Root Thunderbolt Root/Unroot Thread

So I was having this phone call problem, where my voice would cut in and out, and at first I thought it was an AOSP bug, but nobody else seemed to be having that bug. So I swapped to a couple of different Sense roms, including the rooted-stock 605.9 rom, and the problem if anything got worse. So I called customer service, and they are sending me a new Bolt.

I was a little nervous about unrooting, because it looked more complicated than rooting.
But I followed the directions on the first post of this thread, and all went perfectly.
The whole process only took about 20 minutes, and now I am completely stock again. My new bolt will be in the mail either tomorrow or the next day, and I can return this phone with confidence. Thank you for this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So it looks like I'll be using this awesome unroot/return to stock method again, because the replacement TBolt has the same problem, so Verizon is going to send me yet another new TBolt to see if that takes care of it. My hopes aren't very high. Don't get me wrong I really like the TBolt in general, and I really hope I can get one that doesn't have this annoying problem. But 2 in a row so far have had it. I am not terribly optimistic that this third one won't have it as well. Maybe if the third one has it, they will let me swap for a different model. I have done this in the past. Maybe a Rezound.

The problem if anyone is interested is that when I make a call or recieve one, about 75% of the time the person on the other end of the call can't hear me. I can hear them perfectly, but they can't hear me at all. I can turn on speakerphone and then turn it back off and that will fix the problem for the duration of that phone call, but then the next call the problem happens again. And it has done it completely stock and also rooted with various roms.

And another successful unroot and return to stock.

Thanks again!

First off, I understand that my problem is the result of my poor searching skills. I appreciate any help. Now, I unrooted using the MR1 firmware at (thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thundebolt-hacking-guides/2849-how-restore-stock-rooted-non-rooted-users.html). I flashed the 1.04 HBoot. I received the GB OTA. I need to return the device and need to get 1.05 on there. Can I just flash the 1.05 HBoot as a PG05IMG.zip over the 1.04 S-ON without rooting and then unrooting? I'm having intermittent success with adb, so I would be thrilled if this is as easy as flashing the 1.05. Thanks!

no,you cannot. your s-on hboot will not let you flash the unsigned-by-htc 1.05 hboot file. the only way to get it would be to flash a whole RUU that contains it

i would not worry about it. phones that legitimately OTAed still have the 1.04 hboot. i have a couple of friends with TBs,neither actually have the 1.05. everytime i have forced my phone to OTA,it never replaces the hboot.

so,you technically are on the right hboot for someone who hasnt run an RUU ;)

I would prefer you ask your questions here,as you prolly aren't the only one to have them. Here on the forum everyone can benefit from the discussion :)

Truth. This unit shipped w/ 1.05 and 2.11.605.9 on it, so I really would like to get back to that before sending it in. Is there a RUU that I could run S-ON that would get me there? The software is currently 2.11.605.9, just a version down on the HBoot

i *think* the md5 for PG05IMGmr4.zip is 013cbdd3a9b28bc894631008fa2148e2 but due to the vaugness of the name,id have to download to be sure.

for RUU_Mecha_GINGERBREAD_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.11.605.9_Radio_0.01.78.0916w_3_NV_8K_1.41_9K_1.64_release_226879_signed.exe the md5 is 8caede1a8ce2bd9ee2b7379c7d069b81

So I dropped my phone & got an insurance replacement that came with 2.11.605.5, but Verizon snuck in the OTA to 605.9 & now revolutionary won't work. I tried downgrading to 605.5, but my bootloader stays *** Locked ***

Is there any way I can get the bootloader unlocked so I can use revolutionary?

Revolutionary only gets to the point of 'waiting for device'

was the downgrade successful? as long as you are on 2.11.605.5 revolutionary will work, the 1.05.0000 hboot is supported.

you do NOT need for your 1.05 hboot to say unlocked, nor do you need to downgrade all the way to 1.04.0000.

as long as youre on 2.11.605.5 revolutionary will work just fine :)

"waiting for device" means that you either dont have usb debugging checked on,or you have a driver issue. try uninstalling htc sync and any other programs that have the ability to interact with your htc phone, and install the drivers again. try different usb cables in different ports. sometimes a PC reboot helps.

