Root thunderbolt rooting methods(updated 8-24-2011)

by "downgrader image" i mean the image from the alpharev website. looks like it will somehow unlock their permanent hboot.

gah! those guys on that thread are saying contradictory things

heres what i think you should do:

-make sure "bravo_downgrade.img" is in the desire folder

-adb devices,adb reboot bootloader,fastboot devices,then:
Code:
fastboot flash hboot bravo_downgrade.img
do that until you get an "ok"

-
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
(this will make the bootloader reboot itself. let me know what it says at this point)

-
Code:
fastboot erase cache

-run the ruu of choice with the phone in fastboot. hopefully when the ruu is done,it will have overwrote your alpha rev.

sorry for my delay,i had long hours yesterday too :(

but from what they are saying on xda i think that should work :)

Thanks man =)
Il just follow what you say coz you have been right so far ^^ =)
Il try it when i come home from work in about 8 h =/
Gahh so wana be home today.

Take care!

------------------

Oh yeah just noticed one thing though.
You remember me saying im gona send it in for repairs? Well i never use the normal keybord instead i use the one with gosms so forgoten how the normal keybord looks like.
If my phone is from Sweden, is it right to use the RUU with wwe or should i use Europe?

this process of "Rooting " seems very complicated a beginner like me, but the video was very informative. What is the main benefit of "Rooting" ones Cell Phone?

Ability to remove bloatware or install custom version of the OS would be the main benefit IMO, or being able to install a custom kernel and overclock for better performance.

the question i would ask is this:

what do you want rooting to do?

is there something yould like to cahnge about your phone,or something youd like to improve?

if you are 100% happy with your device as-is,then rooting may not be of interest to you,and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that :)

Hi and sorry for a late reply but been swaammmpppeeeddd at work =( But finaly got one day off, yay.

wow, im at mirch with about 30 people and noone is answering a singel question in the main chat =/
dosent seem like this problem will be solev, so a new phone is what i need to get i gues =/

Or do you have any other ideas i can try scotty`? =(

After you did "reboot bootloader" what was the info at the top of the fastboot screen? Did it still say alpha rev? Did any of the numbers change?

hmmm. im sorry,im beginning to be fresh out of ideas. the way they talked on the xda thread, the downgrader image was an unprotected s-off hboot, that you should easily be able to overwrite with an ruu. if you got an OK after flashing it,i cannot imagine why its not being overwritten

there are only 2 other things i can think of. you can flash the downgrader image, then flash the stock hboot in fastboot. maybe that will work. if you try that id make sure you flash the matching ruu first.

the other thing you could try:
on alpharevs site, there is a PB99IMG_downgrade. you can try that. download it,rename "PB99IMG" and place on the root of your sd card. then boot into hboot. it will find the file, tell it yes to update, and see if it flashes. if it says "bypassed" then it didnt. if it says OK then hopefully it will let you overwrite it with something else. try rebooting, remove the PB99IMG,then boot back to hboot and see if its somethign else. or just try and flash your ruu again, and see if it overwrites it this time.

Hi again.

So when i try to apply the pb99img file after renaiming it to update.zip it just tells me the signature verification dident pass then aborted.

When i try to first flash alpharev and then the hboot from my ruu it tells me in command "bypassed" but on my phone it says cannot roll back hboot version

so i gues this is a lost battle =(

you do not rename "update.zip".

you just remove the "downgrade" and rename it to "PB99IMG"

your sd card MUST be formatted FAT32(if its not, reformat it)

place the PB99IMG on the root of your sd card

boot into hboot- select yes with the vol rocker to update after it finds and checks the file

it will either say "bootloader- OK" or "bootloader- bypassed" after it flashes.

see what happens if you try that :)

so... you get an "OK" to flashing the downgrader image, and then get "bypassed" when entering the command to flash the stock hboot?

sounds like this downgrader image is not working the way it is supposed to

try the PB99IMG install as i described above, and if you get"bypassed" there too ill go back on the xda thread and ask some more questions :)

edit: as an afterthot, maybe you need to reboot bootloader before attempting to flash the new hboot.
maybe try this:
-flash downgrader image and get "ok"
-fastboot reboot-bootloader
-fastboot erase cache
-then try and flash stock hboot :)

hmm now im realy happy.

