Root Time to root my X10

So, I have decided I cannot go on without 2.2 on my X10. Too many little things not available to it in 2.1, and everyone tells me how much faster and smoother it will run in 2.2. But I have a few last minute questions:

1) If I root will I lose the "bloat" apps, or can I keep them? I NEED moxier because it is the only thing I can find that integrates my work email from the exchange server properly (it is after all work phone primarily so no email = brick for me) I would like to be able to pick and chose what I delete, I dont want to automatically lose that and the other stuff Rogers / Sony puts on there.

2) If I root, can I ever go back? If I decide I dont like it, is missing something I need, etc am I screwed or can I reverse the process?

3) I am assuming I need to first Root the phone, then install the custom (2.2 in this case) ROM to make it work? Is that all I need to do?

I would rather not do it, but Rogers blows and I dont want to wait for their "maybe" upgrade.

can you not flash 2.3 then get moxier from the market. im using wolfbreaks 2.3 and it shows up in the market. wife has standard 2.3 and it shows up for that one too. dont see the point of getting 2.2 when 2.3 is available

I can, but moxier was free wit the stock X10 software. It's $20 in the market. I would prefer to not pay for something I have already had for free. If I have to I probably will, but I would prefer not to.

Any other suggestions for an email program that will work well with an exchange server?

if you got a rooted 2.3 then you could dld it from the web, although im not condoning this lol

From what I have read. You lose Moxier.

If you want to update to any version after your current version, you will lose Moxier.

You can always downgrade from one version to an older one. But it's kind of a pain.

If you want 2.3 and want the phone rooted, you need to do things in the right order.

You need to root under 2.1 and then go through upgrading to 2.3 using the flashtool.

Awesome, thanks. I have one more silly question - do I have to root to flash a custom rom? I thought I did, but from some youtube videos I have watched it looks like I can flash a custom rom (which I assume is the version upgrade) without rooting. Is that correct? If it is, why would I even want to root?

i used flashtool to flash wolfbreaks 2.3 custom prerooted rom because it gives you access to the root files of the operating system(think thats the technical jargon lol) you can delete apps that are your providers bloatware (timescape etc). i used flashtool to get the generic 2.3 on my wifes phone (shes not bothered about rooting)

you can use things like app brain to back up your apps but i just write them down on a piece of paper then i can just decide which ones to clear out and what to redownload

if i remember correctly my sequence was i already had a custom 2.2, then i used flashtool to flash back to an unrooted 2.1 then flashed the generic 2.3(unrooted) from sony using seus or pc companion (cant remember which one). then after a few days i used flashtool to flash wolfbreaks custom prerooted rom

I had 2.1 rooted and wanted to go to 2.3. I flashed 2.3 on there and it wasn't rooted.

I needed to go back to 2.1....root....then install some of 2.3 using the flashtool. But that was before the preroot came out.

I can't work on a non rooted phone. There are some apps I use that need root access. I need to remove some stuff off the phone that I wouldn't be allowed to do using a non rooted phone.

Easiest way now, I guess is to upgrade to 2.3 generic....then root....then install the prerooted custom 2.3. Reason you need to upgrade to 2.3 first is so that you can install the newest baseband and Android version...

You can just root an official 2.3, I did that!
