Root [TIP]Guaranteed drastic battery improvement

Do you stream that movie or do you watch it from your phonedrive?

Off the SD, I watch movies I preload, can't stream because of the lack of signal I get from my commute and daily tasks.

akikhia batt live prediction concerning streaming I think is very accurate. Streaming video will eat up some battery.

How does that turn off data when you are not using it? If it does do that, wouldn't that create a backlog of data syncing? Market, email, MMS, ect. What about tethering? Screen off and you scale back the cpu. That would effect a lot of background processes.

Especially if you use an app like Tasker. Which that combined with some tweaks like what are using could do alot to conserve batt life.

No offense, but did you not read the whole thing lol? Juice defender turns data off when the screen is off and back on when screen is on. My method is a combination of scaling down the CPU and turning data off when the phone isn't being used.

No it doesn't create a backlog of data syncing, juice defender periodically turns data back on even when the screen off, I believe every 15 minutes for 15 seconds (you can change these times in the settings), to allow email and other processes that require data to go through, then it turns back off.

I did read it, you didn't say anything about those settings in JD in the OP. In the OP it seems like data is only on when the screen is turned on. If I had it like that, I would have to wait a couple minutes every time it turned on to get all the emails I missed over the last hour and any other data running in the background.

Edit, also you didn't read my post either. Wouldn't work for me cause of tethering. Android system runs low enough for me in the background to worry about turning the device into a dead phone when it's screen is off. Thanks for the tips, but not for me.

My tips don't take tethering into account, it would only take a little common sense to realize you would have to disable jd for tethering purposes. (No data = no tethering, I didn't think I would have to spell that out for anyone), no offense, I'm merely responding as to why I didn't mentioned it.

I didn't mention the settings because I didn't need to mention them. By default, juice defender does these things. You don't HAVE to change these settings, but you can if you want to change how frequently JD turns data on to check for email, etc. By default it does so anyway.

Sorry it doesn't work for you.

And I think you would be quite surprised at how low the android system does not run in the background, unless tweaked. Otherwise so many people wouldn't be having battery issues.

I don't know if this is supposed to happen, i just thought i would mention it if it is happening to others.

For me, when i restart my phone, the profiles do not pick up. It will go still to 1.5 after restart, even after the Post_boot file was deleted. If the profiles didn't take after a restart, just go into RomToolBox uncheck use profiles, then recheck it and everything should be back to normal.

Again, I don't know if what i just said is supposed to happen or is just happening to my phone. Anyhoo thats how I deal with it.

Hmm, no that's actually not supposed to happen anymore.. its not happening to me at all.

It could be just happening to my phone. But If i restart, its goes to 1.512 MHz The profiles don't kick in until I go and do what I said.
Noticed it when I was on the train listening to music when it got a bit hotter than normal. I restarted my phone prior to listening to music when I was checking out themes in RomToolBox. I also noticed it didn't say Romtoolbox was given permission when unlocking my phone to have the screen on. When I went to CPU control it read 1.512, not what I had for the ON profile.
No idea whatsoever as to why that would happen, I didn't mess with anything other than my profiles. Maybe just redo the phone?

I like how you keep saying no offense after a smartass comment. I know what all the apps do. They work like crap. That's why I posted tasker. Learn about the phone and you'll learn why the batt life is horrendous. Low quality screen with a really huge brightness factor. Turn auto brightness off and do it manually. Stops that sensor from running all the time and wasting batt on powering the ultra bright screen.

Tweak with the proximity sensor in the kernel to adjust that bad boy from going crazy. I'm still working on that one. Turn off 4G when you don't need fast data. Stops that radio from working.

There are lots more.

Look man, I was simply trying to get you to explain your OP a lil better. There are many many better ways to save batt life than essentially turning your smartphone into a dumb feature phone when you turn the screen off. Why get a smartphone? I use mine. Just get a pantech or kyocera and buy a kindle for the android experience. Hell, android runs great on my WinMo Touch Pro. You can pick those up on ebay for $30. I just don't think turning the radios off on your phone is the best choice, unless it's 4G when you don't need the boost.