Im back on stock hboot with s-on =)

But one thing bothers me.
I could not apply the ruu because the hboot was of wrong version.

My hboot now is

hboot - 0.93.0001
microp - 051d
radio- 5.11.05.27

Previous hboot were :

evolutionary
Bravo PVT4 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNW0101
RADIO-5.09.05.30_2
AUG 10 2010, 17:52:18

So numbers have changed. But why cant i install the ruu
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed

or

RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed

Dont make any sense to me =/

what is the exact error youre getting? phone boots and operates normally now correct?

you may just need to find an ruu that is newer than 2.29.405.5(higher version number)

my apologies,i should have made sure you flashed the ruu that matched that hboot before flashing it. :(

i think we got liftoff =)
Now it says alpharev unlock =)

Il try to flash the ruu now

oh... i just saw this :) did you get s-on by flashing the ruu,or by flashing the stock hboot in fastboot?

it may not be letting you flash the first ruu becasue it is older. it may not be letting you flash the second one because it is the same as what you have.

I got s-on by flashing the flash from alpharev and then the downgrade from alpharev.
Then i restarted hboot and alpharev had changed the name.

Then i tried to flash the ruu but that dident go.
The error code was what i stated above.
But il try to download a newer version and see where it takes me =)
Just need to sober up a bit :P
----------------

So tried to download diffrent ruus for my phone but apperantly my hboot is the wrong version =S
But when trying to do ota updating im getting "no updates avalible".

My version is 2.2 android.
Even after an factory reset / wipe cach im getting android 2.2.
so somehow it seems my phone is stuck at 2.2.

Befor when i did a factory reset i were back at..well dont remember the version but i had alot of updates to install.

Will this be anything htc will react upon when taking it back for service? Or what do they check when they look at it?

My problem report with htc would consist of
"problems with camera making android go into a force close of application (camera) state"
"user cant hear reciptian when calling out"
"user cant connect headphones/handsfree and make the phone register them as plugged in"

Do they only check that or do they check my hboot and so on to see that i did not tamper with the phone?

//A very happy T

What other ruus have yo tried? If you look in settings/about phone what is your build number and firmware number?

Oh hi,
Sry for the late reply, i thought i alredy replyed to you.

But the other ruus i tried is...darn dont remember the numbers.
But il try to download o couple now and se witch one is compatibel =).

My build and firmware is:

B= 2.29.405.5
F=CL293415 release-keys

think thats what my firmware is. Dident find a "your firmware is" topic in my phone =/

No prollem, that's the number I was lookin for.I think You'll need to find something higher/newer. What is the most current one for your phone? Have you tried to do OTA updates?

I'm not actually sure about your incorrect hboot error. I have only seen "main version higher" on the TB

i think im alredy at the highest possible because ota also says theres no more updates.

Strange.
Oh well, il just send in the phone as it is. Just gona make a factory reset and let em poak at it.
Whats the worst they can say anyway?!

Do they even care about version numbers on the hboot/android?

its my understanding that hes sending his phone to htc, they may look a lil harder at it. they may actually repair his device and return it.

if its a warranty thing, they may or may not care if youve altered the firmware(even if by a "legal" means by running an RUU) i honestly have no idea.

aasterix,if youre on the highest firmware, then that explains your errors. the s-on hboot will NOT let you go backwards in version numbers, only forward. so if this is the case, then i think that you are safe in sending it in :) hope they get it fixed up or get you a new one quick! :)

edit: after a quick search,i couldnt find anything newer, either. i think you are good to go :)

Then i realy have to thank you all and spcial thanks to you Dexter (yes now im calling you for what i always want to call you when i see that pic) for helping me.
Hopefully this will help someone els also.

Take care everyone =)
Beer on me! :)
