times and almost always find something on the My Verizion app. I think that is your most likly problem as it is mine.

My phone just reboot lol. So what are we suppose to do about this?

Blow it the F*** up because it is a horrible device from minimum 4g area to horrible battery life, constant freezing on 3g, Damn reboots every 5 seconds. Its B.S. It can go blow up along with Verizion and their unhelpful Store People.

Quick fix, my phone rebooted 6 times yesterday, i found that if I turn off the LTE the restart stopped, I used LTE OnOff and set it to CDMA (auto) PRL and the restarts stopped :-)

thanks for the suggestion. My only problem with that idea is that I live over 100 miles from LTE so I have had my LTE turned off since long before the update. I have my radio set to "CDMA auto (PRL)"

I do not seem to be getting as many random reboots as some others are posting but I am getting them. It happened during an important call the other day, interferes with email reception - often emails stop being received on phone after a random-reboot until I manually restart the phone. I also notice that the Thunderbolt sound does not play when it random-reboots so I often do not even know it happened. Subsequently, I look at my phone to see if I missed any notifications and see none (scroll-down of the notifications bar reveals no recent apps either - this is the final confirmation of the random-reboot).

It is making the phone unusable and if VZW does not come up with a fix soon, they are going to have to let me out of my contract or find an alternate satisfactory phone. As of now, I am beginning to consider this a breach of the contract. A new replacement TB will have the update on it and even if refurbs do not, I would not accept a refurb replacement for my new phone that was working fine (no random-reboots) before the update. I suspect TB owners may well be starting to qualify for a class-action. We pay a lot of money for these phones & contracts, especially those of us who actually bought from VZW - interesting that they punish their own customers by charging us more for the phone that we would pay if we went to Amazon. One would think VZW has the obligation to sell us phones that actually work correctly.

Glad to hear you are not suffering from the problem SirVilhelm. My guess is that by rooting, you have deleted files which may be contributing to the random reboot. Of course, if you have not downloaded the update - well, as I posted - I (and others) did not have the problem prior to the update.

While rooting may be a solution to the random-reboot issue, it also voids the warranty and insurance. I do not find it reasonable to have to void the warranty as a way to fix a problem that VZW and HTC created. And, while it may fix the reboot issues, and allow other customization (like getting rid of the overwhelming and offensive bloatware), if I have any other problems with the phone - I'd have no warranty.

VZW may have "The Network" but if the flagship phone becomes unreliable - "The Network" becomes way less comparatively valuable.

^I see what you're saying and while rooting does technically void the warranty rooting is not permanent. You can always go back to stock to get support.

But I think you're right that there is an app, probably one of the bloatware apps that is causing the reboot. I do not think it is 4G as others have guessed.

VZW is finally offering me a replacement but its a refurb. Should I fight it or is it a lost cause?

Personally, I would not accept a refurb replacement as a solution to fix a problem they caused. I am going to wait a bit longer to give them a chance to come out with a "fix" as some of my above posted links seem to indicate may be coming.

As for your situation, I guess it depends on 2 things: 1) if your phone is rebooting so often so as to make it unusable and 2) does the replacement/refurb have the new update loaded. If you cannot use your existing phone, you sort of have to make a decision. If the replacement/refurb has the new "update" it will likely have the random reboots. No way to be sure unless you take it and see what happens.

Personally, I am not thrilled with the current alternative 4.3" phones. So, I am not sure what I will do. If a fix is not out soon, I may demand to be let out of contract and push for a refund of purchase price. Don't know if I will get it but I have been a VZE customer for over 8 years and now under a contract with a phone that is unreliable, faulty, unfixable and (as far as I am concerned) a breach of the contract on their part. I'd rather they come out with a fix (and I suspect if they would dump the bloatware - the problem would go away; see above posts). I like the phone and the network but paying top dollar for the Flagship phone that is unreliable and malfunctions...

I could try to follow the rooting instructions but I am not savvy that way, it voids the warranty and I am not confident I could put it back to specs if I ever had a warranty claim. As SirVilhelm posted, rooting (and dumping all the bloatware) probably eliminates the random reboot problem but I find that an equally unsatisfying solution.

Please let us know what you decide, how they respond and how it works out for you.

Seeing things like this really get under my skin also. After being a customer in perfect standing for almost a decade, being an early adopter and buying "Flagship" phones from VZW direct on day one, seeing the same phone selling thru Amazon for way less, struggling with their "updates" which make the phone unreliable and malfunctioning and then to see this 2 months after we purchase: Deal Alert: HTC Thunderbolt for $99 Until June 12! AndroidGuys

I wonder why they think they deserve our business and customer loyalty.
