Root Titanium Backup 101

All I restore is apps + data. It's a good idea to make a recovery backup (nandroid) BEFORE restoring system data. I've hosed a new install by restoring accounts with a new rom, trying to prevent having to enter 4 email accounts. So if in doubt, just live without it.

Don't forget, many apps have their own backup (or export), like Launcher Pro, QuickClock, and Folder Organizer)

Has anyone tried the Update.zip creator in Titanium Backup? What are the implications of the update.zip file being "unsigned" if any? Also, what about System versus user installation?

Sorry for intruding here, from ZTE Blade forum, but I think there is an answer for the Update.zip you create, in order to have a copy of TB after re-flash, etc.

But, you need a signed version, which can be created by ZipSigner 2.

You can then use Recovery to install TB after Re-Flash, new ROM, etc.

See also here for discussion on TB use before and after complete wipe.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the link. Good stuff except,

There's that "restore missing apps + system data" again. :D

A lot of people install custom roms and system data will cause problems, esp when going to a different rom type (Froyo, GB, HC). I wouldn't recommend restoring system unless it's the same rom/kernel version. BUT, if you're doing a wipe and reinstalling the same rom version, it must be for a stability reason, in which case you probably wouldn't want system.

Real life example: When going from HC to Froyo, you must wipe data b/c it's incompatible. Restoring "system" (HC to Froyo) in this case is asking for trouble.

Other than the "system data" part, it's an interesting read. :D

Hi colchiro...

thanks for that.

I could not agree with you more.

I did ask about the very point you are emphasizing, and which I agree with!! but not sure I put it correctly, or was understood.

I advocated the Restore missing apps with data option, especially when going to a newer, or older, version....perhaps just different version ;)

I also take on board your point regarding stability issues, when restoring same ROM version, has to be, otherwise, why?? do it....

So, steer clear of system stuff?? especially when changing ROM version!!!

What do you think of the update.zip point, regarding needing a signed version of the TB app, and using ZipSigner 2 for this??

The option is there, see screenshot....but is greyed out??? coz it is for ZipSigner original, which was problematical

Guess I've managed just fine without a signed version. I just install it from Market and then install missing apps and data from TIBU.

After installing new Rom I am restoring apps + data but it is asking me to install each app individually, where before it automatically installed all apps checked. Is this a setting I need to change.

You need to install the free version from Market, then install the paid TIBU key, o/w you'll end with TIBU thinking just the free version is installed and you'll get 2 or 3 prompts for every app. If you don't run TIBU before installing the paid key, you should be good. If in doubt, reboot before restoring apps. :D

Known issue with MIUI when root was enabled AFTER TIBU was started. Maybe same with other 2ndInit apps.

Did you try stopping TIBU or rebooting?
