Here are my own tips:

1. set the brightness level to either minimum or to Auto.

2. stop all apps that require an internet or wi-fi connection (like Weatherbug, Google Maps/Latitude, Facebook, Twitter et al) whenever you are at work or have a weak signal area.

3. Turn off GPS.

4. Avoid those Live wallpapers as much as possible. just the plain wallaper would do unless you wanna show-off your phone to your pals.

5. Set the Screen Off to 15 seconds. the longer it turns off the more it uses battery.

6. install a task killer to stop all apps running in the background (or otherwise) thus saving battery life.

7. if you are on a weak signal area turn on your wi-fi.

any more please...?
 
on your #4, using a fixed wallpaper heavy with black saves even more

here's on i borrowed from someone on the MT3G forum a long time ago

plus for my 61 yr old eyes, the widgets are a lot easier to see

1. Switch ON Airplane Mode during night sleep. My GS uses only 1-2% of juice in 8 hours.
I use Tasker to automate the action. You can use the same app to create optional sms/call/data filters if needed.

2. Use SwitchPro to create 2G/3G, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth widgets for one click ON/OFF.
From my experience 2G ONLY mode does extend battery life.

3. Do standard full cycle charge/discharge from time to time as recommended for all Li-ion batteries.

Just replied to one like this. We could do with this being a sticky and adding to it.. I wonder does anyone know if we could underclock the CPU (unless it does already) when not being used? and other thing.. Is it possible to dim the brightness below the minimum setting using some kind of app?

Can someone explain to me the advantage of switching to Airplane mode rather than just switching off the phone.

I thought that Airplane mode was just to allow you to play games and music, without having any phone signals on.

I can only list my personal reasons why Airplane Mode not Power Off.

1. Alarm Clock. Gradual Ambient Alarm on SGS is perfect for early mornings :p

2. Routines Automation. Tasker will execute profiles like Airplane Mode ON/OFF, download new feeds and podcasts in the morning etc. (limited by your fantasy)

3. Power Off/On takes time and probably uses as much juice as Airplane Mode ON in 8 hours overnight (1-2% in my case)

When powered off the phone is a break. With Airplane Mode ON you have a sleeping beast ready to wake up and act.

If you use the SGS alarm to wake up, the phone must be switched on. Therefore, during the night, airplane mode is the best way to save battery as the radio part is turned off.
If you do not use the alarm, or do not need to have any kind of reminders, turning the phone off is of course the best battery saver.

Do you mean a manual way to do it?

Just place a widget/toggle on your [home] screen. You can use SwitchPro or other app from the market.

As I only turn Airplane Mode at set times I have automated the process with Tasker. Tasker can be used to create a manual switch too.
 
Has no-one gone into settings, Accounts and sync and turned off Background data? It's made a big difference to me.

You can still use all the features of the phone (although you have to enable it to use Android market), the phone still accepts/makes phone calls and it's given me a few more hours in battery life.
 
Don't use task killer!!!!
This is not Windows Vista and Older.
Apps are not "running" in the back ground, they are simply sleeping not taking up any ressource but just a place holder for faster launch next time, if more memory is needed unused app will be unloaded from the memory is replaced with the new one. All this is done by Android Operating System.
Using Task Killer will interfere with the system and actually end up using more battery and closing crucial apps.

I have Advanced Task Killer and it can be set up to only kill apps I have downloaded and ignore the crucual system ones.

Before I was using task killer my phone would slow down horribly and looking at the memory at one point it was saying I had 15MB left for running services.

Since installing task killer there is no slow down and memory is closer to 70MB.

It has not crashed once or done anything odd whatsoever.

The available memory means literally nothing. It's wasted memory. When you see an app taking up memory it is just a "placeholder" for faster launch. This works very similar to caching.

If all the apps in the memory are actually running in the background, the system will crash. Also, closing all the apps with the killer is the most ******ed way to deal with it. The operating system does this for you. Only time you would have a problem is when you have a rogue app that does not go into sleep properly when not being used.
DO NOT USE the Advanced TASK KIller

This! You have on of the best Phones on the market with the fastest processor, Task Managers do more harm than good to this phone!
 
i found out that installing task killers slows down significantly the Galaxy S for some reason. has anyone experienced this?

Yes it does, task killers do more harm than good in most cases and especially if you dont understand how the andriod system works.
