Time for me to be moving on???

DILands

Hey all - I'm wondering if it's "time". I absolutely love the phone - WHEN IT WORKS. I know for any number of folks, rooting is the answer - well I'm not going to root. Maybe someday I'll get the wherewith all to actually do it - doubtful - but - it's not something I want to do now.

The random reboots have returned, and that's bad enough. Now (for the 3rd time this week), I've stopped receiving texts - all other data is fine - can send texts no problem, just can not receive. The "fix" is to do a battery pull - until it happens again. The problem with the "fix" is that the battery life (even with the extended battery) was never what I would call "great". Random reboots suck juice - and, so will battery pulls.

I'm on the fence as to what to do - at this point - I'm more than 50% decided that it's time for a change. Np sure whether to give HTC another chance with the Rezound (a salesperson at a corporate store who knew that he wasn't getting a sale said that the Rezound is a much better phone - TBold was the first 4G LTE phone - and HTC worked out a lot of kinks). Then I see on this forum that there are reboot issues. . . Never had a Moto - considering the Razr - or waiting for the Nexus. Heck - at this point - I'm actually considering the fruit phone.

Any thought would be appreciated.

TIA!

DILands:

I completely get where you are coming from. You hung in there much longer than I would have --- Stock, that is. I, for one, needed better battery and more control of the phone (backups etc). After having it for a time, I did the Manual root method. It was very technical, in my opinion, but it worked and the Dev ROMs solved all my problems. I did have an "accident" with my phone a busted a piece, so I had to unroot, send it back and they sent me a new one.

All went well on the transfer of phones, but this time I used the "revolutionary" method to root. Man, that was so easy. Plus, there is a lot of help here if you get stuck. Going out on a limb here, why wouldn't you root? Warranty? Difficulty? You are going to switch phones as an alternative...so I say go for it! Once rooted, you are in backup heaven. There are several ROMs for you to choose from, depending on which 'style' you like, Sense or AOSP. I run both depending on my mood. I get around 16 hours of battery and I use my phone constantly...so its not a bogus value.

My sister was in your boat and I rooted for her a couple of months ago. Her quote to me on Friday, " I lovelovelovelove my phone."

If you are just plain old tired of it and want a "new cow" (for those of you that remember the movie Someone Like You), that's a different story.

Hope that helps!

My first question, is have you tried a full reset on the phone, or had it replaced yet? Sometimes, a replacement is all it takes to be better. The battery life on the bolt has always been subpar compared to most other smartphones, at least out of the box. I've got the Rezound battery in mine, which easily makes it through a 10 hour stretch with moderate use, with juice to spare. But there's no denying that it could be better. Also, yes, it was the first LTE phone, so naturally newer phones have the potential to be better, since they have had more time to fine tune things.

Time to step back though, ask yourself if it's worth the cost to upgrade (especially if you aren't eligible yet), and also what it is you like and don't about your Bolt. If it's only the texting issue (and subsequent worse battery life), you may find yourself satisfied by having it replaced if it works better. But, if there are other factors, and other "wow" factors to sway you to something new, then by all means, go for it.

There are always going to be glitches in phones. Some people will experience them, others won't. There's no way to guarantee a problem-free phone, but depending on what you're looking for in a new phone, and what you've experienced with your Bolt thus far...it's on your shoulders.

@Secondshot - I seriously think I have ADD - and a pretty low frustration threshold - don't think I have the patience to root - especially knowing that - if the phone goes back - that means unroot.

@CharlzO - money isn't an issue (well it is). I got it at Best Buy and got Black Tie protection - so - I can go that route. Get the retail back, and pay retail for another phone - and not mess with my upgrade date. I KNOW that I don't want to swap for another TBolt - if I have to do that - I'll use it as an opportunity to get something new. (I drive a 2003 Saturn, and will keep it until it totally dies - but would be a charter member for the "Phone of the Month Club" if there was one). However - I would consider a full reset.

Going to look that up now - assume that will work for a while - and hopefully fix it for good. I never did one before - but hey - it's not rooting - so, I'm all there.

Well I don't want you to go to the fruit phone. I've seen reports of reboots with the rezound (HTC FTW ) If you aren't a root users and don't mind having limited access to root then the razr may be a good choice. The nexus is pure android so it will require you to do any and all customization by yourself but is still not a bad choice IMO. If you love sense and can't use a phone without it then the rezound may be the way to go.

If your phone is not functioning to your satisfaction and you have done all you are willing to do to fix it then I agree with you it is time to move on.

I was definitely against rooting when I first got my phone - I truly liked the way it functioned and thought that rooting would cause more problems than not. Plus, the manual root was intimidating. Once the revolutionary root came, I was swayed. It was really easy. Installing roms is a piece of cake as well once you have done it. Backup, wipe three times, install, and poof, you have a new ROM. I'd rather have my Thunderbolt than any of the new phones, because the development is so far advanced at this point with rooting that I would hate to go through all the growing pains of a new phone.

Good luck with your decision!

OK - starting to succumb to peer pressure - especially with the Revolutionary Root". Root the phone - it walks, talks, and wets the bed!! LOL

Now - need to try to get a clue on ROMS!!

If you are going to root I suggest taking it one step at a time. Root first then worry about roms. There are plenty of roms to test out until you find the one you like the best ;)

Nope :D you can root and stay stock if you wish. I personally wouldn't but there are plenty of people who root only to remove bloatware they don't use.

As others have said, look at Revolutionary Root for thunderbolt..... its a one click root pretty much. 1 and done.

It is like when you were a young boy and didn't like to play with the girls. An know that your older you like can't live with out them... that is what I compare rooting an android based phone to. Go ahead and go buy another droid based phone and in a month you'll be like I dont like it no more. Rooting gives you the phone you want to have by making it what ya want. (Kinda like the movie weird science.) Just say I'd nut up and root it first. Then if you can tell me a rom like liquid gingerbread 3.2 running Shell3D on the T-Bolt isnt awesome then your better off getting one of those crackerjack fruit phones:p

Only problem w/ rooting is its like a gateway drug . Once you root, then play w/ roms, you are an addict, cause none of it is really that difficult as long as your thumbs work ok. And with all the different ROM options to try, your just constantly looking for that perfect high, or in this case, perfect blend of ROMS to suit your needs, but you realize you want pieces of this and that to blend together to make the perfect ROM but it doesn't really exist so you keep searching and trying different drugs...I mean ROMS.

In all seriousness, go for it. Just use that revolutionary video and pause the damn thing when it tells you to do something. It's very simple.