Weird, I checked my wife's phone and hers is doing this also. Not sure what to do, would redoing the phone make the profiles stick when restarting the phone? Should I make a video showing what this is doing?
Maybe I should just leave it be, unless I restart the phone, i have no issues.

^^LMAO Doesn't that look like i am talking to myself. haha

Just wanted to see if anyone had an issue with Juice Defender screwing up wifi/data service. I tried this suggestion and, at least for me, I've seen significant battery performance. The only thing that I started noticing was that my data would shutoff and not come back on. Checked phone status and saw mobile data as disconnected. I uninstalled JD and the problem's been resolved (although I froze Metro easy wifi and I've been having issues with locking into my wifi at home). Not sure if anyone else has experienced this or I didn't do something right with JD beta. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Yep, I've had the same issue with jd. My 4G will shut off and not come back until I reboot my phone.

Oh where to begin.. I don't think ill invest too much of my time to this response. My posts are inherently smartass, its my personality, nothing personal. Love it or hate.

Learn about the phone? Learn to know me before you attempt to judge my knowledge base not just on the phone but android period. Assumptions without facts is ignorance.

Bad battery life is an android issue, especially lte devices, inherited by this phone, not simply exclusive to it. How are the apps crap exactly, they seem to be working for many others, you are a small dividend of the feedback that is negative.

You say to turn off 4g when not needed, but that's what JD does, only it automates the process, and still allows data to flow when needed.

As for turning the phone into a 'dumbphone' while the screen is off.. lol what? Okay, the clock speed gets slowed down, but you aren't using the phone or power intensive apps, so why not? Power comes back when you need it. JD turns data off when not needed (screen off), unless you are tethering who cares? It still let's data through, the difference between that and turning 4g off on your own is what? Where is your logic?

Geez, I've invested way too much fingerage into this post already ..

Last thing.. a more detailed OP is unnecessary, its simply a method of saving battery that is working for people and does not interfere with their enjoyment of their phone WHEN THEY ACTUALLY WANT TO ENJOY IT (such as when they aren't sleeping?).

Not sure what your issue is here but I think your argument has been successfully shot down.

Ill admit you make good points about the other tweaks, but your argument against this method is without merit. But you won't give up right? ;)

Yep, I've had the same issue with jd. My 4G will shut off and not come back until I reboot my phone.

I've not seen this issue myself yet, but another brought this to my attention too. Not sure what's conflicting just yet.

The difference between turning data off and the 4G radio off is you still get EVDO speed for email and MMS and other syncing happening in the background while your screen is off. If you want to surf the net, stream media, you can turn the 4G radio on to boost your speed.

When all data is turned off, then turned on, you get a backlog of Gmail, G+, other email accounts, facebook, appaware, and any MMS that could have come with the EVDO radio on.

On my nook running GB I get that when I haven't turned wifi on in a while. Everything wants to sync up at the same time. Bogs system down. That's all I'm saying.

And in my first post in this thread, I did say thanks for the tip. And then explained some other things you can do. I wasn't trying to start something out of this. But that's why I don't post on this forum. Tend to stay on xda and rootzwiki.

I understand what you are saying, but its not a factor here. While yes JD does turn data off, it still turns it on to periodically check for email and what not, so its not actually a drawback, there won't be a data backlog ;)

If JD turned data off, and kept it off, and didn't periodically check for email, mms and what not then I would agree with you 100%.

After reading through my last couple of responses, I realize how badly I have come off. My apologies.

This is a bit off subject as it has nothing to do with battery consumption and more to do with the app Rom Toolbox Pro...I am interested in some of the other features it includes. I would like to change my boot screen and the icons in the status bar but the program warns against issues because they havent tested the app on all phones. Has anyone else changed their boot screen or edited their status bar icons on the connect using Rom Toolbox Pro? This is the first time I have rooted a phone and I am not sure how I would fix things if something went awry...any info would be appreciated.

I have done both, it does work. The boot animation changes without a hitch. The icons do change, but there's something goofy going on with it, not bad goofy, just odd goofy lol. Such as, if you change the wifi icon, when you turn wifi on it shows the old wifi icon for about 1 second, then it changes to the new one.