Alright so I figured out my problem & it was my driver. When my phone was in it only showed up as Android adb interface in the hardware manager. But now I am getting hung up on waiting for fastboot... I never had any problems before :(

So I recieved my warranty replacement yesterday (my second warranty replacement, but who's counting). And it came with the 1.05 bootloader and the 605.9 firmware. I downloaded the 605.5 RUU, and flashed it from hboot. The flash was successful. But then when I tried to run Revolutionary (which I have successfully done twice before on the two previous thunderbolts) it tells my my beta key is not valid. I tried it about 5 times, and each time made sure I entered the serial number into the key generator correctly, and then entered the key correctly.

Any ideas why it would tell me my key is invalid?
And is there a non-beta version of the revolutionary tool out yet that doesn't require a beta key?

Thanks!

tried updating the drivers with the phone in fastboot? sounds like you still have a driver issue :(

no non-beta yet.

are you using your old beta key,or did you get a new one? remember the beta key is generated based on your serial number, and not interchangable to different phones

I got a new one for this serial number.
I even got it several times to make sure it was right.
I also even downloaded the tool again, thinking maybe the code key were specific to the actual downloaded tool. But so far no good.

Thanks for the quick reply by the way. I didn't think anyone would be up this early. lol
I am at work, which is the only reason I'm up this early.

lol yup i was on my way to work as well. im not real sure why the beta key wouldnt be accepted,if you entered your serial number and hboot correctly.

might try pasting it,if youve been typing it... some folks have claimed that to work. its not obvious how to paste- click the little icon in the upper left corner. this should get you a menu. you want to edit, then paste.

other than that... try rebooting the pc,maybe try it on a different computer all together. i remember a thread where someone had similar prollems, ill see if i can find it.

I tried CTRL+V but it didn't work in the command prompt. I can try what you said. But to be honest, after the first "invalid beta key" message, I tried it several times again checking it 5 times in a row to make sure it was right before hitting enter. So I would be shocked if I typed either the serial incorrectly or the beta key. But I guess anything is possible. I may try that later.

As far as trying another computer, on my other computers that I have access to, I have installed the drivers linked on the Revolutionary website as instructed, and the tool never detected my phone. But on one laptop, I installed the HTC drivers, and that is the laptop that I've had to use to root and unroot my previous two thunderbolts, because it's the only one with working drivers installed, and I can't seem to uninstall the drivers on my other computers, in order to reinstall the HTC drivers. So that might not be an option.
But I mean, everything is working on my laptop. It's recognizing the phone, and giving me the correct serial number (I checked, and it is correct), and it only stops because of the invalid key. Which makes me think it's not the computer anyway. Like I said, I have even redownloaded the revolutionary tool a couple of times, to see if that matters, but so far it hasn't.

Last night while I was sleeping, my phone updated it'self back to 605.9 again. lol
It's not a big deal, because I've still got the 605.5 RUU on the SDcard, so flashing back again is easy. But just for kicks I am trying to just get used to using Sense, to see if I could just use that if I had no other choice. I could, I guess. Especially considering I am about 99% sure now that my two previous phones were fine, and it was the Rom I was using that was causing the phone call problems. The bloat is annoying. And the sense launcher is stupid, but I could always install another launcher app. There is really nothing (besides the bloat) that I hate about Sense that I can't replace with apps, without rooting.

I still want to know what's wrong with revolutionary, so if I change my mind later I'll be able to root. And I may just install the debloated, rooted 605.9 anyway. Who am I kidding. If I go to the trouble of rooting, I'll definitely be back on AOSP again. :-)

My thunderbolt had root
and it suffered bootloop yesterday due to some reason after flashing dasBAMF rom.

So I tried flashing 2.11.605.5 rooted ota PG05IMG from Android Police
and it totally went back to stock rom
I also realized I've lost root when I tried using apps for rooted phones only.
It was strange because I saw in the download thread saying it has root..

I tried flashing again on HBOOT and I found
there were no "LOCKED" text on the top. I believe that should be there if I don't have root.
Instead, it said "Revolutionary" on the top

So anyhow I found this thread, trying to gain root again.
When I ran the revolutionary program,
it came out said "Your device is already S-OFF"

Well, the apps I tried to run said I don't have root
and this program says I'm already rooted..

What should I do??
