Root Ting (Carrier)

kurrent

Newbie
Ting is a new carrier that uses sprint's services. It offers this phone and i want to know if i can use the sprint rooting resources on this forum. Anybody know if that's possible?

Here is a little background:

I am currently trying out Ting and I got the LG Marquee.

First what happened was I got an email from them stating that tethering would not work in its current config. I could either send it back for another phone or a refund, or when they finish the instructions for updates I could update it myself. So I opted to wait it out, but then I found this article: https://help.ting.com/entries/22268937-lg-marquee-hot-spot It shows how to "get around" the tethering problem for now.

So then I dug a little further for rooting and found that I was on the software version that broke the root (ZVC). Because when I got the phone it wanted to do an update and I didn't know any better so I went and did the update from zv9 to zvc. I found that you can roll back to software version ZV9 and do the root just fine. This is basically what I followed: http://androidforums.com/marquee-all-things-root/552289-root-your-updated-lg-marquee-phone-step-step.html

I believe any of their newer lg marquee's will have a different software on them to fix the tethering problem. Also mine is branded Boost Mobile. I hope this helps, so far Ting has been great and the Marquee seems very good for a "cheap" ($87) refurb!

Thanks

Thanks Willis for the fast reply! Have you ever experimented with custom roms? Would i be able to use the method for whichever carrier my phone is branded to? (sprint or boost)

Just today I installed the ctmod rom. It is nice, sleek, and, fast. But I believe it's based off of the zvc rom so in turn you cannot force roam. If that is not a concern for you it should be fine. I cannot answer the branding question for sure but I believe i have seen roots out there for both sprint and boost phones. Good luck

Wow. That's not a bad price at all for a Marquee even if it has been refurbished.

Just curious. How much is your monthly plan with Ting and what does it include? Thanks.

I'm watching ting for their byod status. If they get that worked out soon, I'll consider jumping. But as time goes by, I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with cdma in general. 4G/LTE looks like it's carrier specific and breaks things even further. A nexus 4 with a tmo sim is looking really attractive right now...

As of right now I have not gotten through a whole month with ting. But it seems really cool so far. There are no activation fees. You pay $6 a month per device with unlimited devices allowed on your plan. Each "item" is a bucket so you pick your price point for each item, text, data, and voice. https://ting.com/plans. Check out the link. But the neat part is that you can set these all to $0 and when you use something like texts it bumps you into the next bucket, then if you hit the next limit you go to the next bucket and so on. Then at the beginning of the next billing cycle you drop back to your $0 plan. The part that most people can't get over is that you buy your device out right instead of subsidized. But if Ting completes the BYO(sprint)D that would be awesome because you could essentially get a sprint phone from ebay or your old stash and bring it to Ting. If you guys are looking to try it out or move to Ting use my referral link:
https://za2ahjj411.ting.com/ it will get you $25 off your first device! Hope this helps. Thanks guys!

I am in no way affiliated with Ting!

Nice. I'm taking the plunge for the nexus 4 in the next couple of weeks. I like lg, and I'm happy that Google finally chose them to produce the new nexus. It is a beast and only cost $29 more than what I paid for this phone in February.

The Ting plans are incredibly inexpensive, and you only pay for what you use. I think this will be the perfect plan for a family of 5 (wife and 3 girls!). I just ordered a refurb Marquee for $90. I sure hope I can run CTMOD, but I can't pass up the savings over what Boost can even offer. I'll let you know how things go when I get the phone.

Just finished customizing a CTMod install on my mom's new LG Marquee (Boost Mobile exterior, Sprint software) on Ting. It took a bit to get the firmware downgraded/root applied, but beyond that things were smooth sailing.

CTMod is a night and day difference vs. the standard LG software...highly recommend it. Since it's based on the stock firmware (more or less), everything works...just quite a bit faster. Sure, it isn't ICS, but for around $95 including tax I can forgive the phone for not running the newer OS.

Would I give up my Galaxy SIII for the Marquee? In most circumstances, no. But for the three members of my immediate family who don't mind toting smartphones but also didn't mind using the LG Optimus V, this is a great replacement.

I finally got fed up with being unable to get 3g on my spectrum and sprints lousy speeds here anyway, and I asked Mrs Santa for a n4. So I'll be getting a tmo sim and pop it into the spectrum while patiently waiting... :)

I successfully have CTMod running, but Wifi drains my battery unbelievably fast. Is this a ROM issue or just a device issue?

I was doing a little Ting research and ran across one of their blogs that listed this referral code for $50 of the purchase of your first phone.

https://vtimrr7.ting.com/

You can get a refurbished LG Marquee for $87 and with the referral code that would put it at $37! That's crazy cheap.

Here's ting's partner blog with the referral code in it. Everything Ting!: Bring Your Own Device to Ting

Hope this can help someone else save some money!

I cancelled my first order and used this link to get $50 off. Total after tax is $42.22. Can't wait to try out their service! Another added benefit is since they use Sprint service the coverage is significantly better than Boost (yes I know Boost also uses Sprint towers), but it appears that Ting will have the advantage of roaming onto other towers (Sprint partners) that Boost could not. I have checked both maps (Boost and Ting), and Ting clearly shows many areas of coverage that Boost does not. Looking forward to trying out the service.

Is this legit I'm really about to order 1

Yes, when I first signed up I used the $50 off that was on Facebook and it worked fine. I think said and done my marquee was the $42.22 like leroydroid said earlier. Ting seems to be great so far. Hope this helps.

Here is the Facebook $50 credit link too:

I only think these work if you are a new customer and buying your first device with Ting.

If I were you new guys with TING as a service provider, I would ask Android Forums to open your own section. That way all of your questions, discussions, and problems will be all in one place. It'll make it easier on all of us since this section is for Sprint/Boost.

I'm noticing that the TING phones are having their own set of issues that neither the Sprint or Boost phones have.

I have a feeling that there are going to be quite a few new members using TING and you guys deserve your own section. It'll make things much easier on you and the newcomers.

Would it make sense for this to be a sprint/boost/ting area since boost and ting are both mvno's? Seems like ting will run the same rom's as sprint without modification. If ting had their own forum we'd be getting our rom's over here anyway. Just thinking out loud.

From what I've read, Ting phones seem to be having issues that are specific to that carrier. It really doesn't matter to me where you guys are. I was just doing a little thinking ahead. Like I said above, I have a feeling that there are going to be quite a few Ting users in the coming months.

If you guys are happy here, fine with me. I already know where everything is and the extra post concerning a new carrier won't affect me at all. It would just make it easier on the newcomer who doesn't know where anything is. They could go directly to the Ting section and have everything they need without much searching. ;)

Good call guys. The phone I purchased from Ting was a "Boost Mobile" branded phone. And I know they are working on BYO(S)D = Bring your own (Sprint) Device. So my first guess would be a combined forum would work. But there always could be some differences from carrier to carrier....
I sent a message to the mods, hopefully they will check this out.

Thanks
Willis

Please feel free to chime in here where we're discussing if a new Ting specific All Things Root section is needed :)

If you guys are happy here, fine with me. ;)

I'm happy here...we just picked up a Marquee referb to go with ting. Also have two other marquees we use with our SERO plans.

Forgot to apply the $50 credit, sent Ting an email and had the credit applied in minutes - unreal! Love to company's attitude toward hacking, etc...

Went this route to use the Airave we already have, will root and apply the Sprint CTmod shortly thereafter...
