Help Tips for road trips?

Besides the traffic layer in Maps, any other suggestions that might help on a long road trip?

I figure I'll just manually check the weather in cities ahead each day (important to prepare for potential snow storms this time of year). There might be some simple, common features of Android that I'm unaware of, so I thought I'd post for suggestions.

Traffic layer was great on my last road trip. GPS locked easily. I can't think of anything you've forgotten... a weather layer will be indispensable if and when Google develops it :)

Google doesn't have to, there's already a ton of other apps that overlay.

Weatherbug, accuweather, etc... Enjoy!

Maybe a logging program of your trip route... might make for fun conversation, etc.

No, not in nav, just download one of the programs like weatherbug and they use Google Maps API for their overlay.

Agreed, that would be cool in nav, but nav usually gives you a short distance view, so not sure if that would be helpful.
 
Yeah, but that little traffic indicator dot in the bottom left corner of Nav is great for understanding traffic patterns ahead, whether open, congested or stopped. A similar weather indicator would work wonders for us.

Google, can you hear me now? ;)

you could post this on google projects(code.google.com/android)as a potential enhancement.
 
I would suggest foursquare or yelp if you need to find food or stores or whatever. TripIt is awesome for coordinating any type of travel that involves reservations or tickets.

Pandora is an essential for long road trips where you may go long stretches without radio signal. Would only use if your data plan is unlimited, though
 
I was jokin about the car charger (sorry)......but do not forget about a good way to securely mount the phone (especially if you are driving) where you can see the screen and reach it.....so it doesn't distract you, for safety reasons. I picked up a cheap clamp style one from Amazon that suction cups to the window and actually works well.....I also have one that hooks onto an air conditioning vent that is surprisingly secure.


Is there an app for audio books?