Not a big deal, just kinda strange.

How about battery icon have you changed that before I'm thinking about doing it cause I'm on stock rom and would love to c percentage instead of the stock

Yes...there was a specific warning against changing the battery icon within Rom Toolbox Pro...has anyone tried changing the battery icon in particular?

I changed mine, it worked fine, there's a screenshot of my homescreen around here somewhere.

OK, first off, those of you that know me from other devices know I don't give advice or fixes unless I know for sure they work. That being said, this will be a fairly long post, as I like to validate my claims with real world facts.

Tons of people have been having terrible battery performance on this phone, myself included. This morning at work, my phone dropped to 56% in a little over 3 hours. I've figured out a way to maximize battery life without sacrificing performance. This will not only improve battery life, but may very well make you shout HOLY SHIT!

First off ill say this. Ditch no-frills CPU. It doesn't allow you to create profiles so its useless here. I use rom toolbox. It is hands down the best app for rooted phones, it performs the functions of many apps in one including setting CPU speeds, ad blocking, root explorer, font changer, kernel tweaks, boot animation change and much more. No I don't work for jrummy lol.

So here's the easy steps I took. It will take you 5 min or less. First off, use juice defender. I know a lot of you are already, and its necessary for this to work but its not enough on its own. First step -juice defender set to balanced. Next in rom toolbox set up 2 profiles under CPU control. Profile 1 - Max and min set to 384 MHz/ governor of choice /SCREEN OFF in the stop down box. Profile 2 - max: whatever speed you want your device to run @ while in use(I use max 1.5ghz and min 384mhz)/ gov of choice/ SCREEN ON.

That's it. What this combo does is turn off data when you aren't using it (while the phone is sleeping) and scales down the CPU to 384mhz also when you aren't using it(while the phone is sleeping) you don't need your phone running @ 1.8ghz when its not in use. When you wake the phone up the CPU instantly scales back up, and 4g returns. You WILL NOT suffer any drawbacks/downtime/waiting for the phone to speed back up. Its instant, and the battery savings is huge. (After 5 hours I'm @ 71% with browser/video/texting/tapatalk use/20 minutes of talk time).

Many are naysayers and won't even try this, some are just lazy or don't even wanna spend the time to try it, but its their loss. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It works, with zero side effects and easy to implement. So ill enjoy getting 15+hours on my stock battery and sleek phone while others use a bulky extended or stay tethered to a charger.

And before anyone says it, no, your device isn't going to be running at 384 MHz lol. Its only going to run at that lower speed while your phone sleeps. Upon waking up the CPU speed will be automagically set to the higher profile 2 setting while you are using your phone, and back to the lower profile 1 settings when you put it back to sleep.

Try it, you have nothing to lose. As always, hit the thanks button when you try this and it works. :D
What are the gov set to?
And what percent priority do you have them set to?
Just wondering. :p

What are the gov set to?
And what percent priority do you have them set to?
Just wondering. :p

My daily driver settings are :

Screen off
Priority - 70
Gov - powersave
Min - 384 MHz
Max - 384 MHz

Screen on
Priority - 60
Gov - smartassv2
Min - 384 MHz
Max - 1296 MHz

YMMV depending on your own usage patterns, you might prefer to mess with it a bit until you find your sweet spot. This works for me, it saves an assload of battery, yet gives me enough power to run resource hungry apps and games, like final fantasy 3 and gta 3.

I have the same issue with mine, I added the fix and it still runs up to the 1.5ghz no matter my CPU settings after reboot and after I try to reset back to my settings it goes right back to 1.5. So I just went with deleting the whole boot.sh file and no more problems for me. And I thank u chiwen for the tip it has helped me tremendously in saving batt. life I appreciate it bro

Watch a 30 minute video on 4G and watch your battery disintegrate.

Why would you stream a 30 minute video anyway unless it's a live event? Any movie or show or music clip, would play much smoother if downloaded first. Then you could watch it on the train or wherever without the buffering.

I just downloaded 3 full length motion pictures (600 mb) in less than 15 minutes.
